Your Country Needs You So Please Shop Local

Michael's Jewellers, Westgate, Friar Street, Thurles, Tipperary.

I have said it before and to the annoyance of many, I will repeat myself, “Wealth in Ireland each day is becoming more and more concentrated around just a few people in this our country.”  We as a community can slow down this trend simply by, “Shopping Local,” not only this Christmas, but throughout the year ahead.

(Please click on both the images shown on left to view greater detail, and note that items displayed are Irish made, with a retail value of between €35 and €165.)

The unique character of your local community is defined in large part by the businesses that reside there, and that plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value of you own home and property.

Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally.  Plus the more jobs you have in your local community the less people are going to have to commute, which means more time and less traffic and pollution.

In shopping locally, you won’t have to travel far and when we are lucky enough to have a town center like we do in Thurles, you can park once and find all you need within easy walking distance.

When you spend money in local family run businesses, it circulates locally. That money goes back into the community in taxes, rent and in many other ways, which helps keep our town and our community thriving.

Michael's Jewellers, Westgate, Friar Street, Thurles Tipperary.

Presently in our community, people are mourning the fact that each person cares only for themselves and not that we care for one another as a whole community. The future well being of Thurles depends on your well being and your future well being depends on local Thurles businesses.

At our small local shops you can find some great unique items that aren’t available at the bigger stores and people in these shops who value your continued custom, will support you fully in any after care service.

Many people this year will surf the Internet in search of Christmas gifts for family and friends. They will purchase items which offer little guarantee and, when received, in reality will bear little resemblance to what they expected. Foreign companies and their economies will benefit greatly, at a time when your own country most needs your support.

Each of the top quality items, (Shown in the images on your left) are available locally here in Thurles centre, can be examined locally, repaired locally, so therefore why not shop locally and support your local community.

This year more than ever your country and local community need your support, lets be patriotic.

Remember Before You Buy: Local businesses are owned by people who live in our community, are less likely to leave seeking to profit even further, by a cheaper labour force abroad, and are more invested in our community’s welfare and future.

Award Winning Author Sebastian Barry Visits Tipperary

Irish author Sebastian Barry

Internationally acclaimed  Irish author Sebastian Barry will visit Tipperary Libraries on the weekend of the 18th & 19th of November.

Sebastian is the focus author of this year’s Tipperary Reads Festival. He is also the author of the popular titles ‘The Secret Scripture,’ the recently Man Booker nominated ‘On Canaan’s Side,’ and ‘A Long Long Way.’ (Note: Copies of these books can be purchased from Bookworm here in Thurles.)

Over the past few months the people of  Tipperary have been reading his novel making it the most borrowed title in Tipperary Libraries during July and August. Described as “unsurpassed in World War One fiction,” this novel deals with the realities of war for the young Irish soldier set against the turbulent background of 1916 Ireland.

This is the fourth year of the Festival which has previously played host to writers John Banville, Joseph O’Connor and Tipperary native Frank Delaney. The idea behind the Festival is to celebrate the joy of reading and to foster a sense of community by bringing people together through the shared experience of reading.

Lorraine Treacy, “Tipperary Reads Festival” organiser, says that  “We are really thrilled to have the opportunity to bring an author of such high standing to Tipperary. Now readers and writers will have the opportunity to meet Sebastian, and to discuss his work with him.”

Sebastian will be in Clonmel Library on Friday 18th November at 7.30pm. On Saturday 19th he will be in Nenagh Library at 3.00pm and that evening he will be in Thurles Library, The Source at 7.00pm.

All are welcome to attend and here also is a once in a lifetime chance to give that ‘special someone,’ a unique Christmas gift.

Suggestion:- Purchase a copy of one of Sebastian Barry’s excellent publications and have it personally autographed by the author for that special friend to read and forever cherish.

Thurles Coal Prices Slashed At Centenary Co-Op

We all remember the unprecedented cold weather experienced last January. For many consumers the rising cost of fuel prices is a cause of grave concern, as we head into the coming winter months. Cheer up folks, because we have got news for you.

As and from Monday morning next at 9.00am and available only while stocks last, Centenary Co-Op here in Thurles have reduced the price of their premium grade Polish coal to just €14.95 per single 40kg bag.

Well actually I have just done the sums and it gets even cheaper if you are prepared to buy in bulk, e.g. One tonne of coal, which is equal to 25 x 1 bags, will go on sale for €330.00 which is equivalent to €13.20 per each 40kg bag. If on the other hand you purchase a pallet containing 40 x 1 bags of coal, the cost is less again, just €525.00 or approx €13.125 per each 40kg bag.

Many households could find themselves financially unable to fork out €525.00 all in one go, so here is the trick to take full advantage of this great offer. Get together with three neighbours and buy, as a small Co-Op of four people.  You can do the sums yourself – €525.00 divided by 4 = €131.25 or ten bags of coal per household.

For those who use Briquettes in large quantities, there are huge savings here also, with bulk buying of 80 bales of Irish briquettes at €269.00 or €3.3625 per bail.

Note: All prices are cash collected and available only while stocks last, so take full advantage and save a considerable sum on your heating costs this winter. You can contact Centenary Thurles Co-Op, direct, during normal business hours, at Telephone:- 0504 21522.

Click on “Shop Icon” shown on the centre of map hereunder, for directions to Centenary Co-Op, Thurles.
