The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tony Holohan, has stated that every individual in Ireland should consider themselves potentially infectious.
The Department of Health have confirmed this evening that there have sadly been 13 further death caused by the Covid-19 pandemic; leaving the overall death toll, here in the Republic of Ireland, remaining at 2,226.
There are 1,718 new additional virus cases reported today, leaving the current total number of confirmed cases, since conception in the Irish Republic, at 90,157.
Of today’s cases; 358 are in Dublin, with 164 in Cork, 155 in Louth, 150 in Donegal, and 112 in Galway, with the remaining 779 cases located across all other counties.
Further data relevant up to midnight on Monday, December 28th last confirms that Tipperary has had 1,810 cases of the virus to date; an increase of 12 over the previous 24 hours.
An Taoiseach Mr Micheál Martin has confirmed that the Republic of Ireland will move to full Level 5 restrictions in an attempt to get the latest surge of Covid-19 cases under control.
All schools will remain closed until at least January 11th, under this revised plan, as will a ban on all household visits together with the closure of non-essential retail outlets. A 5km limit on travel will also come into force.
The HSE has stated they have seen a 41% rise in the demand for Covid-19 testing, with 63,000 referrals seen over the past week. They expect to see that number double next week, as the virus cases sharply increase, particularly among the 21-30 age group and the 31-40 age group latter which accounted for 18.5% of all testing referrals. Most of the worst concerns from before Christmas have now been fully realised.
Meanwhile in Northern Ireland, sadly, a further 6 deaths have been reported by their Department of Health. Alarmingly, a further 2,143 new cases have been confirmed as positive.

There are 1,546 new additional virus cases reported today, leaving the current total number of confirmed cases, since conception in the Irish Republic, at 88,439.
Of today’s cases; 444 are in Dublin, 203 in Cork, 111 in Louth, 87 in Limerick, 85 in Donegal, with the remaining 616 cases located across all other counties.
Further data relevant up to midnight on Sunday, December 27th last confirms that Tipperary has had 1,798 cases of the virus to date; an increase of 7 over the previous 24 hours.
Minister for Health Mr Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that the Cabinet will meet tomorrow to consider further restrictions, in light of the rising number of Covid-19 cases and increased hospitalisations. Just one week ago, there were 234 patients in hospital, but now there are 411; a 75% increase, with 34 in intensive care.
Some 66% of cases today are under 45 years of age.
Meanwhile in Northern Ireland, sadly, a further 14 deaths have been reported by their Department of Health. A further 1,566 new cases have been confirmed positive.
The distribution of an initial 200 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, latter developed by Pfizer / BioNTech is expected to be completed for all of the European Union, by September 2021, at the latest.

There have been 150 confirmed killer Covid-19 virus cases in Co Tipperary in the past 14 days, with the worst hit area being Carrick-on-suir, in the South of the county. Further data relevant up to midnight on Saturday, December 26th last confirms Tipperary has had 1,791 cases of the virus to date.
There were 359 people with Covid-19 in hospitals in the Republic, with 30 in intensive care.
Meanwhile in Northern Ireland, a further 20 deaths have been reported by their Department of Health. A further 1,634 new cases have been confirmed positive in the past 48 hours.
Here in the Republic, Dr. Colm Henry has stated that vaccinations in our 582 nursing homes around the country, will commence on January 4th. 2021. An Tánaiste Mr Leo Varadkar has stated that vaccinations would start in acute hospital settings to “build confidence”, before moving to nursing homes next week. He further stated that medical experts in the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) wanted vaccines to start in latter stated settings, in the unlikely event that something went wrong, such as allergic reactions. Tomorrow will see the first Pfizer / BioNTech vaccines administered in acute hospital settings in Cork, Galway and Dublin.

There are 744 new additional virus cases reported today, leaving the current total number of confirmed cases, since conception in the Irish Republic, at 86,129.
However, a larger increase in cases are expected to be reported over the coming days, due mainly to the lower volume of testing being carried out over Christmas Day and yesterday.
Of today’s cases; 246 are in Dublin, 131 in Cork, 51 in Limerick, 40 in Wexford, and 33 in Donegal, with the remaining 243 cases located across 19 other counties.
There were 324 people with Covid-19 in hospitals in the Republic.

Health Service Executive Chief Mr Paul Reid has stated that the HSE intends to begin vaccinations on December 29th 2020, a day earlier than originally planned. Germany and Hungary were among those to begin vaccinations yesterday.

There were 260 people with Covid-19 in hospitals in the Republic as of 8pm last night, up four on the previous evening, with 25 Covid-19 of these located in intensive care, 13 of whom were on ventilators.
Meanwhile in Northern Ireland, a further 20 deaths have been reported by their Department of Health, taking their death toll to 1,271. A further of 998 new cases have been confirmed in the past 48 hours.
