The much anticipated Tipperary “Conker Championships” will take place at the “Holycross Market Pumpkin Fest”here in Holycross, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, on Saturday October 30th from 1:00pm – 4:00pm; reviving a tradition first mentioned as a sport by Poet Laureate Robert Southey in his memoirs published in 1821.
But first, those of you who have never competed previously will need to get some practise under your belt, for this event. So to understand and learn more about preparing and winning this “Conker Championship”, please watch the video hereunder.
We understand from the Holycross Market Committee that a beautiful trophy, hand crafted locally, awaits the winner, with first place also earning a purse to the value of €50 in cash, and with the runner-up earning €25. “A nice little earner”, what with Christmas looming on the horizon.
So with tomorrow being Sunday; designated “a day of rest”, insist that Mum & Dad take you to the nearest Horse Chestnut tree, then choose a few conkers and start practising. Remember the championship is just a week away.
Warning: Having watched the video; Kids do ask Dad to drill the hole in your Conker, so that you do not skewer your hand or fingers, injuring yourself before the event.
Next & Very Important: To enter for this event you need to text Sean @ 086 173 0621, to register.
Happy Halloween everyone!

Congratulations to Thurles Shopping Centre, situated south east on Slievenamon Road in the town.
Thurles Shopping Centre Upgraded Front & Rear.
The recent beautiful landscaping undertaken, over the past fortnight, has truly enhanced not just the shopping centre building itself, while also adding to the overall customer experience of feeling safe and secure, not forgetting granting to consumers a further air of relaxation, without the worry of time limits related to car parking charges demanded in our town centre.
To the rear of Thurles Shopping Centre, wheel chair access has now also been added, for those using the ‘Thurles River Walk’ and wishing to avoid continuous heavy traffic; thus all adding to a more untroubled and contented shopping experience within the town.
The five consumable items, pictured hereunder, are being recalled by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), due to the presence of the unauthorised pesticide ethylene oxide. This pesticide is forbidden in Europe, as it is known to be carcinogenic and mutagenic.

Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not permitted for use in foods sold in the EU, but is approved for use by other countries outside the EU.
Although the consumption of the contaminated products does not pose an immediate acute risk to health, there is an increased risk if there is continued consumption of ethylene oxide in contaminated food over a long period of time. Therefore, exposure to ethylene oxide needs to be minimised.
Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with and retailing the implicated batches.
Ethylene oxide is also used as a surface disinfectant that is widely put into service in hospitals and the medical equipment industry, to replace steam in the sterilization of heat-sensitive tools.

Ann Lanigan Reports:
“Tomorrow is the first of our block of Autumn markets and we look forward to welcoming new vendors including Cathal, an entrepreneurial local student who is bringing a sporting angle with hurleys, sliotars, jerseys, shorts and much more, a must for all GAA enthusiasts.
We have many familiar faces returning with their popular products, including arts and crafts, artisan bakes, hot foods, coffees, healthy breads, free range meats, fruit and vegetables.
There will be live music and poetry to enjoy as you avail of the beautiful surroundings of the historic village of Holycross.
Following on from the outstanding success of ‘The Eco Laundry Egg’ promotion as part of the market Environmental policy, we’re delighted to raise awareness with this market’s Eco promotion “all about the kitchen sink”. These products are not only environmentally friendly, but are also financially sound solutions.
We have stewards on hand to help in any way necessary and there is ample parking behind the Abbey Church. Check out our social media market updates on Facebook and Instagram or contact us on thevillagemarketholycross@gmail.com“
