Home Of Lady Thurles To Be Fully Restored

The 16th Century Norman ‘Black Castle’ In Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Is To Be Restored.

The former ‘Black Castle’, west of Liberty Square, close to the Charles Stewart Parnell carpark, in Thurles, Co. Tipperary; once home of Lord Viscount Thomas Butler & his wife, Lady Viscountess Elizabeth Butler (alias Poyntz), has been sold.

Dr. Phyllis Maher, [Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Timothy Maher Finance]; Independent Dáil Éireann Deputy Mr Michael Lowry, TD & Sir Timothy Maher, [Chairman & Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Timothy Maher Finance]

The privately-owned building had been offered for sale in May of last year by the Kenny family; relatives of the late Mr Billy Maher (Victualler), through the offices of Mr Sean Spain Auctioneers & Valuers, No 21 Fianna Rd, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

The hugely historical building, in vacant possession, has now been purchased by Sir Timothy Maher (Knight of Innisfallen & Chairman & Chief Financial Officer (CFO), of Timothy Maher Finance) & his Lady wife American born Dr. Phyllis Maher (Chief Executive Officer (CEO), of Timothy Maher Finance). The couple are also well respected in antiquities and fine art circles.

Sir Timothy Maher, well remembered for his hurling prowess as a student in Cashel CBS, is originally a native of Boherlahan, Cashel, Co. Tipperary; son to the late Mr Michael Maher & Mrs Dina Maher, Castle Farm, Thurlesbeg, Co. Tipperary.  His grandfather was Mr William Maher, Knocka, Drom, Co. Tipperary; a former Chairperson of North Tipperary Co. Council, whose son Fr. Thomas F. Maher, in turn was ordained a priest in St Patrick’s College, Thurles, now Mary Immaculate College, Thurles.

His wife, Dr. Phyllis Maher, who is a retired Medical Practitioner and who in the past specialised in serious trauma cases; is the only daughter of Mr Woodrow (Sean) O’Shields & Mrs Mildred O’Shields (nee O’Sullivan), natives of Oughterard, Co. Galway. Dr. Maher was conceived in Ireland and born a shortly time later, following the arrival of her parents in America.

Of course, the surname of ‘Butler’  is no stranger to the new purchasers, as Mr David Butler, former business proprietor in Liberty Square, Thurles and his sister M/s Jean Butler, a former Principal at the Presentation Convent here in Thurles for some 18 years; we discover, are Sir Timothy Maher’s in-laws.

The purchasers were first introduced to the property by Independent TD Deputy Mr Michael Lowry, who became aware that the couple were searching for a substantial property here in Ireland and suggested that they contact Mr Sean Spain, with a view to purchasing a building with a rich historical heritage. Following Mr Lowry’s invitation and a viewing of the property led by Mr Spain; Sir Timothy and Dr. Phyllis Maher; themselves lovers of Irish history, fell in love with the building and made their decision to purchase.

The successful firm of DHRyan Architects, No.1 Liberty Square, Thurles, have now been employed to undertake a feasibility study of the site and its associated buildings, and to prepare a development brief for the new purchasers. Solicitor Mr James J. Meagher (Thomas F. Griffin Parnell St, Thurles) have been retained to deal with all aspects of the site transfer.

Speaking afterwards to individuals with a major interest in promoting tourism within Thurles and the greater Co. Tipperary area, Michael Lowry TD stated; “I forecast exciting times ahead over the next 16 months for the town of Thurles; where a historical and iconic building, which was falling into dereliction, will rise once more to enhance our westerly horizon.”

“It should be noted” stated Lowry, “that the building may have become known as the Black castle in the past; due to it appearing as a black silhouette against the setting sun, however I remain confident that the new developers, through their love of history and antiquities, will give Thurles a sense of even greater pride in the months ahead, as necessary work is completed.”

So, who was Lord and Lady Thurles
Lady Thurles, (Elizabeth Poyntz) was formerly a native of Gloucestershire, England, and history records that her parents, who resided in Acton Court, Gloucestershire, once hosted King Henry VIII and the second and the most famous of his six wives, Miss Anne Boleyn, both who visited and stayed with the Poyntz household on Saturday August 21st, 1535, thus emphasising the social standing of the then Poyntz family. (Anne Boleyn was subsequently executed by King Henry, being beheaded, less than one year later, on the 19th May 1536.)

