 North Tipperary County Council have today issued a precautionary “Boil Water Notice,” for the following areas in Thurles. The notice, in consultation with the Health Service Executive, wishes to advise consumers in the following areas only on the Thurles Public Water Supply Scheme, that in the interest of public health, it is recommended that all users boil water before use.
The areas affected are Leugh road, Racecourse road to the Hospital of the Assumption, Killinan to Ballycahill, Ballycahill to Knockalough.
This notice confirms that Water must be boiled before any consumption e.g. Drinking, Drinks made with water, Food preparation, Brushing of teeth, Making of ice and the Preparation of baby feeds (cooled boiled water may be used)
Consumers are asked to exercise caution when using boiled water and water from hot taps is not considered safe to drink, even where domestic water filters are installed. Consumers are asked to discard all ice cubes/filtered water from fridges/freezers and to renew ice stocks using freshly cooled boiled water.
Unboiled water can be used for personal hygiene (except brushing teeth), bathing and flushing toilets. Caution should be taken when bathing children to ensure they do not ingest bath water.
Every effort has been made to bring this notice to the attention of those consuming water in the affected area. If you know of consumers who are unaware of this notice, please bring it to their attention or else advise North Tipperary County Council.
This procedure will continue until further notice and further information can be had by contacting Tel: 067-44867 or Mobile Tel 087-2789541 from 9.00am to 5.00pm Mon-Fri inclusive.
The Council has been forced to issue this “Boil Water Notice,” following tests on this water supply, which showed contaminants in the system. Details regarding which contaminants were found, are as yet not revealed.
A larger than expected gathering, representative of all aspects of Thurles community life, turned out to the meeting, called by Thurles Chamber for this evening in Hayes Hotel.
Thurles Chamber, had called the meeting with a view to deciding what direction their submission should take, with reference to Tipperary’s Planning Section decision on the development of a further proposed shopping centre at the old Erin Foods site at Slievenamon Road, Thurles.
 Thurles Chamber Meeting Very quickly it became evident, from the mood of those gathered, that such a proposed venture was not welcome in the town in the foreseeable future.
Speakers from the floor, referred mainly to advice, commissioned and contained, in the Thurles and Environs Development Plan 2009-2015, regarding future Commercial and Retail Development.
While it was pointed out that the location of new retail or indeed other proposed development, is crucial to the long-term vitality of Thurles, proposals for any new retail development, that is located outside the central town area, must be assessed against the following criteria:-
(a) Does it undermine or have an adverse impact on the quality of the town centre?
(b) Does it diminish the future range of shops in the town centre?
(c) Does it link effectively with the commercial life currently existing in Thurles town centre?
It was unanimously agreed that any such decision must also take into account all potential social costs and benefits, not only the most obvious ones, which are easily measured in economic terms, but also be careful not to impose disproportional costs elsewhere, when pursuing a single objective of this magnitude. The cannibalization of existing jobs from within the town centre, was considered to be a cause for major concern in this instance.
As stated, the location of new retail development is crucial to the long term vitality, life and viability of Thurles Town and the preferred location for new retail development, where practicable and viable, should always be in the town centre.
The meeting called on the Tipperary Planning Authority, in future, to only permit development in the outer areas of Thurles, that would enhance rather than detract from the town centre, as indeed recommended in the Thurles Environmental Development Plan for 2009-2015.
Speakers strongly voiced the opinion that town centre development should be the future policy of those involved with local planning, to strengthen the town centre function of Thurles as a viable commercial, cultural and living centre, in accordance with the County Retail Strategy 2003 and the Retail Planning guidelines for Planning Authorities and the Town Centre Strategy.
A submission to this effect will now be forwarded to the Planning Authority, by Thurles Chamber in the next few days, strongly conveying the wishes of those assembled, at this evenings meeting.

Dear God,
I trust you and yours keep in good health. I did not intend to write to you until tomorrow, but every day living in this State, we appear to become more silent, corrupt and greedy.
