Irish Food Products Recalled Over Safety Fears

Two food products have been recalled by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

Goatsbridge Trout Pâté – Recalled December 5th.
A batch of Goatsbridge Trout Pâté, (country of origin Ireland) is being recalled due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes has been implicated, within the past decade, as the causative organism in several serious outbreaks of food-borne disease.

Point-of-sale recall notices in the case of this product should be displayed in all retail outlets, which sold the implicated batch of pâté.

Big Al’s Chicken Chunks, Chicken Dippers & Chicken Goujons – Recalled December 6th.
A number of Big Al’s chicken products may be dangerous to people with certain allergies, according to the FSAI. The products include some batches of Big Al’s chicken chunks, chicken dippers and chicken goujons on sale without a full list of ingredients published on its packaging.

Big Al’s Chicken Goujons (400g packs), with a price mark of €3.95 and best before date of December 2018, were found to have undeclared milk and mustard constituents, thus making the batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of mustard or milk.

Big Al’s Chicken Chunks (377g packs), and Chicken Dippers (378g packs), were also found to have undeclared mustard constituents.

Tractor Girls Calendar 2018 On Sale Now

These 12 female Tipperary beauties have decided to pose nude for the ‘Tractor Girls Calendar 2018’ in support of Billy Goulding.  Photo: Tom Doherty.

Twelve lovely Tipperary ladies have braved the Irish weather to pose naked beside a tractor; their motivation, to raise funds for a five-year-old, latter who is presently paralysed from the neck down.

When just two and a half years old; Master Billy Goulding was playing with his sister outside in his garden when he took a fall and found himself unable to get back on to his feet.

Rushed to Limerick hospital before being transferred to Temple Street Hospital; his parents would later learn the disappointing news that their son had Transverse Myelitis, latter a neurological condition in which the spinal cord becomes inflamed. This inflammation damages nerve fibres, thus causing them to lose their myelin coating, leading to decreased electrical conductivity in the central nervous system.

Billy, who now is required to travels twice a year to the Stoke Mandeville Hospital, London for intensive physiotherapy, requires 24-hour care.

As with everything; over the years the cost of caring for Billy has greatly amplified, so the local female community have taken the similar route as that taken by the Knapely branch of the Women’s Institute (1999) in Yorkshire, England, to discreetly pose nude. (Remember the 2003 comedy film ‘Calendar Girls’, starring the gorgeous Helen Mirren).

The Tractor Girls Calendar 2018 is now available for sale and if you would like to help Billy on his road to recovery, you can also donate HERE on the Facebook page ‘Billy’s Recovery’, with calendars costing €15 each.  Share and support.

Well done girls, you prove, in the equality stakes, that once again females are far superior to males.

Half Of Septic Tanks Failed Local Authority Inspection

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), home owners need to take action to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours from risks posed by septic tanks.

  • Half of all septic tanks, failed local authority inspections in 2016, posing a potential health risk to home owners and their neighbours
  • Half of sites with a septic tank and a private drinking water well on site, also failed inspection.
  • Quarter (25%) of septic tanks failed due to owners not removing sludge build-up from their tanks, an issue that can be easily rectified by home owners.

The Environmental Protection Agency today released a review of the implementation of the National Inspection Plan for Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems for the period 1st January to 31st December 2016. The National Inspection Plan is being implemented by local authorities under the supervision of the EPA.

The review shows that 49 per cent of septic tanks failed inspection in 2016, up from 45 per cent in 2015. Septic tank failures were mainly due to a lack of proper operation and maintenance. The failure by home owners to maintain and operate a septic tank system adequately can pose a health and environmental risk through the pollution of private drinking water wells or water courses. Many septic tank owners source their water from their own private well.

Commenting on the results Mr. Darragh Page, Programme Manager of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Enforcement said, “Home owners may be putting themselves, their families and their neighbours at risk of ill health if they do not maintain their septic tank system adequately. There are simple steps that home owners can take to ensure their system is managed properly and will pass an inspection. These include: having the sludge emptied from the tank on a regular basis, using a permitted contractor and retaining the receipt and, if the home owner has a package treatment system, having it regularly serviced and keeping a record of servicing.”

By taking these simple steps home owners can protect themselves and their environment from contamination.
The results of the review of the 2016 inspection plan are available on the EPA’s website.

Order of Malta Thurles – Adam’s Gift CPR Awareness Week

Thurles Order of Malta Ambulance CorpsMr Gerard Fogarty, Unit Deputy Officer In Charge, Parnell Street, Thurles reports:-

Order of Malta Ambulance Corps Cadets Thurles will be holding CPR demonstrations and training for members of the public (latter training for all age groups), at their premises in Boheravoroon, Thurles, on Saturday 11th November next, from 10.00am to 1.00pm, to mark their Annual Adam’s Gift CPR Awareness Week.

Some 3,500 cardiac arrests occurred in 2016 – Just over 50% had CPR attempted – Education is key to ensuring increased survival rates.

CPR training helps an individual to recognise and manage cardiac arrest, and potentially save a life. Last year more than 2,800 people received free CPR training during the week. CPR saves lives and we have had feedback of a number of potential fatalities that were prevented as a result of individuals receiving training over the few short years of the project.

I would like to commend our volunteers who provided 870 hours of training just last year. We expect that this year will be even more enhanced.

Adam’s Gift CPR Awareness:

Adam McAndrew, a 13-year old and the son of Order of Malta unit member Kerry, died two years ago from sudden cardiac death. Despite her grief and heartbreak, Kerry began an initiative to make Adam’s classmates aware of CPR and the importance of early access to Auto External Defibrillator (AED) emergency services and good quality CPR. Levels of CPR awareness are comparatively low in this country so Order of Malta Ireland is working with Kerry to amplify the message, encourage more people to learn the skill, and potentially save lives.

The Unit’s Annual Mass for Deceased Member’s will take place on Friday next the 10th November at 7.00pm, at Boheravoroon, (Borroway), Thurles, with the blessing of the Unit’s newest ambulance also taking place. All members, their friends and family are most welcome to attend.
