Author George Mordaunt will speak on Family Business, Recession & Recovery, at the Horse & Jockey Hotel on Tuesday next, the 8th November
at 6.30pm.
George Mordaunt’s family car business in Clonmel was one of the huge success stories during the boom years, but alas came crashing down in spectacular fashion, when this current recession hit.
George has now put his story in print, in a remarkable book called “Shepherd’s Pie: Family Business, Recession & Recovery – The Real Story”
This book is a brutally honest and brave account of what happened and of how he has managed to survive and start all over again. Ireland is insolvent because of mismanagement, corruption and greed. We have been bombarded with and infuriated by reports of self-serving bankers, developers and government ministers.
To date, the general public has not had an account of the devastating effect of this crisis on Irish-owned business, as it tries to pick up the pieces. Irish businesses are trying to cope with insolvency, arrears, liquidation – the rate of suicide among the self-employed in Ireland has trebled in the last 3 years. George Mordaunt believes that many Irish businesses are now dysfunctional, not because of the recession, but because of the reaction of business owners to this recession – and specifically their reaction to their banks.
With raw honesty he outlines the effect this reaction has had on himself, his young family, his marriage and his business. He shares his most private moments of despair and fear, while demonstrating how business owners can salvage their businesses and that we now have a core responsibility to get back to basics in all levels of Irish life.
His talk will be of interest to many struggling to survive in business today and this talk therefore is an event not to be missed on Tuesday next.
The talk is presented by Network North Tipperary and anyone interested in attending can email president@networknorthtipp.ie for further details.
George Mordaunt’s book “Shepherd’s Pie: Family Business, Recession & Recovery – The Real Story” is a ‘Must Read.’
On Wednesday 19th October last, over thirty retailers from the high streets of Thurles attended a meeting in Hayes Hotel Liberty Square, Thurles, to form a Traders Unite Association. This association is inclusive of all traders in Liberty Square, Friar Street, West Gate, Croke Street, Baker Street, Parnell Street, The Mall, Kickham Street and Mitchell Street. The meeting was very positive and participation from traders was informative and uplifting, with brilliant ideas put forward for consideration.
The agenda and aspirations addressed at this Association meeting, chaired by Joan Pollard Carew, (Michael’s Jewellers) came under the following headings:-
(1)Parking issues; (2) Traffic management; (3) Promoting individuality of shopping experience on our high streets; (4) Group advertising campaign, and (5) Music on our streets for Christmas 2011.
 Thurles Traders Unite Association Meeting
Endeavouring to address parking issues for Thurles customers, a decision was made to offer free parking to all customers. Indeed at the time of going to press tonight, notices are being designed for shop windows and are expected to be be displayed in participating stores within the next seven days.
All customer who spend a minimum of €10 in Thurles shops, bearing this notice, will be refunded 30 minutes of their parking charges. Smart shoppers will be aware that they can actually, by visiting 4 shops, receive a €2 refund, despite having only paid €1.20 for parking.
It was also mooted that if the Town Council and traders could carve out a deal, where the old style parking discs could be made available, then traders could actually give a disc to their customers and everyone would gain considerably. To this end it was agreed that a delegation from this new Association would meet with the Councillors and Executives of the Town Council and these ideas would be amongst other issues for future discussion.
On Thurles traffic management the mood of the meeting confirmed that the present pedestrian lights system was causing unnecessary traffic jams and numerous safety issues were raised. Again these will be debated when the Association meets with Town Council officials.
To further promote high street shopping in Thurles the Traders Unite Association are considering numerous advertising packages, involving local and national media, in an effort to sustain present levels of employment and information for customers.
Thurles high streets have numerous outlets, selling a diverse range of goods and offering services, thus offering consumers a much better choice. As most shops are family owned and run these businesses can also offer a much more personal service.
The meeting was informed of a Christmas Market to take place in Liberty Square on 11th December. Stall holders will be decked out in period costumes with a proposed Faction Fight , together with Christmas music in the background, under the usual wonderful display of Christmas lighting. This event promises to be an exciting day for all the family. It will also showcase Thurles town centre, and children please note, Santa Claus has accepted an invitation to be present at this event. (More about this Christmas Market and it’s organisers in the coming days, so do stay tuned.)
Greater use of our towns successful Thurles.Info website was also encouraged, this service is free and should now be utilised by local traders for promotions and offers in their stores. The new Hidden Tipperary website is also a wonderful medium of both information and education for the county. Tourism or at least the lack of same was another issue raised, as this industry is not tapped into, in Thurles. Industry means business and as a group this association intends to now promote our town as a real tourist destination.
It was decided, by this meeting, not to form a traditional committee, rather it was felt that hierarchy was of no advantage and would be actually more of a hindrance to the future success of this new Association. The decision then to form a task force of ten traders to handle the day to day running of the Association and thus form smaller groups, to focus on current issues relating to traders, was adopted.
