Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John H. Watson lived at 221b Baker Street between 1881-1904, well that is according to the stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. However the Baker Street to which I refer is here in Thurles, Co.Tipperary & well known to locals, who are aware that it offers a shortcut to shoppers between Parnell Street Car Park & Friar Street.
It is also now beginning to be even more recognised for another reason “The Baker Street Food and Craft Fayre,” which now takes place every Saturday from 10.00am-2.00pm.
Originally the brain child of clothing retailer Diarmuid Moran, in his effort to get more ‘foot-fall,’ benefiting businesses on Friar Street, this Saturday market is now beginning to grow, all thanks as Diarmuid admits, to local customer support and the demand by local consumers for ‘today fresh,’ food products, in preference to chlorine washed shelved supermarket produce.
Speaking to Diarmuid Moran, & Town Councillor Gerard Fogarty today, both confirmed that they were extremely surprised by the sudden interest & growth of this market to date.
Councillor Gerard Fogarty stated:- “The Baker Street Food and Craft Fayre in Thurles is already gearing up for the Summer with over ten extra stalls set to join the regular producers, over the Summer months. The Fayre is growing from strength to strength and is open to anyone who may have food or craft items to sell – a stall costs just €10.00 which also covers access to a necessary electricity & water supply.”
“From fresh vegetables to artisan foods and sweets to handmade jewellery, wooden and other crafts, and with live music, the Fayre has something to offer everyone. Based on the pedestrianised Baker Street, just off Liberty Square, Parnell Street and Friar Street, this Fayre offers ample parking spaces, within seconds walking distance, in the adjoining Parnell Street car park,” Councillor Fogarty continued.
Looking to the future, Diarmuid Moran stated:- “Presently we have space for stalls selling fresh Fish, Cheese, Meat, Art Work, Cut Flowers and Savoury Food stuffs, and I have received several enquiries recently to that end, mainly from third level students who find Summer employment difficult to access, due to the economic down-turn and who have real skills particularly in hand crafts.”
Check out our map shown hereunder to find the pedestrianised Old Baker Street Food and Craft Fayre, positioned just off Friar Street.
(Note: Why not drag the Yellow Man, on this map, to a position over “Friar Street,” to view this shopping area or take a tour of Thurles Town.)

The annual Tipperary Fayre 2012, took place on June 2nd last at The Source, Cathedral St, here in Thurles Co.Tipperary, organised by Thurles Chamber Of Commerce for the second year running.
Firstly congratulations to P.J. Shanahan (Chamber President) & Clodagh Duggan both of whom, together with Chamber comrades, organised this magnificent event, bringing together, once again, all that is the very best in Tipperary food products & crafts, produced by local growers and native artisans.
Here are just a few of the highlights of this day-long event, spoiled only by a little ‘gentle rain,’ which fell late into the evening.
Amongst the many ‘Business Stands,’ trading at this event, offering “from a needle to an anchor,’ were:- Duggan Timber Design, Joe Saunders (Public Relations & Media Research), The Craft Corner (Children’s Workshops), Mag’s Home Baking, Tulega Foods, Cabragh Wetlands (Wild Life Sanctuary), HomeBake (Gortnahoe), Thurles Co-Op Creamery, Face Painting, Inch House Restaurant, Thurles Fairtrade, The Green Bowl Company (Fruit & Veg), Jewels (Fashion Jewellery), Juanita’s Bath & Body (Soaps), John Dowling (Wood Turning), The Craft Corner (Children’s Workshops), Crack Pots (Pottery Painting Studio), For The Birds (Bird Boxes), Julia Agnes (Clothing & Head-wear Design), Donal Ryan (Wood Turning), Personalised Canvas (Handmade Gifts), Handmade Toys For U, Fruit & Nut Bakes (Breads & Cakes), Tipperary Green Business, The Tipperary Kitchen, Cooleeney Cheese, Irish Piemontese Beef, Liam Campion (Butcher), Tipperary Aloe Vera, & Fogarty Traditional Sweets, just to name a few.
The fountain spouting up from the river Suir was greatly enhanced by a Chocolate Fountain on the Source Boardwalk, ah yes!, there is something special to be enjoyed in a tub of fresh strawberries & marsh mallows covered in delicious chocolate.
Also in attendance were members of Thurles Farmers Market including Lough Bora Organic Farm, latter which can be found every Saturday morning busily trading from the grounds of Thurles Greyhound Car Park. (Whisper! There is a guy up there, from The Horse & Jockey area, selling potted geraniums for just €2.00. Track him down.)