Thomas Butler (Lord Thurles) was son of Walter Butler “Walter of the Rosaries,” latter probably the first of the Butler family to take up residence in the Black Castle. [Note: The “Walter of the Rosaries,” Chalice still exists in Thurles to this very day. Thomas married Miss Elizabeth Poyntz in 1608, against her father’s wishes; Sir John Poyntz was then seriously in debt, and would die penniless in 1633.

Lord Viscount Thurles was summoned from Tipperary by King James 1st, (1603–1625) to England in 1619 to answer charges of treason, but the ship, conveying him, was wrecked in a storm off the coast of Wales, in an area known as ‘The Skerries‘ and he was drowned 10 days before Christmas, on 15th December 1619.

His wife Lady Elizabeth Butler (Poyntz), the celebrated ‘Lady Thurles’ now found herself a widow and a lone parent of three sons and four daughters.

After the death of Lord Viscount Thurles, Lady Thurles, married again, less than one year later in 1620, Captain George Mathew of Radyr and Llandaff in Glamorganshire, Wales, by whom Lady Thurles had a further two sons and one daughter.

Captain George Mathew died at Tenby in Wales in 1636.  A period portrait, oil on canvas, of Lady Viscountess Thurles is in the possession of the Tipperary County Library, situated in The Source building, in Cathedral Street, Thurles.

Elizabeth and Thomas Butler, through their first son James FitzThomas Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond, is a direct progenitor (ancestor) to Charles Prince of Wales, whom readers will know as the eldest son and heir apparent to the British throne, set to follow the present Queen, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England.

The late Princess Diana is also connected to the history of the castle through one of the daughters of the said Lord Thomas and Lady Elizabeth of Thurles, (namely Mary Butler).  She married into the Hamilton family, and her later descendants would eventually marry into the Spencer family, leaving the late Princess Diana a 12th cousin, twice removed, of Charles, Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay since 1952.

Despite a visit from Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarian army during the period 1658 to 1660, Lady Thurles and her children resided in the castle for a great deal of her life from her marriage until her death in 1673.

Monks Carol Singers Helping Local Charities Again This Xmas

“Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me”.  –  St Matthew 25:40.

Reporter Tom Ryan.
For over two decades the multi-talented and festive, jolly Carol Singers from “The Monks” licensed hostelry here in Mitchel Street, Thurles, have been in harmony to generate the true spirit of Christmas here in Thurles town. They are familiar easy to be identified figures usually to be found located in various areas around Liberty Square at this time of year, as they entertain the local populace with perennial Christmas favourites.

This year will be no exception according to singer and guitarist Mr Peter Lanigan a member of the Monks troupe, who stated that the response by the public has always been most heartening.

The group were on duty over last weekend and will be on duty again on Thursday Dec 21st from 5.00pm until 7.30pm in Liberty Square and will be featuring that acknowledged classic Christmas favourite by ‘The Pogues’ (Tipperary’s Shane McGowan) and featuring Kirsty McColl, “Fairy Tale of New York” (written by Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan), regarded as the most poetic and tragic tale of shattered dreams and love gone sour, around Xmas time.

Helping local charities again this year.
“Every solitary penny goes to charity”, confirmed Mr Peter Lanigan, “with the troupe having contributed some €60,000 to good causes, locally, over the years, e.g. St.Vincent De Paul, Meals On Wheels, Thurles Mental Health Group, Thurles Day Care Centre, Thurles Community Hospital of the Assumption, Suir Haven, Anusha and ThurlesCare.  Now, for our group of volunteers that’s the true meaning of Christmas”.

The ‘Monk’s troupe have their very own rendering involving a very full repertoire, including; “Blue Christmas”, “Silent Night”, “The First Noel”, “Deck The Halls With Boughs of Holly”, “Rocking Around The Christmas Tree”, “Go tell It On The Mountain”, “White Christmas”, “Jingle Bells”, and “Rudolf, the Red Nosed Reindeer”, but to name just a few.

Mr Peter Lanigan, (Moyne Road, Thurles) latter a leading member of the “Monks Carol Singers” and a regular vocalist at the weekly Monks traditional music nights; held each Wednesday evening, wishes to thank the kind folks who support their singing troupe annually, and in particular he wishes to thank Mr Declan O’Sullivan (Star Systems) for supplying amplification over the years.

