Child Welfare & Protection In Sport Training

lit Tipperary Sports Partnership is facilitating a ‘Child Welfare & Protection in Sport Basic Awareness’ training. This course is aimed at sports leaders, children’s officers, parents or anyone working with young people in sport.

A central goal for all those involved in sport for young people is to provide a safe, positive and nurturing environment, where children can develop and enhance their physical and social skills.

Promoting a child-centred environment should go hand in hand with identifying and eliminating practices that impact negatively on safe and enjoyable participation in sport for young people.

Workshops
The next series of workshops will be delivered by Sport Ireland tutors on October 19th, at the LIT Campus in Thurles, starting at 6.00pm sharp.

This training will enable Children’s Officers/Sports Leaders to:-
• Implement best practice in protecting the welfare of participants.
• Create a child-centred environment within the sports club.
• List categories of abuse and some indicators associated with abuse.
• Make an appropriate response to a disclosure.
• Make a report to designated officer or appropriate Statutory Authorities.

Prior registration with Tipperary Sports Partnership is necessary, so please contact them to obtain a registration form. A nominal fee of €15 is required to secure your place. Please book early as places will be limited on the workshop.

A ‘Certificate of Attendance’ will be awarded to those taking part on full completion of the course.

Head Of Irish Cancer Research To Visit Templetuohy, Thurles

Proceeds raised in July last, at a ‘Coffee Morning’ in Templetuohy in aid of Cancer Research, will be formally presented to Dr. Robert O’Connor, Head of Cancer Research with the Irish Cancer Society, on Saturday night next, October 1st, 2016, in the Templetuohy Community Centre, (Latter situated at Main Street in the village), at 8.00pm sharp.

As many people will be aware, Dr. Robert O’Connor recently took over as the new Head of Cancer Research with the Irish Cancer Society. He joined the Society from Dublin City University (DCU), having successfully lectured in Biological Sciences in the School of Nursing & Human Sciences and as Senior Programme Leader in Translational Cancer Pharmacology Research at the National Institute for Cellular Biotechnology.

A 46 year old family man, whose parents came to reside in Co. Tipperary some ten years ago; Dr. O’Connor is no stranger to Irish TV viewers, having held a significant track record in laboratory cancer research and also extensive experience in the interdisciplinary field of translational cancer research and chemical trials.

During this event Dr. O’Connor will give a short informative lecture, which will be followed immediately by a question and answer session for all those in attendance.

All wishing to attend this free event in Templetuohy Community Centre, are heartedly invited to do so; after which a cup tea will also be served.

Thurles Garda Station Open Day for Secondary Schools – Wednesday 7th September 2016 – Time: 9.30am to 4.00pm.

Following on from their extremely successful Public Open Day last September (2015), Thurles Garda Station will again host an ‘Open Day’ pacifically targeting Post Primary School students throughout the Thurles Garda District. This event will cover the areas Borrisleigh, Templemore, Thurles, Ballingarry, Littleton and Killenaule and will take place next Wednesday September 7th 2016 from 9.30am – 4.00pm. The event will target, in particular, attendances from 4th, 5th and 6th year classes.

“We are anxious to make information freely available to young people who may have an interest in policing, not just as a future career, but those also wishing to obtain a clearer understanding of the true role played by An Garda Síochána in local communities throughout the length and breadth of Ireland,” stated Garda Connolly.

Solely a Thurles Gardaí organised event; off-duty officers of all ranks will be making themselves available at Thurles Garda Station to provide information and answer the many queries from students regarding the day-to-day demands placed on Irish police in their role as guardians of the peace. They will also be joined, where possible, by persons operating other essential services and with whom our police force liaise, often on an hourly basis, e.g. the Ambulance Service & Fire Brigade etc.

Schools who have already confirmed their wish to be in attendance on the day will include:- St. Mary’s Templemore; Our Lady’s, Templemore; Templemore College; Scoil Naomh Cualan Borrisleigh; Presentation Secondary School, Ballingarry; St Kevin’s, Littleton; Ursuline Secondary School, Thurles; Presentation Secondary School, Thurles; Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed, Castlemeadows, Thurles and Thurles C.B.S.

During next Wednesday’s event expect to see members of the Garda Mounted Unit on the streets around Thurles, together with Tipp FM Radio and Irish TV, who will also be in attendance on the day.

As part of the event on Wednesday next, students will receive information on matters pertaining to Crime Prevention; Garda Training; the Garda Reserve; Thurles Text Alert; ‘Know Your Patch’; ‘AFIS’ (Fingerprinting), and ‘Evidezer’ (Breath Analysis), together with many other interesting facts pertaining to the everyday life of a serving Irish police officer.

In attendance also will be members of the Garda Dog Unit; Regional Armed Response Unit; Drugs Unit; Traffic Unit and Public Order Unit.

All in all this very positive event promises to be a most enjoyable and informative experience for the young people in our society.

Services For People Deaf & Hard Of Hearing

The next clinic which offers services for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing will be held on Monday 5th September 2016 next, from 10:00am to 1:00pm in St Mary’s Health Centre, Thurles, Co Tipperary.

This is a free service where you can acquire information regarding hearing loss; guidelines for good communication and information on available equipment for your home, which will help you to hear your doorbell, phone, smoke alarm and television.

They also provide information on Irish Sign Language, Tinnitus and Lip-reading; so do come in and have a chat, with no need for an appointment.

HSE hearing aid tubing can be changed and batteries for all hearing aids can be purchased for €2 for a pack of 6. Family members and local agencies are also welcome to seek advice.

Note: They do not service, fit or issue hearing aids at this clinic.
