According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as and from yesterday, farmers across Ireland will once again have an opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous wastes from their farms; same to be collected nationally at ten collection points, during the months of October and November.
The location and dates for this year’s farm hazardous waste collections in Co. Tipperary are as follows:
Date: 25th October – Location Nenagh Mart, Co. Tipperary.
Date: 14th November – Cahir Mart, Co. Tipperary.
Note: Collection centres will open from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. on the dates shown above.
Hazardous wastes are unavoidably generated through the normal everyday running of a farm, from engine oils & filters to residues of pesticides; and out-of-date veterinary medicines. The removal of these potentially dangerous substances represents a major step in improving farm safety, while reducing the serious pollution risks associated with accidental spillages.
Over the course of this campaign, some 2,000 farmers are expected to participate by bringing along surplus agri-chemicals and other hard-to-manage wastes. The safe disposal of these waste products is important for every farmer in keeping the farmyard safe for themselves and their family; in producing quality-assured products; and in maintaining Ireland’s green and sustainable image.

Darren Hehir came first in the Emergency Medical Technician category, with his colleague James Kershaw from Drogheda.
Michael Quinn, aged 17 year, won first place in the First Aid Responder Individual category, after a very impressive performance.
A proud ‘Officer In Charge’, Catherine O’Loughlin complimented the competitors adding that “Thurles took part in five of the seven tests and came home with three trophies; the only unit attending to come home with more than one. This builds upon the great success that the Thurles Cadet Corps had achieved at their competitions in July. It has been a great year for us in terms of competitions and training. We continuously strive to promote the best training and patient care standards in our members.”
Catherine continued, “We are very grateful to the instructors and all those who assisted in training over the previous couple of months. Well done to Eoin and Niamh Fitzpatrick who took part in the Emergency First Responder, and Assistance with Activities of Daily Living tests respectively. We look forward to building upon this success in Limerick next year.”
Our Cadet Corps would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Tipperary Education and Training Board, the National Lottery, and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs for their recent grant of funding and ongoing support.
Food Producers in Co. Tipperary have welcomed the news that the Environmental Protection Agency are to announce two new research projects, to be funded through the Science Foundation Ireland’s Investigator Programme.
As part of this strategic partnership the Environmental Protection Agency will co-fund two five-year research projectsv as follows:
- Trinity College Dublin (Frank Wellmer) – looking at crop protection (A new avenue for crop protection: generating Brassica cultivars with supernumerary trichomes).
- University of Limerick (Michael Zaworotko) – looking at clean energy (Green Adsorbents for Clean Energy).
These awards were announced at the Science Foundation Ireland Award Ceremony which took place in Trinity College Dublin this week.
Alice Wemaere, EPA Research Manager, stated: “We are delighted to build on the success of previous collaborations between the Environmental Protection Agency and Science Foundation Ireland. The two projects awarded funding today have the potential to yield significant environmental, economic and societal benefits for Ireland and will add to the range of EPA research that provides pathways to a low-carbon, sustainable future. The EPA wants to maximise the impact and benefit of its research funding for society and will therefore continue to seek co-funding and strategic collaboration opportunities to support environmental research.”
This SFI Programme is designed to support the development of world-class research and human capital in the areas of science, engineering and mathematics (STEM), that demonstrably support and underpin enterprise competitiveness and societal development in Ireland.
Tesco supermarkets are recalling all best before dates and all batches of its Cookie and Cream Biscuit range.
The biscuits are understood to contain milk which is not mentioned on the label. This could make the implicated batches unsafe for some consumers who are allergic to or indeed intolerant of milk or its constituents.
Tesco request that customers please return the affected products to any of their stores, where a full refund will be given, with no receipt required from the consumer.
Should you require further details, consumers are advised to contact Customer Services directly on Tel: 1850 744 844.
Tesco apologises to customers for any inconvenience which may have been caused.
Allergy Alert Notification:
The Irish Food Safety Authority has confirmed on August 15th 2017 that Supermarket chain Lidl Ireland are recalling three Vemondo ready meals, due to the labels and ingredients being listed as not being in the English language.
(1) The Vemondo Vegan Ready Meal Mushroom & Barley Risotto contains barley, mustard and celery. (2) The Vemondo Vegetable Gnocchi in Spicy Tomato Sauce contains wheat and milk, while the Vemondo Vegetable Curry with Polenta, contains milk and mustard.
The Food Safety Authority state that these products may be a risk to consumers who are allergic to, or intolerant of cereals containing gluten (barley and wheat), milk, mustard and celery and or their constituents.
Elevated Levels of Histamine:
The Irish Food Safety Authority recently also have confirmed (On July 28th 2017) that Lidl Ireland have recalled Inismara Irish Mackerel Fillets, (pack size: 300g, approval number: IE CK 0086 EC ), due to elevated levels of histamine.
[Histamine is an organic nitrogenous compound involved in local immune responses as well as regulating physiological function in the gut and acting as a neurotransmitter for the uterus.]
Although the affected batch is already past its ‘use by date’, consumers may have this effected batch no stored in their freezers, since the label indicates that the product is suitable for home freezing. Consumers who have the aforementioned implicated batch kept frozen at home, are advised not to eat it.
Confusing in this case is the fact that Inismara Irish Mackerel Fillets are labelled in the Irish Food Safety Authorities report as “Country Of Origin: Unknown“.
It appears that there is no ‘farm to fork’ traceability with Mackerel Fillets.