“Gifted harmonica player, Mr Vic Heywood, who like carol singer Brian Keady, has worked in Lisheen Mines, has kindly prepared the books of carols for the singing troupe, who are always welcoming new members”, stated Peter.  “Vic did a lovely job on the books which this year has very much a Christmas aspect about them, thus enhancing the happy and colourful mood of this season of peace and joy”, continued Peter, latter himself renowned for his vocals, when singing poet Patrick Kavanagh’s “Raglan Road” and many other popular Irish ballads.

Traditional music, at the Monks, has been played for well over 25 years each Wednesday night and many great musicians and singers, have graced these nights regularly over the years. Eoghan O’Neill from the Rosegreen, Cashel area and who played with “Moving Hearts”, together with “Celtic Women” and is featured on Mick Hanly’s CD, “Homeland”, is certainly no stranger to the “Monks” on his nights off here in Ireland. So also, former Irish Republic striker Niall Quinn, a visitor the Monks and his sister, Annemarie (Dwyer) who performs annually with the Monks Carol Singers.

The Monks from HiddenTipperary on Vimeo.

Of course, it is all thanks to Michael O’Gorman (affectionately himself known as “The Monk Gorman”) and his family who embraced the music on his return from Dublin, to take over the running of his family’s public house, ‘O’Gormans of Mitchel Street’, Thurles.  Michael’s hospitality to all local and visiting musicians is hailed as unique in many ways, and for this he is to be congratulated, as it sets an image of our town for the many visitors from all over the world who visit Thurles and who enjoy the Wednesday night session, including them as an integral part of their visit.

Ciaran Hanrahan recorded his first “Ceili House”, ably assisted by Pat Costello, from the Monks and Ciaran still uses parts of the recorded script from that night in some of his present day Ceili House recordings.

In the past: to raise money for the Guardian Angel School, Thurles; a tape was recorded ‘Live at The Monks’ and then, was following with a recorded CD, “Ag Cuardaiocht ag an Monks”.

Then there was the night with the “D’Unbelieveables” (Comedians Pat Shortt and Jon Kenny), with one of the proudest people there on that night, the long serving Wednesday night musician, Pat’s Shortt’s dad, Christy.  This event was recorded in conjunction with a programme being compiled for television about Pat and Jon’s native towns and their association with the goings on locally. People came from far and wide to enjoy the craic on the night.

When the last County Fleadh Cheoil was held in Thurles, the Monks hosted many singers and musicians from around Tipperary and beyond.  These included Joe Barry; a piper from Templemore John Ryan; Willie Fogarty Nenagh; Nora Butler Nenagh, latter famous for her ballad singing; Dan Larkin of Garrykennedy, himself famous for his fiddle playing and in whose pub, many a great session was held. Also, not to be forgotten were Michael Harty from Cahir and formerly Ballyvoneen, Thurles; and legendary Eileen O’Brien –Minogue.

Great musicians who frequented the Monks also included Phil Murray from Upperchurch, whose accordion-playing is legendary; Teresa Bourke, whose summer schools in music are very popular; Teresa Larkin on accordion, latter who has made many recordings and of course let us not forget the many who play every Wednesday night to the delight of tourists and locals, e.g. the talented Paul Byrne, Dixie Byrne, Sean Byrne, Tony Power, Timmy Lyons, Paddy Gleeson, Toss Hayes, Johnny McCarthy, Peter Lanigan, together with Michael O’Gorman’s talented teenage daughter, to name but a few.

So, if you do see the Monks Carol Singers performing around Liberty Square next Thursday, halt awhile before sparing a thought for those worse off in our community, and please drop your spare change into their collection buckets. Even a little can mean a lot to some people at Christmas time.

Space Tourism – Thurles Xmas Advert Soars Out Of This World

“The rotation of earth really makes my day.” (Think about this quote. Get It?  OK continue on anyway.)

Captain’s Log, Star-date December 6th 2017:-

Tourism Ireland’s senior delegates, envoys and ambassadors, today were described as being somewhat deflated, having launched a failed stratospheric advertising campaign to highlight Sceilg Mhichíl, latter a rapidly decaying rocky outcrop, west of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, and which played a small role in the latest Star Wars saga, ‘The Last Jedi’.

