The Department of Health have confirmed this evening that there have sadly been 17 further deaths caused by the Covid-19 pandemic; leaving the overall death toll, here in the Republic of Ireland, remaining at 2,282.
There are 5,325 new additional virus cases reported today, leaving the current total number of confirmed cases, since conception in the Irish Republic, at 113,322.
According to Ireland’s COVID-19 Data Hub, showing data relevant up to midnight: Sunday January 3rd, 2021, there have been 2,146 confirmed killer Covid-19 virus cases here in Co. Tipperary to date, with 521 new recorded cases in the past 14 days, an increase of 69 in the past 24 hours, to midnight last night, January 4th 2021.
Of today’s cases; 1,931 are in Dublin, 767 in Cork, 323 in Kildare, 322 in Limerick, 238 in Donegal while the remaining 1,744 cases are located across all other counties.
The number of people with Covid-19 in intensive care units is now close to the peak of the first wave, and the Health Service Executive expects this number will be surpassed by the end of this week. There are now 840 patients with Covid-19 in hospital in the Republic, with 76 patients in intensive care units.
The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mr Leo Varadkar has asked all employers to facilitate their staff by allowing them to work from home where possible at this critical time in answer to assisting the current ongoing fight against Covid-19.
An agreement between the Health Service Executive and private hospitals to provide extra capacity during the Covid-19 emergency to the public health system, is expected to be approved within a matter of days.
An Taoiseach Mr Micheál Martin has confirmed that the Government are examining the posibility of extending school closures up until the end of January 2021.

Meanwhile, staff at University Hospital Limerick, the medical facility serving North Tipperary, are receiving their Covid-19 vaccinations today.
In Northern Ireland, the Department of Health has reported 1,801 cases in the past 24 hours, with sadly a further 12 deaths.
The EU medicines watchdog has stated that it could decide whether to authorise Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine, later today. The Amsterdam-based European Medicines Agency had already fast-tracked their decision from the originally scheduled date of January 12th, due to pressure from EU countries, as infections continue to run out of control.
The Minister for Health Mr Stephen Donnelly, has stated that the Government is expected to make a decision on Wednesday morning January 6th, with regards to whether or not schools will reopen as is expected on January 11th. Professor Philip Nolan has stated that the incidence in those of school going age is at or below the population average.
There are now 744 patients with Covid-19 in hospital in the Republic, with 73 patients in intensive care units.

There are 4,962 new additional virus cases reported today, leaving the current total number of confirmed cases, since conception in the Irish Republic, at 101,887.
Of today’s cases; 350 are in Cork, 1,260 in Dublin, 652 in Limerick, 321 in Louth, 238 in Meath and 2,141 spread across all remaining counties.
In Northern Ireland, the Department of Health has reported 1,662 cases in the past 24 hours, with sadly a further 6 deaths.
Once again, one of the lowest 14-day incidence rates, per 100,000 of population nationally, is in Co. Tipperary (250.7), and Wicklow (195.2), however in Co. Tipperary, these too are rising steadily, with 130 cases confirmed in the 24 hours prior to midnight on January 2nd; leading to some 400 new cases having been confirmed here in Co. Tipperary over the past 14 days.
An Tánaiste Mr Leo Varadkar has said the situation regarding Covid-19 is alarming and further restriction levels cannot be ruled out. Same situation is confirmed by The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation who state that hospitals are under extreme pressure and any progress made on keeping case numbers down seems to have been completely undone.

The German firm BioNTech has stated that it is racing to further ramp up production of its Covid-19 vaccine within Europe, to fill the area of shortfall left by the lack of other approved vaccines todate.

The Department of Health have confirmed this evening that there have sadly been 12 further death caused by the Covid-19 pandemic; leaving the overall death toll, here in the Republic of Ireland, remaining at 2,237.
There are 1,620 new additional virus cases reported today, leaving the current total number of confirmed cases, since conception in the Irish Republic, at 91,779.
With all non-essential retail closing from 6:00pm this evening, and Gardaí rolling out a high-visibility campaign to support the introduction of full Level 5 measures; based on today’s figures Dr. Tony Holohan has expressed concern that current Level 5 measures, introduced just yesterday, may still not be sufficient to curb the current transmission of the virus.
Of today’s cases; 498 are in Dublin, 203 in Limerick, 89 in Galway, 73 in Cork, 67 in Mayo, with the remaining 690 cases located across all other counties.
Further data relevant up to midnight on Tuesday, December 29th last confirms that Tipperary has had 1,835 cases of the virus to date; an increase of 25 over the previous 24 hours.
There are now 490 patients with Covid-19 in hospital in the Republic, with 42 patients in intensive care units. Some 25 nursing homes are to receive the coronavirus vaccine from Monday next, with a full roll-out to nursing homes over the following week.
The ambulance service in Northern Ireland is ready for long delays and their hospitals have almost reached their full capacity.
