 Third level students in association with their parents/guardians residing in Tipperary and elsewhere, latter who may be hoping to receive grant funding for their next student academic year, are being urged to immediately submit their applications before August 1st 2014.
The Students Universal Support Ireland, better known as SUSI, state that those applying will also need to send in all relevant documentation to support any future request. Some 100,000 applications for the new 2014/2015 academic year are expected and 75,000 applications to-date have now been received.
The closing date for all applications for such Third Level Grants will expire one week from tomorrow (Friday).
Spokesperson for SUSI, Mr Graham Doyle, has warned that people should now submit their applications at the earliest possible convenience, prior to the stated closing date, thus avoiding inevitable and unnecessary delays or even indeed disappointment.
 Nineteen-year-old Mr Richard Tynan, a student from the Cistercian College, Roscrea, Co Tipperary, took a bronze medal at the prestigious International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Taipei, Taiwan last week.
The 26th International Olympiad in Informatics was held in Taipei, Taiwan, from the 13th to 20th of July 2014 and this event annually represents the pinnacle of computer programming at secondary-school level with over 311 students from 82 countries attending this year’s event; their mission to solve six complex algorithmic problems over a two day period. Algorithms are used for calculation, data processing, and automated reasoning.
Previously Richard, a native of Portarlington, Co. Laois, had taken first place in the Senior Individual Technology Section for his project ‘Advanced Modelling and Infilling Algorithms for 3d Printing’ at this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Competition.
He also won the Analog Devices Technology Award, for the student who showed outstanding achievement in technology, winning an all expenses trip to San Francisco, Silicon Valley and to Stanford University.
Mr Gary Conway who led this year’s Irish delegation in Taipei, is delighted with Richard’s win of Ireland’s first IOI medal in five years.
Richard has now been invited to study computer science at the University of Cambridge in England.
 An Irish Summer Camp, ‘Bí Réidh’ (Translation ‘Be Ready’) will be held this summer here in St. Patrick’s College in Thurles.
Two weekly camps will run from 28th July – 1st August and from 11th August – 15th August. These camps will be non residential and will run from 9.00am to 6.00pm each day.
The aim of Bí Réidh is to prepare students for the certificate examinations held in Irish, and will include the development of aural and oral skills using enjoyable and innovative methods while at the same time cultivating a love of our Irish language.
This is a total immersion programme encouraging both the understanding and also the use of the Irish language in a wide variety of social settings and fun activities.
Note Course Dates
Course A – 28th JULY – 1st AUGUST 2014 – for current first and second year students.
Course B – 11th AUGUST – 15th AUGUST 2014 – for current transition and fifth year students.
Venue: As stated St Patrick’s College, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
Time: 9.00am – 6.00pm Monday to Friday. Do keep in mind that ‘Bí Réidh’ is a non-residential course.
Course Fee: €150 per pupil per week (inclusive).
 Its official; Ireland’s fittest girls in 2014 are students attending the Ursuline Secondary School, based here in Thurles, Co Tipperary.
A total of 13,067 students (7,242 boys and 5,825 girls) from 26 counties across Ireland successfully completed the Aviva Health’s Schools’ Fitness Challenge for 2014.
Not only were improvements in fitness observed amongst participating students after the relatively short period of exercise intervention, but the results show that boys are now 45% fitter than girls compared to 60% fitter last year, meaning that girls are closing the gap in fitness levels compared to boys.
It should be noted that students who completed the Schools’ Fitness Challenge experienced, on average, almost a 19% improvement in their fitness levels.

A Tipperary student joined forces with his Dublin colleague to take gold at the gala final of the 2014 DARE2BDRINKAWARE.ie competition, held in the Smock Alley Theatre Dublin this week.
The project “Don’t Lose Sleep Over Where You’ll Wake Up,” by DCU students Mr Sam Pearson from Roscrea, Co Tipperary and Miss Aisling Sinclair from Dublin, was championed by Miss Caroline Twohig.
Their campaign which reached audiences of over 165,000 on Facebook and also included a number of elements, including a website, interactive drinks calculator, animation piece and viral video, focused on the real-life consequences arising from excessive alcohol consumption. Their extensive marketing and PR campaign supporting the project resulted in significant coverage across all social media in recent months earning them the gold prize of €3,000 for their efforts and skill.

The DARE2BDRINKAWARE.ie competition which is organised by drinkaware.ie, saw seven teams short-listed in the competition, each receiving up to €2,000 each to implement their proposed campaigns.
