To promote this awareness and information campaign, we will hold a Coffee Morning in Bookworm, Liberty Square, Thurles, on the 1st Wednesday of each month from 11.00am12.30pm.

Please Note: The first of such coffee mornings will begin on December 5th next 2018.

This first event will be attended by guests; Ms Kathy Ryan (Cashel), latter a member of the Irish Dementia Working Group, while Nurse Adviser Ms Amy Murphy of the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland will also be in attendance.

This Coffee Morning will begin with a discussion, followed by a relaxed conversation, where those attending can share their experiences, thoughts and ideas with others, or they can just sit and listen.

The leaders for this new Café experience [Ms Margaret Pollard, Ms Jennifer Manning and Ms Ursula Paine] come from a background in supporting care. They have an intimate knowledge of dementia and a real experience of talking to ‘Carers’ and people suffering from dementia.

When possible, each month, ‘Guest speakers’, will also be in attendance at these events.

While no membership fee is required, refreshments are purchased by those in attendance and ‘Carers’ are encouraged to stay and fully participate in any or all discussion.

“Dementia Champions, are passionate about those suffering from dementia and want to see our Tipperary community become fully dementia inclusive.  We will share our knowledge and drive required change through local community and business groups. We will link with other Dementia Champions to increase our network and support one another”, concluded Nurse Paine.

So, do remember the date, December 5th, 2018 next – Sure there’s nothing like a good chat!

Drug Respreeza – “Duty Of Finance Won Over Duty Of Care”

The drug ‘Respreeza’ used to treat Alpha 1 antitripsan deficiency; in those who have developed emphysema; according to the HSE and CSL Behring, is to be made available once again and will be guaranteed indefinitely to the 19 Irish people, latter currently battling with this rare disorder.

For almost three years patients have had to live with uncertainty with regard to the supply of Respreeza, latter which had given them a much improved quality of life for the previous 11 years.

Alas, the reintroduction of this drug by the HSE comes to late for Nenagh, Co Tipperary native Marion Kelly, one of two people who passed away on December 1st last year; shortly after the trial of this potentially life-saving medication was withdrawn.

Marion, aged just 53 year, a mother and grandmother, was one of 21 patients countrywide who had taken part in the Respreeza trial for this rare lung and liver disorder.

The death of Marion, came just a fortnight after she had made a desperate plea for help on social media, telling of her fears for her future existence after the government and the HSE had decided to remove the Respreeza drug from dependant patients.

There still remains a massive question mark over why six months free supply of the drug was kept in storage in Dublin, with the HSE refusing to administer it at a cost of €6,000.

The drug is understood to have been withdrawn by the HSE, following advice from the National Centre of Pharmacoeconomics, latter who decided it did not “represent value for money”, thus refusing to reimburse the drug company’s annual €80,000 invoice.

To put this drug withdrawal exercise into full context; the Government spent over €505,911 travelling to the recent Offaly Ploughing Championships;  transporting nine ministers, 50 agencies, one Taoiseach and some 370 civil servants, over a four day period; each to pay token homage to a forgotten rural Ireland.

European Union May End Daylight Saving Time

On Sunday, 28 October 2018 last, at 2.00am, clocks were turned backward 1 hour, (called Fall Back or Winter Time) to ensure more light was enjoyed during these otherwise dark winter mornings.

A survey and an online consultation on Seasonal Clock Changes is now being currently undertaken, as shortly the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union (EU), may decide to end Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanently, resulting in next year, (2019), possibly being the last time that Europeans will be asked to set their clocks forward 1 hour, come Sunday, March 31st, 2019.

European Member States now have the chance to decide if they wish to stay on “Summer Time” (DST) year-round or to change their clocks once more on Sunday, October 27th, 2019, and for subsequent years.

Individuals here in Ireland are now being asked through this survey/online consultation to vote on such seasonal clock changes. See survey being currently undertaken HERE.

A majority 84% of people across Europe want the turning back of the clocks scrapped; that’s according to results of a EU Commission’s public consultation. This review, which is backed by a group of MEPs, will claim that daylight savings has a detrimental effect on people’s mental health, not to mention Europe’s energy use. While here in Ireland we see that extra 1 hour of daylight as a health and safety measure, aiding our motorised workforce and our young children who attend our centres of education.

The campaign in Britain, which initially led to the creation of Daylight Savings Time, was begun by William Willett in 1907 in a bid to stop people wasting valuable hours of light in the summer months.

Acumens Amassed May Pave Way For Cancer Cure.

A scientist, Mr Shane Cronin, himself  a native of Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan, may has come up with a new way to assist in the tackling of cancer.

Research undertaken by Mr Cronin and others who works at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the latter one of the leading biomedical research institutes in Europe; indicates that by activating the immune system with the hormone Serotonin, (which sends signals between nerve cells), the human body can fight disease much more effectively.

Scientists at IMBA together with the Boston Children’s Hospital at Harvard, now suggest a completely new way of combating autoimmune diseases and cancer. Mr Cronin, PostDoc at IMBA and first author of the study, explains that activating the immune system means the body can defend itself against cancer cells and invading pathogens.

He states: “What we actually showed in the paper is that by increasing and turning up the amount of BH4, the t-cells were more aggressive and able to fight cancer much more aggressively”.

He continues, “So this has very important clinical implications because the way we can turn BH4 down, we actually developed a brand new novel drug to do this, and also by turning it up, there’s a drug already out there being used for completely different purposes.”