Please understand, that I am aware that You and Your Guardian Angels are very busy at the moment, what with famine in the Horn of Africa, the state of the Euro and all the other chaos worldwide, caused mainly by individual political greed and the never ending lust for position and power.
 Miss Teresa Treacy - A Lady With Real Backbone I personally don’t ask You for much as you know, but presently, it’s gettin’ hard to tell what’s wrong from right.
On behalf of Your many confused, but faithful followers, I am hoping that, having read this letter, You might find the time to reply and perhaps offer me some wise council, since it is my belief that You haven’t been calling around this once Island of Saints and Scholars in the last number of years, due to Your heavy work commitments at more deserving locations.
Lord, allow me to explain my confusion.
A 65 year old woman, Miss Teresa Treacy, from Clonmore, Tullamore, Co Offaly, has been imprisoned in the Dochas, Women’s Prison at Mountjoy Jail, in Dublin, for the past 14 days. Her only “crime” has been to challenge ESB and Eirgrid, over the right for them to cut her security locks, trespass on her land, cut down 12,000 of her trees and build pylons on her property, without her consent.
Unlike drug dealers, rapists, thieves, murderers etc. this woman’s prison sentence will not be considered by the authorities, under their “Revolving Prison Door System,” of justice, which presently continues to operates in this country for other truly dangerous offenders.
You understand Lord that in 65 years, this woman’s only crime is that she displays, what our present political leadership lacks, namely, basic backbone, and unless she apologises to our Court system and purges her contempt, which she refuses to entertain, she must remain locked in prison with convicted murderers Catherine Neven and Linda Mulhall.
God, what confuses me is that this event is happening here in Ireland, at the same time as a Sinn Fein leader, who, through his past association with terrorism, without the support of our democratic system and who has wasted more of the Irish taxpayers money than both Fianna Fáil and our present greedy banking system put together, is being supported for the post of President Of Ireland.
Accompanying him in this race also, to get his undeserving hands on a salary worth almost €250.000 plus €317, 434 expenses, is a man who wrote letters, seeking clemency on behalf of a man charged with the statutory rape of a 15-year-old Palestinian boy in 1997. Note also Lord that this is happening in the same year that our government has suddenly realised that pedophilia is not acceptable in present society.
This is happening also in a time when those who have been allowed, by law, to willfully rape and pillage our fair land, still continue to party, using the proceeds from their looting and ill-gotten gain.
What should we be doing Lord, to correct this grave injustice in Irish society? I would appreciate your guidance in this time of silence.

The National Tidy Town’s Award Results sponsored by SuperValue were announced today and from a County Tipperary and Thurles Town point of view, these results make very interesting reading indeed.
First allow me to congratulate Killarney in winning this year’s award for the Tidiest Town in Ireland and also scooping the first prize for Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town. Out of a possible total mark of 400, Killarney gained another 3 marks above last years score of 307, winning with an overall total of 310 marks.
While it is not my personal view you understand, many Tipperary people point out that with Killarney’s God given natural scenery and the endless amount of Tourism and other public Development funding, which floods into this area on a weekly basis, it is most surprising that they do not win every year.
 Liberty Square Thurles Tipperary Ah, but pay no heed to that kind of talk, it’s all just jealousy and sure Kerry people will understand these unkind remarks. You see, unlike Tipperary, Kerry have the ability to select political representation who have real proven ability, and who actually appear for work in Dail Eireann every day, thus succeeding in ‘Bringing home the bacon,’ on a weekly basis.
Our congratulations must also go to Lismore in Co Waterford, this years winners of the Tidiest Small Town Award.
County Tipperary Tidy Towns Results
In Category A, The Bronze Medal Awards with a prize fund of €400 goes to Tipperary’s former winners Birdhill, with 306 marks and to Terryglass, with a well deserved 299 marks. Terryglass is also Highly Commended.
