Thurles.Info readers have been asking us the question, “Please state how an elderly person, not in a nursing home, should apply to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, when the same comes on stream to the general public.”
Unable to answer this incoming query, we contacted Mr Fran Thompson (Interim Chief Information Officer, HSE).
We thank Mr Thompson for his prompt reply, who stated: –
“Getting a COVID-19 vaccine should protect you from the serious complications of COVID-19. Our aim in offering the vaccine to the population is to protect people and reduce the illness and deaths caused by this virus.
The first groups to get the COVID-19 vaccine are:
(A) People aged 65 years and older who live in long-term care facilities, as they have a greater risk of serious illness if they get COVID-19. (B) Frontline healthcare workers, as they have a higher risk of being exposed to COVID-19 Note: If you live in a long-term care facility, you will be offered the vaccine there. If you are a healthcare worker, you will be offered the vaccine where you work or nearby.
The vaccine will be offered to more priority groups as soon as possible.
Note: You do not need to apply or register to get the vaccine. We will let you know when it’s your turn to get the COVID-19 vaccine, through advertising or an invitation.” – Signed Mr Fran Thompson (Interim Chief Information Officer, HSE.)

The Cabinet has agreed to close schools from next Monday, due to rising Covid-19 infections, but Leaving Cert students will be allowed to attend three days a week. For obvious reasons, this decision by government will be regarded as being totally out of touch with regard to activities involving social distancing by students over Xmas. It had been hoped that Leaving and Junior Cert examinations, could have had holidays shortened at Easter and Summer in order to allow for social distancing until the end of January, keeping in mind that Ireland has exceeded the peak level of the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, with 921 people now in hospital. [Last record of 881 hospitalisations occurred on April 15th 2020.]
The Cabinet has also decided that non-essential construction will stop at 6:00pm on Friday next. However, essential construction projects exempt will include health projects specific to Covid-19; housing adaptation grants; repairs critical to the maintenance of rail and roads.
Passengers arriving from Britain and South Africa will now need to have a negative PCR test for Covid-19.