Of course I cannot sign off without mentioning Premier Meats who passed on much knowledge on available meat cuts, not to mention carving and boning skills.
I also noticed a large turn-out of dedicated teachers in attendance for a lecture by Naomi’s Cafe, Friar Street, Thurles, which expounded the virtues of packing a healthy lunch-box. (Note to kids: Chocolate Bars & Packets of Crisps may be about to undergo a reduction in consumption in the school yard in the near future. Parents & Teachers are such spoil sports.)
Of course the big attraction at this year’s event was a cookery demonstration by renowned TV chef, Cookery School proprietor and food writer Catherine Fulvio, who operates out of Ballyknocken Cookery School and Ballyknocken House in Co Wicklow.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable event for all the family and well done to organisers, participants and supporters.
I got my first taste ever of Irish Piemontese beef at the recent “Tipperary Fayre Festival” held in Thurles recently, organised by Thurles Chamber of Commerce.
First Impressions – Simply delicious, fabulously tender. Especially loved the beef burgers. Tastes like meat used to taste.
When we talk about meat, lets be honest we men would be eating out of dustbins were it not for our discerning and dedicated women folk. So when it comes to buying meat the real connoisseur of product quality rests solely in the very capable hands of the fairer sex. This in mind, I therefore address particularly our lady readers.
Irish Piemontese beef is now a quality Irish product produced on our doorstep here in Two Mile Borris, Thurles, Co Tipperary. Better still this product will be available in McKevits Costcutters, Friar Street, Thurles from this Friday, June 8th next.
Local Two Mile Borris, farmer John Commins and his business partner Michael Fennelly from Co Laois have been breeding purebred Piemontese animals since 2005. They have imported breeding stock directly from Italy to develop an Irish Piemontese herd, with a view to bringing this healthy beef to the Irish Consumer.
Piemontese beef (From the region of Piedmont in Northern Italy) has all the nutritional benefits and flavour of beef that is low in fat, cholesterol and calories, but rich in essential fatty acids and tender every time, thanks to a specific gene natural to the Piemontese breed. The product is actually lower in fat and cholesterol than either chicken or Salmon.
Piemontese cattle are a beef breed of medium size, however the quality of commercial cuts is higher than that of bigger-sized breeds. The breed is light boned with a fine elastic skin and a low quantity of fat, thus producing lean and tasty meat that is also extremely tender.
In recent years there has been a massive increase in the popularity of this meat, but don’t take my word for it, just pop into Costcutters on Friday and taste it in-store for yourself. Personnel will be on hand to answer all or any queries.
For two long Supermarkets everywhere, have been selling us a product more akin to pre-packed, stringy, tasteless, shoe leather, so do give this product a try, I think you will be very pleased.
Note: The Irish Piemontese Beef website contains information on recipes and cooking instructions. See Link: Irish Piemontese Beef

“Rude waiters, a rat in the kitchen and what is that unidentified object floating in your soup?” This usually mean the “Meal from Hell,” but it also adds up to a most unforgettable, truly funny, night’s entertainment.
Next Friday April 20th and Saturday April 21st The Source Arts Centre, here in Thurles, will host “Faulty Towers – the Dining Experience,” starting at 7.30pm and courtesy of Interactive Theatre Australia, in association with Ten42 Productions.
The series, as most people are aware, was originally set in “Fawlty Towers,” a fictional hotel in the seaside town of Torquay, on the “English Riviera”. The plots originally centred around a rude and deranged manager Basil Fawlty (Played by John Cleese), his bossy wife Sybil (Played by Prunella Scales), a comparatively normal chambermaid Polly, (Played by Connie Booth) and a hapless Spanish waiter Manuel (Played by Andrew Sachs) latter with a limited English vocabularly and their attempts to run the hotel amidst farcical situations and an array of demanding and eccentric guests.
Acclaimed both nationally and internationally, this show is now an annual feature at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe and now Fawlty Towers comes here to Thurles for just two nights.
You can now enjoy a three course meal at “The Source Café,” served up by none other than “Manuel,” “Basil,” and “Sybil,” which will guarantee that everything that can possibly go wrong on the night, most certainly will.
Tickets are priced at €45, which includes a three-course meal, with a choice of Main Course and Desert.
Highly recommended, with guaranteed side splitting laughter! (Just one piece of advice “Don’t mention the war.”)