Also Highly Commended is Clonmel in South Tipperary with a whopping 298 marks. Now here I find myself in somewhat of a quandary, because this same year, yes 2011, IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter) branded this fair town as”Littered,” no not “Moderately Littered,” or a “Litter Blackspot,” just plain old “Littered.” Obviously one of these independent judges, and mind you I am not saying which, needs to visit a well known, tried and trusted dispensing optician.
Also deservedly Commended this year is the village of the Silvermines with 290 marks and Kilsheelan with their 293 marks.
Endeavour Awards, plus 5 crisp €100 notes apiece, goes to the Tipperary towns of Capparoe (223 marks) and not surprisingly Cashel (285 marks).
Again congratulations to the hard working Emly Tidy Towns Committee, here in Co. Tipperary who won the Sustainable Development Award and the Regional REPAK Award, latter with prize funding of €2,000.
Cloughjordan Tidy-Towns Committee, are also in the winning enclosure, taking the Climate Change Award and it’s prize fund, again of €1,000.
In Category E, Thurles was the only town in county Tipperary that did not bother to take part in this years Tidy Towns Competition. Rumor has it, (Only a rumor mind you, nothing confirmed as yet.) that the paper work got accidentally placed in the wrong envelope by our Local Town Councillors, so now you know why Queen Elizabeth II didn’t get her invitation on time, to visit her native town earlier this year, she was sent the Tidy Towns application form in error.
Ah, sure not to worry, these little accidents do happen, t’was an honest mistake and sure it happens to me self all the time, especially when I go to paying my utility bills. As the wife said last week, in the harshest possible descriptive adjectives available in the English vernacular, “You” said she in a loud voice, “Are idiotic, incompetent, ineffectual, bungling and totally unfit to be in charge.” That was me of course she is was referring too and not Thurles Town Councillors, you understand.
Heavens forbid that me missus should insult any of those fine body of men and women, who work so tirelessly, on a daily basis, giving leadership, while carrying out the wishes of their future electorate.
 While most of Ireland has received a clean bill of health in the first round of the latest survey by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL), Dublin has been slammed for its worst result in years. Large parts of our Capital City, including the approach roads from Dublin Airport as well as the North inner city, were found to be heavily littered, branding Dublin City as a “Litter Black-spot.”
The league table of just 53 areas across the country showed two thirds of towns and cities to be clean to European norms, among them the cities of Waterford, Galway and for the first time, Cork. Also for the first time since the League began, Killarney Co Kerry took the coveted accolade of cleanest town, with the An Taisce examiners calling it “A superb result for our No.1 tourist town.”
The cleanliness rating for the country as whole was the highest since IBAL began its surveys ten years ago, with over 20 towns deemed to be cleaner than their European equivalents.
Results for Tipperary, however, demonstrate mixed fortunes, in this IBAL Anti Litter League’s 1st Round Results for 2011, with the towns of Tipperary and Clonmel branded as “Littered.”
Congratulations however to the town of Nenagh, branded as “Littered,” in 2009, it has now greatly risen in the ranks and is now listed as “Clean to European Norms.”
Thurles Town did not come under the scrutiny of IBAL in their latest findings, however it was found “Clean to European Norms,” both in 2009 and 2010.
Source Of Irish Litter
Surprisingly Sweet wrappers were found to be the most prevalent source of national litter at 61%, not surprisingly Fast Food wrappers at 51%, Cigarette butts 45%, Plastic Bottles 36%, Chewing gum 34%, Plastic Bags 29%, Cans 26%, Glass Bottles 18%, Coffee Cups 14%, Dog fouling 11%, ATM dockets 10%, Bus / Train tickets 8%, Promotional flyer’s 8%.
Graffiti does not get a mention, however, IBAL has warned that the rise in vacant and derelict properties is contributing greatly to increases in litter and unsightliness in certain areas of the country.