This newly elected task force is a diverse group of traders from across the retail industry in Thurles and are named as follows:-
John Butler, Paul Scully, Gabriella McLoughney, Catriona Griffin, Frances Boyle, William Kinane, Diarmud Moran, Paul McEvitt, George Willoughby and Joan Pollard Carew.
The next meeting of the Association’s task force will be October 25th next at 8.00pm in Hayes Hotel and progress reports will issue on a regular basis.
Joan Pollard Carew, who chaired the meeting, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Association, to the Management of Hayes Hotel, who provided accommodation for this event, free of charge.

27th September, 2011.
Dear God,
I trust you and yours keep in good health. I did not intend to write to you until tomorrow, but every day living in this State, we appear to become more silent, corrupt and greedy.
Please understand, that I am aware that You and Your Guardian Angels are very busy at the moment, what with famine in the Horn of Africa, the state of the Euro and all the other chaos worldwide, caused mainly by individual political greed and the never ending lust for position and power.
Miss Teresa Treacy - A Lady With Real Backbone
I personally don’t ask You for much as you know, but presently, it’s gettin’ hard to tell what’s wrong from right.
On behalf of Your many confused, but faithful followers, I am hoping that, having read this letter, You might find the time to reply and perhaps offer me some wise council, since it is my belief that You haven’t been calling around this once Island of Saints and Scholars in the last number of years, due to Your heavy work commitments at more deserving locations.
Lord, allow me to explain my confusion.
A 65 year old woman, Miss Teresa Treacy, from Clonmore, Tullamore, Co Offaly, has been imprisoned in the Dochas, Women’s Prison at Mountjoy Jail, in Dublin, for the past 14 days. Her only “crime” has been to challenge ESB and Eirgrid, over the right for them to cut her security locks, trespass on her land, cut down 12,000 of her trees and build pylons on her property, without her consent.
Unlike drug dealers, rapists, thieves, murderers etc. this woman’s prison sentence will not be considered by the authorities, under their “Revolving Prison Door System,” of justice, which presently continues to operates in this country for other truly dangerous offenders.
You understand Lord that in 65 years, this woman’s only crime is that she displays, what our present political leadership lacks, namely, basic backbone, and unless she apologises to our Court system and purges her contempt, which she refuses to entertain, she must remain locked in prison with convicted murderers Catherine Neven and Linda Mulhall.
God, what confuses me is that this event is happening here in Ireland, at the same time as a Sinn Fein leader, who, through his past association with terrorism, without the support of our democratic system and who has wasted more of the Irish taxpayers money than both Fianna Fáil and our present greedy banking system put together, is being supported for the post of President Of Ireland.
Accompanying him in this race also, to get his undeserving hands on a salary worth almost €250.000 plus €317, 434 expenses, is a man who wrote letters, seeking clemency on behalf of a man charged with the statutory rape of a 15-year-old Palestinian boy in 1997. Note also Lord that this is happening in the same year that our government has suddenly realised that pedophilia is not acceptable in present society.
This is happening also in a time when those who have been allowed, by law, to willfully rape and pillage our fair land, still continue to party, using the proceeds from their looting and ill-gotten gain.
What should we be doing Lord, to correct this grave injustice in Irish society? I would appreciate your guidance in this time of silence.
Your faithful servant,
George Willoughby.
P.S. Lord, You do not appear to have an account with Facebook, but if others feel as I do, is it O.K. to send Miss Treacy a message of support by clicking here? We can deal with the “Presidential Hopefuls,” at the ballot box.
We all remember the unprecedented cold weather experienced last January. For many consumers the rising cost of fuel prices is a cause of grave concern, as we head into the coming winter months. Cheer up folks, because we have got news for you.
As and from Monday morning next at 9.00am and available only while stocks last, Centenary Co-Op here in Thurles have reduced the price of their premium grade Polish coal to just €14.95 per single 40kg bag.
Well actually I have just done the sums and it gets even cheaper if you are prepared to buy in bulk, e.g. One tonne of coal, which is equal to 25 x 1 bags, will go on sale for €330.00 which is equivalent to €13.20 per each 40kg bag. If on the other hand you purchase a pallet containing 40 x 1 bags of coal, the cost is less again, just €525.00 or approx €13.125 per each 40kg bag.
Many households could find themselves financially unable to fork out €525.00 all in one go, so here is the trick to take full advantage of this great offer. Get together with three neighbours and buy, as a small Co-Op of four people. You can do the sums yourself – €525.00 divided by 4 = €131.25 or ten bags of coal per household.
For those who use Briquettes in large quantities, there are huge savings here also, with bulk buying of 80 bales of Irish briquettes at €269.00 or €3.3625 per bail.
Note: All prices are cash collected and available only while stocks last, so take full advantage and save a considerable sum on your heating costs this winter. You can contact Centenary Thurles Co-Op, direct, during normal business hours, at Telephone:- 0504 21522.
