Lar Corbett Admitted To Tipperary Hospital

Corbett-DelaneyThurles Sarfields 2010 GAA hurling Star of the Year and Tipperary left corner-forward Lar Corbett was admitted to South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel, last night, as a precaution, to assess the possibility of two suspected broken ribs and possible kidney damage, following his outing in Nowlan Park, Kilkenny yesterday.

The Tipperary hurling great Corbett and Kilkenny star J.J. Delaney were both issued with straight red cards, around the 44th minute of the match, having become entangled in a serious off-the-ball altercation.

While it is unclear when Lar actually suffered these injuries, footage shown on TV, clearly demonstrated Delaney striking Corbett’s helmet, however this was possibly only part of a confrontation, which had begun earlier, as the pair pressed for match dominance.

The anticipation of a one-match ban for both players should see the players left out of their counties opening provincial games, against Offaly and Limerick, while the uncertainty now regarding Corbett’s future fitness will certainly raise concerns, during the weeks ahead.

Tipperary wish Lar a speedy recovery to full health.

Tipperary Air Ambulance Crash Report

air ambulanceA final report into the crash landing of an Air Ambulance helicopter near Borrisoleigh, in Tipperary, has established that the pilot & crew did not see power lines until too late to avoid a collision.

The helicopter had been responding to a call from a seriously ill patient, latter who was later transferred to hospital by road, when the collision happened on June 19th of last year.
The report by a special Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) was first published today. It shows that the pilot identified two parallel sets of overhead wires in the selected fields; however neither he nor the other crew members spotted another set of cables, on their final approach to land. Failure to do so resulted in the helicopter, which had 3 people on board at the time, striking the cables.

While a paramedic and a Garda on the ground had spotted the overhead cables, latter individuals had no direct communication to warn the pilot and this was considered a contributory cause.

The Air Ambulance was just airborne for some 20 minutes when the collision occurred and came down heavily in a field in the townsland of Currabaha, approximately 6 kilometres from the village of Borrisoleigh.

The pilot was complimented by witnesses on the ground for his controlled landing ability of the craft, which happened thankfully without any loss of life.

Tipperary – Nenagh Hospital Laboratory To Close

HSEThe Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed that Laboratory Services, currently undertaken at Nenagh Hospital in Co Tipperary, will close in July 2013 and move to Dooradoyle, Limerick.

Currently a seven-day backlog exists in blood testing in Limerick and the HSE have now requested that about 12 staff, currently working in Nenagh, together with all equipment, be transferred from Tipperary to Limerick.

In recent years, all acute hospital services in the Mid West Region; namely Dooradoyle, Croom (Mid-Western Regional Orthopaedic Hospital), Nenagh, Ennis, St Munchin’s (Mid-Western Regional Maternity Hospital ) and St. John’s Hospital Limerick, have been reorganised with all complex surgery and medicine being transferred to Dooradoyle.

Day only Case Work was expanded in Ennis, Nenagh and at St John’s, with ambulance services upgraded by the introduction of paramedics.

The HSE claim that reconfiguring & centralisation of this laboratory service will mean a much improved overhaul for both General Practitioners & their patients, together with savings for the taxpayer of approximately €1.5m per year, while also resulting in no job losses for any laboratory staff.

Geographically, the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, Limerick, is within 30 miles of Ennis, St John’s and Nenagh hospitals, and is connected by a motorway to Ennis and Nenagh. This affirms that all medical samples can now be transported within a 30 minutes time scale, to this now proposed single central laboratory unit.

However, medical samples from General Practitioners here in Thurles, will now be delayed by at least an extra 30 minutes in delivery time.

Mid-Western Regional Hospital Limerick Trolley Bound

THSEhe Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick has appealed, for the second time in less than a week, for people not to attend its emergency department, due to overcrowding difficulties.

There were some 38 people restricted to trolleys at the hospital this morning, the largest number of patients confined to trolleys in Ireland today.

Limerick Hospital authorities state that they are unable to explain why this emergency department has been so overcrowded in recent days, since no particular illness has been identified as being a source.

Members of the public from Thurles & North Tipperary, who are forced to depend on this hospitals services, were today being asked not to attend the emergency department at the Regional Hospital in Limerick, unless it is absolutely necessary and were being asked instead to attend their GPs, latter who have also been informed of the crisis at the hospital.

No €124,000 grant aided “three in a bed,” promotion by the HSE in the Mid-West Region it appears.
