 The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) and Lidl have announced (Thursday, 29th June 2017), that all ‘batch codes’ and all ‘best before dates’ of the product “What’s Cooking?” Meat Free Mince (454g) are to be recalled, due to the possible presence of small pieces of blue plastic.
The FSAI have added that point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in all Lidl stores.
Coincidentally, The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) and Aldi Stores Ltd. had announced (Thursday, 27th June 2017) two days previously is was recalling batches of Mae’s Kitchen Frozen Meat-Free Mince, due also to the possible presence of small pieces of blue plastic. Point-of-sale recall notices will also be displayed in Aldi stores.
Ms Geraldine O’Rourke, of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service, reports:-
The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) will attend at ‘The Dome’ in the grounds of Semple Stadium here in Thurles, Co. Tipperary in the coming days.
Their mobile unit will be in place on four dates next week:-
(1) Monday June 26th, from 2:00pm – 5:00pm.
(2) Tuesday June 27th from 5:30pm – 8:30pm.
(3) Wednesday June 28th from 5:30pm – 8:30pm.
(4) Thursday June 29th from 5:30pm – 8:30pm.
So where possible do please attend and help save a life by giving blood.
Facts of which everyone should be fully aware:
- One in four people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives.
- Only 5% of the population are regular blood donors.
- Over 1,000 Irish people receive transfusions every week in Ireland.
- (A) One car accident victim may require up to 30 units of blood; (B) A bleeding ulcer could require anything between 3-30 units of blood, and (C) A coronary artery bypass may use between 1-5 units of blood.
- Approximately 70,000 patients will have transfusions in Irish hospitals this year.
- Some 3,000 blood donors are needed each week in Ireland.
- A unit of blood lasts for just 35 days.
- Some blood packs for new born babies or cancer treatment only lasts for 5 days
- There is no substitute for human blood.
- The IBTS supply 71 hospitals in Ireland with blood and blood products 365 days a year.

 Cannabis Sativa Four men; two from Nenagh, in Co. Tipperary, have been arrested in connection with the seizure of an estimated €200,000 worth of cannabis plants.
As part of an ongoing investigation into the sale and supply of drugs; the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, the Special Crime Task Force and local drugs units carried out a number of searches yesterday, Friday June 9th 2017, and uncovered a cannabis grow house, containing plants with an estimated street value of €200,000.
The searches undertaken targeted Nenagh in Co Tipperary; Castlebar, Co Mayo, and Dundalk, Co Louth.
The men arrested are understood to be aged 29, 37, 38 and 45, and are being held at various Garda stations under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Ireland’s recent rate of cannabis usage is similar to the rest of Europe, averaging 14%, but, worryingly for Ireland, our usage has increased by 6% since 2003. This fact is despite Ireland having the fourth highest expected prison sentence, 12 years, for supplying 1kg or more of cannabis.
Mars Ireland and Mars Chocolate UK are voluntarily recalling certain Galaxy Smooth Milk Chocolate bars, Galaxy Minstrels, and Galaxy Counters and Teasers bars, which they admit may potentially carry Salmonella.
Following routine testing the company fear that some of their ingredient product may carry the potentially deadly bacteria and warn consumers not to eat the affected confectionery .
The products affected, listed below, all have a ‘best-before’ date of either May 6th 2018 or May 13th 2018.
 The known products being recalled are listed hereunder :
(A) Galaxy Milk 200g Bar – product code AC76R, batches 719G1SLO00, 719G2SLO00, with the best before date of May 6, 2018, and batches 720A2SLO00, 720B1SLO00 with the best before date of May 13, 2018.
(B) Galaxy Milk 42g Bar – product code AN22R, batch number 719G2SLO00, with the best before date of May 6, 2018.
(C) Galaxy Milk 4x42g Multipack Bars – product code AF67D, batches 719G1SLO00 and 719G2SLO00 with the best before date of May 6, 2018.
(D) Galaxy Counters 112g Pouch – product code AW99G in Ireland, batch numbers 720B1SLO00 and 720C1SLO00 with best before dates of May 13, 2018.
(E) Galaxy Counters 78g Treat Bag – product code AW99N, batch number 719G2SLO00, with the best before date of May, 6, 2018.
(F) Galaxy Minstrels 118g Pouch (Sweet Nights In promotion) – product code BJ30K, batch number 720B1SLO00, with the best before date of May 13, 2018.
(G) Maltesters Teasers 35g Bar – product code AX46E, batches 720C1SLO00 and 720D2SLO00 in the UK and Ireland, with the best before date of May 13, 2018.

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Same develops 12 to 72 hours after infection, and the illness can lastup to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however diarrhoea and dehydration may be so severe that it becomes necessary to enter hospital.
Persons who have impaired immune systems, some older adults, and infants are at highest risk.
 The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today report that seven ‘Closure Orders’ and one ‘Prohibition Order’ were served on food businesses during the month of May, for breaches of food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.
The Enforcement Orders were issued by environmental health officers in the Health Service Executive.
The Closure Orders and one Prohibition Order relate to premises in Dublin, Sligo, Wicklow, Donegal and include one ‘Closure Order’ in Co.Tipperary.
The Tipperary ‘Closure Order’ refers to the food preparation area and associated food activities at the Maid of Erin public house, situated at No’s 9/10 Church Street, Tipperary Town, Co. Tipperary which has now been declared a ‘Closed Area’.
This closure does not preclude or impede, in any way, the service of drinks in the bar areas of the premises.
