Thurles Fundraiser For Paediatric Resuscitator

 Marie Harnett Reports;

Thurles Farmers Market

Thurles Farmers Market

A fund-raising morning will take place next Saturday 16th March at Thurles Farmers Market, in Thurles Greyhound Track car park, (Latter opposite main entrance to Semple Stadium), to help raise money to purchase a much needed Paediatric Resuscitator for the Paediatric Unit in Clonmel General Hospital.

Paediatric emergencies in primary healthcare centres are serious events that occur more commonly than envisaged. This initiative therefore is very necessary to procure this essential piece of equipment and comes with the full backing & support of all nursing staff working at the Hospital.

A ‘Resuscitator,’ is essential in a modern Paediatric Unit and can play a major role in the Recovery Unit for young patients.

Clonmel Paediatric Unit

The Paediatric Unit in Clonmel currently has 17 beds and cares for children, from newborn infants up to the age of 16 years, all who suffer with a wide variety of illnesses.  On the ward there is a Paediatric Emergency Room, in which all the children who attend South Tipperary General Hospital are dealt with, except trauma cases, who attend in the main Hospital Emergency Department.

This Unit also runs a ‘Day Ward,’ from 9.00am to 2.00pm, 5 days each week.  The Unit provides shared care with Crumlin Children’s Hospital and Temple St. Children’s Hospital.  This saves Oncology and Cardiac patients from having to travel long distances to Dublin for treatment which can be provided locally, thus saving an added financial burden and unnecessary travelling disruption in daily family life.

Thurles Farmers Market stall holders will provide teas and coffee, etc. to all who attend at this fund-raising event on Saturday morning next in their marquee and you the public are encouraged to make a small contribution to this worthy cause.

Following on from next Saturday mornings event, all local Vintage Clubs, in association, are holding a Vintage Rally in Dualla on Sunday 24th March at 12.00pm, as a not to be missed fund raising effort.

It is expected that this latter will be a major event, with lots to do and see and all are invited to come along and share, so do remember the dates.

Recruitment Of 11 Staff At Thurles Hospital Of Assumption

Deputy Noel Coonan TD

Deputy Noel Coonan TD

Noel Coonan TD confirmed last Thursday morning that €500,000 and the recruitment of 11 staff will commence immediately for the Thurles Hospital of the Assumption, thus leading to the restoration of 10 short stay beds. The good news was clarified in the HSE Mid West Service Plan published on Thursday afternoon.

The Plan brings more good news for North Tipperary with the announcement of the completion of capital development for Borrisokane Day Care Centre and that home help hours will now be restored to 2012 levels.

Speaking to Thurles.Info yesterday on this issue the Fine Gael TD stated, “This announcement follows a commitment given to me by my colleague Health Minister James Reilly. He assured me that difficulties would be overcome and beds would reopen in the Hospital.
I am delighted Minister Reilly stayed true to his word. As a local representative, I have a duty of care to the hospital. I persistently pursued this issue ahead of the publication of the Service Plan. We have had difficulty securing permanent staff in the past but I was always hopeful there would be positive news for the Hospital,”
continued the local TD.

I want to acknowledge the hard work carried out by the staff and Management at the hospital, by the Community Hospital of the Assumption Action Group and Friends of the Hospital of Assumption who I kept in close contact with and who were constantly briefed about any developments. I also want to thank them for their patience and dedication.
The HSE are working within a very restricted Budget, following the previous Government’s gross mismanagement of our economy, but both I and the HSE have been working strenuously to resolve difficulties and North Tipperary, in particular the Hospital of the Assumption, was identified as priority. I brought this important issue to the attention of my colleague Health Minister James Reilly at every given opportunity in Dáil Eireann. I attended meetings with the Secretary General of the Department and the HSE and I have been relentless at highlighting how significant this issue is for the people of North Tipperary who need adequate step down care for their families and friends,”
continued Deputy Coonan.

Coonan Welcomes Launch Of Bullying Action Plan

Deputy Noel Coonan & Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald.

Deputy Noel Coonan & Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald.

Speaking to Thurles.Info this morning North Tipperary Deputy Noel Coonan TD warmly welcomed this week’s publication of the new Action Plan on Bullying which sets out conduct necessary to prevent and tackle bullying at both primary and second level schools throughout County Tipperary and indeed nationwide.

As part of the Budget in December, we secured €500,000 in funding to support the actions identified in this plan. This is the first time the Department of Education has had a ring-fenced budget for tackling issues related to bullying. This clear plan sets out 12 actions and 13 recommendations for further consideration. The report makes it clear that preventing and tackling bullying requires support from parents and the wider society in County Tipperary and is not a problem schools can solve alone. These measures are very welcome and will really help raise awareness about the impact of bullying and how this sensitive issue can be effectively combated,” stated Deputy Coonan.

Among the 12 actions recommended by the working group, are proposals to support a media campaign focused on cyber bullying specifically targeted at young people as part of Safer Internet Day 2013, the establishment of a new national anti-bullying website and the creation of a co-ordinated plan of training for parents and for school boards of management,” continued Deputy Coonan.

The plan will also review current Teacher Education Support Service provision to identify what training and Continuous Professional Development teachers may need to help them effectively tackle bullying.
Last year, the Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn TD, and the Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald TD, held an Anti-Bullying Forum, which invited submissions from interested parties and stakeholders. This has fed into the new Action Plan on Bullying which has the potential to make a real difference in how we tackle this problem in our schools,” concluded Deputy Coonan.
