Thurles and Co Tipperary Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) users please be warned and take serious note; the Irish Payment Services Organisation (IPSO) have warned that criminals are using a new scam to obtain money from ATM’s and are particularly targeting older people and those appearing vulnerable.
The Scam involves thieves placing a device into the ATM’s card slot which then traps their chosen victim’s card inside the machine. The criminal will then loiter close by the ATM to see their chosen victim keying in their pin code.
The victim on realising that their ATM card is not coming out after they have carried out their cash withdrawal, is then approached by the criminal offering assistance and claiming that this problem has happened to them previously. They then pretend that they are removing the card from the machine, while they actually hand their victim back a substitute forged card.
Ulster Bank Thurles advise that people who may have been approached in this manner and who are unaware that their card may have been substituted, should immediately contact the Fraud Reporting Line – Telephone 1800245403.
The winner of last months (July 2013) Cash Draw at Thurles Credit Union was Mr Eamon Purcell, Slieve Ardagh, Ballysloe, Thurles.
Pictured here at the presentation are Ms Michelle McCormack (Thurles Credit Union), Mr Eamon Purcell (Cash Draw Winner), and Mr Donal Scannell (CEO Thurles Credit Union).
Congratulations to the other cash prize winners, Ms Mary Walsh, Kennedy Park, Thurles, Co Tipperary; Mr Paul Manton, Urard, Urlingford, Co Kilkenny; Ms Pauline Whelan, Canal Road, Johnstown, Co Kilkenny and Mr Edward O’Meara, Bohernanave, Thurles, Co Tipperary.
Yes austerity really does work, check out the figures below, but first a big thank you from all here in Tipperary, in particular to the Labour Party who continue to support Fine Gael in saving our nation from total collapse by the introduction of laws/taxes, which fail to take into consideration a person’s ability to pay.
Figures from the CSO confirm that some 82% of households had reduced their spending in the third quarter of 2012, as a result of the economic downturn.
The category where spending was most frequently reduced was going out to pubs, restaurants etc (66% of households), followed by clothing, footwear (65% of households) and groceries (51% of households).
Over one third of households who used a car had cut back on their expenditure on this means of transport.
Some 14% of owner occupied households with a mortgage were unable to make mortgage repayments on time at least once in the previous twelve months due to financial difficulties, while on the rental side 19% of all renting households failed to pay rent on time at least once.
Over 40% of households indicated that they had experienced difficulties in keeping up with their bills and debts, while two fifths of individuals were concerned about their level of personal debt into the future.
Over half of these said that they were currently more concerned than they had been twelve months previously. Only 5% indicated that their level of concern had decreased.
Meanwhile RTE has confirmed it was €65.2m in the red last year following a major restructuring of the company. The state broadcaster insists however that it was on target to break even in 2013, and thank God the Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte is on hand to keep a close eye on their finances which in real terms of course means an increase in licence fees, through mobile phone and computer usage is about to be demanded, to ensure they do. Now with plenty of repeat programming and Pat Kenny’s wage packet no longer an issue, this will most certainly be achieved.
Looks like all the numerous holes in this rotten hulk called Ireland are now sealed and we are once more sailing on calm, clear, blue waters, into a bright, new dawn. Expect full employment by a week from next Thursday, but before that expect a few more Labour TD’s to jump overboard very soon.
As most people by now are aware, Thurles Town Council has appointed URS Ireland to manage the upcoming refurbishment of Liberty Square. Many of you will have observed their staff at work in past days, photographing areas of the town in their effort to get some idea of the town’s unique personality, as part of a consultancy process.
URS is a global supplier of multidisciplinary engineering service which provide a comprehensive range of services, including strategic consulting for new projects, advising on social, environmental and economic risk, through to the operation, maintenance and the provision of bespoke relevant solutions within the context of the environment and the communities who select their services.
Liberty Square Thurles – Thurles Chamber President Mr PJ. Shanahan
Thurles Chamber & Thurles Town Council are now inviting, you the public, to contribute to this 21st century design of Liberty Square, which is at the very heart of our local community.
Thurles Chamber President Mr P.J. Shanahan today called on the general public and the business community as a whole, to become involved in this consultation process.
Mr Shanahan stated “We want to hear your requirements for deliveries, parking, the pedestrian & cycling environment, pavement space, planting and to discuss any other concerns you might have about construction works and how it might affect, in particular the local business community. Together with Thurles Town Council we are committed to maintaining close contact with business owners on Liberty Square and all adjoining streets, during this eventual construction period.”
A select committee within Thurles Chamber (namely Mr Thomas Bourke, Mr Hugh Ryan, Mr John Butler, M/S Marie Boyle & Mr P.J Shanahan,) will meet with URS Ireland at 12.30pm on Tuesday, July 30th next, to consult and progress this project to its final stage.
Thurles Chamber are now requesting that as many persons as possible, from both public & business interests, to attend at The Source, Cathedral Street, Thurles from 3.00pm to 8.00pm on July 30th next, where UPS Ireland will be happy to hear expressions of new ideas, views, and concerns regarding this proposed and exciting project.
While Thurles Chamber refused to comment on current difficulties regarding traffic issues and town centre car parking difficulties, sources close to Thurles.Info hint that property has been purchased on the West side of Liberty Square, by Thurles Town Council (the side locally referred to as the ‘money side,’ differentiating from the North side known as the ‘sunny side,) with a view to providing extra space adjacent to this town centre area, which would possibly offer exit routes via Emmet Street, Thomond Road & Liberty Square, and are subject to further negotiations.
For Further Information – Contact Thurles Chamber (Catherine: 9.30am to 12.30pm,) at Tel:0504-49169 or URS Ireland (Deidre or Eoin,) Tel: 01-2933200.
