Autonomous i New Band Kids On The Block

We were first to warn the public of an IMF bailout, we were first to predict Spring Awakening would win the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera, now permit us to introduce you to Tipperary’s newest ‘Rock Band’ sensation, which are quickly taking Ireland by storm, meet Autonomous i.

Autonomous i are:- Frah Butler – Guitar and Vocals, Daragh Kennedy – Guitar and Vocals, Jamie Kelly – Bass and Vocals, Eddie Dwan – Violin, Synth and Damien Murphy – Drums.

Since first forming in a dark damp community hall here in Thurles, Co.Tipperary, Autonomous i have been honing their songwriting and performance skills to the point where their music is influenced equally as much from within the group as it is externally. These five lads fuse sounds together from a breathtakingly broad sonic palette and have produced a range of original tracks, for which a well stocked duke box would happily surrender it’s last dime.

The band’s live shows are varied in the extreme and the band seamlessly navigates through rock, funk and dance inspired grooves, with an infectious confidence and cheeky grins. Fronted by one of the most powerful set of lungs on the Irish indie rock scene today, Frah Butler, this band have gigged throughout the country in venues such as Whelan’s, HQ the Sugar Club and the more recently in the RDS Toys for Big Boys Expo in Dublin. The Crane Lane in Cork and are being overwhelmed with positive criticism from the likes of Duke Special who described their music as being ‘intriguing and wonderful’.

This diverse group of five very talented musicians, which include a classical violinist and dreadlocked ‘Reggae Inspired’ drummer, are no ‘Three Cord Trick Chancer’ band pushing their luck, here are music makers who have served their apprenticeship and qualified with first class honours.

Produced by Ken McHugh, this merger of intelligent lyrics together with indie rock music, 80’s style synth, soaring violin with a touch of funk and dance inspired grooves, manufacture some seriously inspired gems, like –Stand Up and Take It, Car Activate and Start Again. These three very different tracks demonstrate why Autonomous i  are not being ignored or pigeonholed by the music world!

Autonomous i can really do it live too, rapidly building a reputation for inspired, exciting, electrifying performances, seamlessly navigating through a rainbow of sounds and rhythms, which you have to experienced in the flesh, to totally appreciate.

Check out the songs, check out the website, with more dates to be added, watch out for Autonomous i at a venue near you, remembering you heard it first from www.thurles.info.

Madden NFL 11 XBox 360 Game Competition Winner

Gamer Adam Carr

Winner of the October Madden NFL 11 XBox 360 Game competition on www.thurles.info was Master Adam Carr, who wasn’t fooled by our slightly tricky question in last months competition.

Adam, aged seven, is son of Martina and Michael Carr, Borrisoleigh, Thurles, Co.Tipperary and  picked up his prize on Saturday evening last.

Gamer Adam, who is a student of St.Patrick’s Boys school, Borrisoleigh, is also a lover of reading, swimming, hurling and football and is hopeful that Santa Clause will call this Christmas and drop off a new Xbox.

We forgot to ask him if he had sent off a letter to Santa yet, however since Santa is a regular reader of this site, no doubt he will make a note and subject to availability, will deliver on Christmas Eve.

Our thanks to The Gaming Liberty, who kindly sponsored this lovely gamers prize.

Watch out for our Special Competition to be announced prior to Christmas.

Spring Awakening Wins Waterford Festival of Light Opera

After what can only be described as a sensational 10 night run in The Helix Theatre in Dublin last September, it was a foregone conclusion that the cast of NYMT‘s Spring Awakening would be invited to compete in this year’s Waterford International Festival of Light Opera 2010, latter celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

This unbelievably talented cast, under the direction of John Donnelly and which included top Tipperary performers Chris Britton, Ed Leamy and Shane Willoughby, latter playing the role of ‘Georg’, like Julius Caesar, came, performed and conquered.

Amongst the awards at last night’s banquet in Waterford the cast of Spring Awakening walked off with awards for; Best Lighting, Best Costumes, Best Set, The Special Adjudicators Award, Best Musical Direction and the much coveted Best Overall Show Award for this year’s Waterford International Festival of Light Opera.

Adjudicator for this year’s Waterford International Festival of Light Opera was Tony Finnegan, holder of many comedy, acting, singing and directing awards to his own credit, including directing the World Premier of ‘Requiem for Julie ‘ in the Rupert Guinness Theatre, Dublin and author of the children’s musical, ‘Once Upon a Nursery Rhyme ‘, which was premiered in Northern Ireland in 2000.

Running from November 2nd – 13th and showcasing productions from award winning amateur musical societies at home and abroad, this festival takes place each year in the very stylish and newly refurbished Theatre Royal in Waterford city.

Affectionately known as the “mother of all festivals,” the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera is the premier event of its kind in these islands.

The line-up this year included Seussical The Musical, Nunsense, Pirates of Penzance and Jekyll & Hyde. There was also homage to the 80’s with The Wedding Singer, the afore mentioned Irish premiere of Spring Awakening and the Festival closed yesterday with Sweeney Todd.

All in all, it was one of the most adventurous line ups in years and worthy of their 50th anniversary celebration.

Here’s to the next 50 years.
