 A man has appeared before Ennis District Court this afternoon, following the seizure by Gardaí, of cannabis herb, with an estimated street value of over €30,000.  It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, on Saturday 16th September 2023, of Mr Jimmy Spratt, Derryvilla, Glengoole, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, and formerly of Bundoran, Co. Donegal. Pre-deceased by his parents Tom and Bridie, sisters Rosie and Patricia, brother Philip; Mr Spratt passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. His passing is most deeply regretted by his devoted wife Eileen, sons James, Thomas, Stephen, Michael, David and Damien, sister Mairead, brothers Thomas, Michael, Marty and John, daughter-in-law Emma, son’s partners, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, extended relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends. Requiescat in Pace. Funeral Arrangements. The earthly remains of Mr Spratt will repose in his home, at Derryvilla, Glengoole, Thurles [E41 T3C7], on Tuesday afternoon, September 19th, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm same evening.  Two Tipperary students winners of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE) title this year (2023), have secured second place at this year’s EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) held in Brussels. Former students of Abbey School in Co Tipperary, Shane O’Connor and Liam Carew collected special recognition and approval from the EUCYS judging panel for their winning BTYSTE project titled “Assessing the impact of second-level education on key aspects of adolescents’ life and development”. Their project which involved surveying 2,000 students, aged between 12 to 19 years, nationally across the island of Ireland, fully investigated the impact of educational experiences on each students social, physical, and mental well-being. Shane and Liam The EUCYS judges were impressed with the depth of research undertaken, which revealed the significance of secondary school in shaping the social development of most students. Shane O’Connor and Liam Carew at EUCYS, competed against more than 130 young scientists, ranging in age from 14 to 20 years, all who representing 36 countries, including EU member states as well as the US, Canada, and South Korea. Students are being encouraged to prepare and submit entries for the 60th BTYSTE, same scheduled for January 10th to 13th, 2024, due by Monday, October 2nd 2023. Tipperary native Ms Alannah Manton, latter a contestant in the Junior Eurovision.
Readers will remember that Charlie McGettigan performed with Paul Harrington, to win the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, with the song “Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids” [words and music provided by Irish songwriter and novelist Brendan Graham] Charlie has worked with artists like Maura O’Connell and Eleanor Shanley who both recorded many of his songs including “Feet of a Dancer”, “A Bed for the Night” and “If Anything Happened to You” posted hereunder. Charlie’s songs have been recorded by many artists including De Danann, Mary and Frances Black, Ray Lynam, Daniel O’Donnell, Sandy Kelly and Hal Ketchum; to name but a few.
