Food Safety Authority Issue Allergen Alert

fsaiIreland’s Food Safety Authority has issued an allergen warning regarding varieties of Slimfast Meal Bars which may have been packed labelled incorrectly and are now subject to a recall by Unilever.

Quality checks have revealed that some bars had been packed in incorrect boxes, thus the allergen information on the boxes, regarding ingredients such as peanuts – wheat – oats and gluten, may not match product description. This could be a health hazard for persons subject to food allergies or food intolerance.

Consumers and product retailers are advised to check the writing on the product wrapper which describes the product content to ensure that same matches the description on the outer carton.

In newspapers today Unilever have published a safety notice urging people who find any mismatch in product description to contact their care line on 1850 419172 and are warning consumers with an allergy to peanuts or gluten, to not eat the bars suspected.

The products named include: Slimfast 4 x Chocolate Crunch Flavour Meal Bar (240g); Slimfast 4 x Chocolate Peanut Flavour Meal Bar (224g); and Slimfast 4 x Summer Berry Flavour Meal Bar (240g).

As many as 4% of children and 8% of adults could have a food allergy.

HIQA Probe Tipperary Infant Death

DelahuntA Co. Tipperary couple and their unborn baby daughter have become the latest victims of further apparent malpractice at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise. Earlier this year an RTE Prime Time Documentary revealed that four babies had died either shortly before or just after being born at this same maternity unit.

Mr Oliver Kelly and wife Amy Delahunt, both residing in Borrisoleigh, Co Tipperary, claim that medical staff failed to recognise that their baby daughter was in foetal distress when she went to the Portlaoise maternity unit in May of last year.

The couple became aware that their baby daughter had stopped moving and went to the Midlands Regional Hospital where a Cardiotocograph  Machine (CTG) or  Electronic Fetal Monitor (EFM) was used to monitor the unborn child’s heartbeat. Following this Amy was subsequently discharged; however the next day, following a routine appointment to Limerick Hospital, they were informed that their baby daughter was dead. Mary-Kate was delivered to the couple on May 28th, and taken home for two days.

The couple only recently learned that their unborn baby was the fifth such baby to die after apparent failure of care at the Midlands Regional Hospital Unit. The couple are understood to have received information via a Freedom of Information request just three weeks ago, and were horrified to learn that the report identified a number of care management problems, including the inability to read CTG data correctly.

Last January, RTE revealed the tragic deaths of four other babies at the maternity unit and now this fifth couple have come forward with their story. The Chief Medical Officer published a damning report which found the maternity unit unsafe and a HIQA investigation is now under way at the hospital.

Thurles Councillor Speaks Out On Neknomination

fogartySave a life, don’t risk your own.

Tipperary Ógra Fianna Fáil are urging young people to save a life by donating a pint of blood, instead of risking their own safety by participating in the latest online craze known as ‘Neknomination.’

Chairman, Cllr. Gerard Fogarty, explained, “We are calling on young people to think twice before participating in this latest online craze and to donate a pint of blood instead of necking a pint of alcohol.

It has become clear that this game has spiralled out of control. More and more young people are risking their own safety to outdo each other with increasingly outrageous drinking scenarios. This game only serves to normalise binge drinking and reinforce the dangerous message that young people need to get drunk to enjoy themselves.
We are calling on people to drink responsibly and to consider spending the time donating a pint of blood to help save a life, rather than risk their own safety by downing a pint of alcohol simply to impress others. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service regularly call for more donations and visit Thurles and other sites across Tipperary every 3 months. It doesn’t take long, and can save someone’s life. This is an opportunity to turn something destructive into something more positive.”

If Facebook wants to turn this latest disaster into something more positive, it will work to spread the more positive message: “Don’t neck a pint, donate a pint,” concluded Thurles Town Cllr. Fogarty.
