It is “Ready, Set, Go” for Halloween Festivities at Holycross Market, here in Holycross, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, tomorrow, with their extra special “Holycross Pumpkin Fest” taking place.
A host of spooky and other spectacular events will take off, promising to entertain young and old and guaranteeing the very best in family fun.
Market organisers will be seeking those skilled conker fighters to participate in the “Tipperary Conker Championship” which will result in a trophy and prizes for both the winner and runner-up.
Don’t forget Ruadhán Gormally, that incredibly talented Galway born puppet maker, who was recently featured on the Ryan Tubridy Show, will be here in Holycross Market tomorrow, to entertain and delight with a collection of his best puppets.
A “Muppet Monster” style Puppet will also be raffled off as part of the afternoon’s much anticipated festivities.
As stated, the market will be extending their opening time by one hour, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, with lots of extra music, tricks, treats and other shenanigans, for children and adults, in honour of this truly Irish tradition.
Meanwhile; the market organisers of this Holycross Market Pumpkin Fest, want to keep the family fun rolling out over the full Halloween holiday, with other ‘spooktacular’ Halloween activities after their market closes.

The much anticipated Tipperary “Conker Championships” will take place at the “Holycross Market Pumpkin Fest”here in Holycross, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, on Saturday October 30th from 1:00pm – 4:00pm; reviving a tradition first mentioned as a sport by Poet Laureate Robert Southey in his memoirs published in 1821.
But first, those of you who have never competed previously will need to get some practise under your belt, for this event. So to understand and learn more about preparing and winning this “Conker Championship”, please watch the video hereunder.
We understand from the Holycross Market Committee that a beautiful trophy, hand crafted locally, awaits the winner, with first place also earning a purse to the value of €50 in cash, and with the runner-up earning €25. “A nice little earner”, what with Christmas looming on the horizon.
So with tomorrow being Sunday; designated “a day of rest”, insist that Mum & Dad take you to the nearest Horse Chestnut tree, then choose a few conkers and start practising. Remember the championship is just a week away.
Warning: Having watched the video; Kids do ask Dad to drill the hole in your Conker, so that you do not skewer your hand or fingers, injuring yourself before the event.

On October 30th, there will be an extended opening time from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, with lots of extra music, tricks, treats and other shenanigans for children and adults, in honour of this truly Irish tradition. Yes, that’s right! Halloween, is an Irish tradition, owing its origins to the Celts and first celebrated over 2000 years ago.
The Celts celebrated the end of Harvest on the last day of October as part of a holiday called Samhain. They believed that on this day, spirits came and killed their crops. To keep the spirits happy and at bay, the Celts left out food to treat the spirits and danced and dressed up wearing masks and costumes to keep the spirits entertained.
When Christianity arrived in Ireland, this tradition evolved. ‘All Souls’ Day‘ begun to be celebrated on November 2nd to honour the dead. November 1st became a day to honour the Saints or All Saints Day, also known as, All Hallow’s Day. October 31st became All Hallow’s Eve, which eventually morphed into the word Halloween.
Hundreds of years later, Halloween is celebrated all around the world, with children and adults alike, still dressing up, enjoying treats and telling ghost stories, and they owe it all to the Irish.
Robert Douglas Fyfe, a native of Kirkcaldy in Scotland; best known for his role as Howard in the long-running British sitcom “Last of the Summer Wine”(latter created and written by Roy Clarke), has sadly passed away, at the age of 90 years.
Mr Fyfe joined the long-running BBC show in 1985 and remained a cast member for 25 years until its final episode, played out in 2010.
Thurles.Info readers will remember “Howard Sibshaw” (played by Robert Fyfe) was Pearl’s (played by Juliette Kaplan) henpecked husband who was always trying to hide his passionate affair with “Marina” (played by actress Jean Fergusson).
Mr Fyfe’s acting career saw his appearance in the first episode of ‘Dr. Finlay’s Casebook’ in 1962. He was also viewed as the lollipop man “Malcolm Lagg” in ‘Coronation Street‘ in December 2012. He made further appearances in ‘Z Cars’, ‘Angels’, ‘The Onedin Line’, ‘Survivors’, ‘The Gentle Touch’ and in ‘Monarch of the Glen’.
His film credits include; ‘The 51st State’, ‘Cloud Atlas’ and ‘Babel’.
Mr Fyfe’s wife, Diana, had sadly passed away just a few weeks prior to his own, leaving behind three sons; Timothy, Nicholas and Dominic.
Sadly, also his co-stars Juliette Kaplan, who played ‘Pearl’, and Jean Fergusson, who played ‘Marina’, both passed away in 2019.
English actor John Spurley Challis (1942 – 2021), best known for portraying Terrance Aubrey “Boycie” Boyce in the long-running BBC Television sitcom “Only Fools and Horses”(1981–2003) has sadly passed away today, at the age of 79 years, following a battle with cancer.
Mr Challis will also be long remembered from the “Only Fools and Horses” spin-off “The Green Green Grass”, as well as “Monty Staines” in the ITV sitcom ‘Benidorm’.
Announcing the passing of Mr Challis, his family stated: “It is with heavy hearts that we bring you such sad news. Our dear friend and yours, John Challis, has died peacefully in his sleep, after a long battle with cancer. He will always be loved for being ‘Boycie’ and leaves a great legacy of work that will continue to bring pleasure and smiles for many years to come. Please respect the privacy of John’s family and friends at this difficult time, and be assured that in the future there will be an occasion to celebrate John’s life, when everyone will be welcome to come along.”
Co-star Sir David Jason also paid tribute to Mr Challis, labelling him “a wonderful actor” and also “a gentleman in the true sense of the word.”