The Force Awakens

Tourism Ireland’s billboard rose skyward just 33km (20.5 miles) above planet Earth, launched with the help of a weather balloon, while a similar Thurles billboard jetted to an amazing altitude of some 435 km (just over 270 miles) propelled by means of reboost manoeuvres, using a Briggs & Stratton rocket boosted lawn mower engine, one day previous.

One of the many images captured during the launched Thurles Stratospheric Advertising Campaign, as it headed for the “Dark Side”.  One “Black Hole” was located during the campaign, found in a black sock, worn by a launchpad crew member.

A spokesperson for the Templemore – Thurles Municipal District stated that Tourism Ireland’s attempt to be the first to advertise in space had failed miserably, firstly; since it was launched the day after the Thurles space departure, and secondly; no single human or alien had actually viewed the image on the billboard, while it remained in space. This project therefore must be perceived as the greatest waste of taxpayers money (to use the words of Rowan Atkinson in Black Adder) since, “Olaf the Hairy, King of all the Vikings, ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside”.

The Thurles launch however had been viewed, as it flew past, by the crew of Expedition 53, all arsing around on board the International Space Station (ISS).  Expedition 53, made up namely by Mr Joe Acaba, Mr Alexander Misurkin, Mr Mark Vande Hei, Mr Sergey Ryanzansky and Mr Paolo Nespoli, were all ordered by Commander Randy Bresnik, to scramble and man their laser weapons, fearing, understandably that they were about to be interfered with by an alien craft from outside our galaxy.

A grinning spokesperson for the Templemore – Thurles Municipal District stated, “The Thurles picture advert, which was launched skyward earlier, featured an image of the Christmas lights in Liberty Square, Thurles, Co Tipperary, and fully demonstrated the fullest commitment yet, that Tipperary Councillors and Politicians from all political parties were fully behind efforts to continue our growth in tourism in the area”. “Demands for access to visit Thurles have been unprecedented since the lights were switched on”, he continued.

The Thurles Stratospheric Advertising Campaign was launched from beside the Stone Man here in Liberty Square, in the town at 3.07 hrs GMT and returned from orbit safely, to exactly the same precise area, at 14.00 hrs; thus landing before our daily traffic-jam of parents had emerged to collect their offspring’s from schools and collages.

God help us and those who manage our public finances, if not “May The Force Be With Us”.

Littleton, Thurles, Co. Tipperary – The World War II Connection

One minute after Britain formally declared war against Germany, which took effect on September 3rd, 1939, a Blenheim IV of No 139 Squadron took off to fly the first sortie of the war for the Royal Air Force. Same was a photo-reconnaissance operation. In the future these aircraft were to become involved in the defence of London and would serve with Coastal Command in anti-shipping, reconnaissance, and a variety of other roles, right up until 1942.

Pictures L-R (1) Laurence Slattery, Littleton Thurles, Co. Tipperary, pictured in a Berlin POW hospital bed. (Celtic studies expert & Nazi propaganda radio broadcaster Dr. Hans Hartmann is to be seen standing on the left of his bed). Picture (2) Rare picture of Laurence Slattery after WW II, with a violin case under his arm. Picture (3) A Bristol Blenheim IV, which Laurence Slattery navigated. Picture (4) Today, the once home of Laurence (Larry) Slattery, and his father Michael Slattery (a National School Teacher), situated in the townsland of Ballymoreen, Littleton, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

The fighter version of the Blenheim IV aircraft normally carried four machine guns in the bomb bay, while the standard crew would comprise of a pilot; a navigator/bomb-aimer; and a wireless operator/gunner. The navigator would sit in the nose of the aircraft at a plotting table, situated just below the port side of the canopy.

On September 4th 1939, just one day later, Laurence (Known locally by the shortened name of Larry) Slattery, a native of Littleton, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, took off on a Bristol Blenheim IV.  His aircraft was later shot down over the sea at Wilhemshaven, west of Hamburg, latter a coastal town in Lower Saxony, Germany, while attempting to drop leaflets; as confirmed by Irish Military Archives.

The aircraft’s pilot, Willie Murphy, a native of Mitchelstown, Co Cork, died some days later from his injuries, whilst Larry Slattery survived, sustaining wounds which included a broken foot and a broken jaw, latter obtained when his face struck a machine gun-turret.  The pilot, Murphy would become the first recorded British fatality of World War II, and Larry Slattery from Littleton village, would became the first British Prisoner of War (P.O.W.) to be captured by the Germans.
