Gardaí are seeking your help after a man, understood to be aged in his forties, was hospitalised, following a serious assault on the roadway outside Greenane Drive, in Tipperary town, Co. Tipperary.
The assault is understood to have taken place in the early hours of this morning (at around 2:00am), leaving the victim, in a serious but stable condition in University Hospital Limerick.
Following enquiries by investigating Gardaí, two men have since been arrested and remain currently in Garda custody at Garda stations in County Tipperary; detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of Greenane Drive, Tipperary town between the hours of 1:30am and 3:00am, and who may have information in relation to the incident, to contact them.
Any person with such information, including road users or pedestrians, and who may have dash or other camera footage, to immediately contact investigating Gardaí at Tipperary Garda Station, Tel. No. 062 80670, the Garda Confidential Line Tel.No. 1800 666 111, or indeed any Garda Station.
The Minister for Justice, Mrs Helen McEntee TD, has today announced the appointment by Government of two new Data Protection Commissioners, namely Dr. Des Hogan and Mr. Dale Sunderland. Their appointments will take effect from February 20th 2024, for a five-year term.
Dr. Des Hogan has been appointed as Chairperson by the Minister.
The Data Protection Commission has grown significantly in size, scope and responsibility over the last decade. Following a review by the Department of Justice into how best to support this growth, the Government decided to appoint two additional Commissioners, who were selected following an open completion run by the Public Appointments Service.
Minister McEntee said: “The Data Protection Commission has played a pioneering role in enforcing the GDPR across Europe as the lead supervisory authority for a large number of technology and internet platform companies with EU headquarters in Ireland.
The two new commissioners will support an effective and well-resourced, highly-skilled regulator. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has responsibility for a significant body of work. In recent years as GDPR and protection of personal data have moved into mainstream public consciousness, the DPC has seen its workload increase in all areas of the organisation.
Some 85% of the fines issued across Europe last year, including the EU, EEA, and UK, were issued by the DPC on foot of detailed and comprehensive investigations.
This underlines both the DPC’s significant role, and positive record of effective and robust data regulation.
The Government values the DPC’s important and independent role as one of the largest EU data protection authorities and acknowledges its strong track record in carrying out its duties”.
The Government has ensured that the DPC is resourced to carry out its critical and independent role. The Commission received an allocation of €28.1m under Budget 2024, an almost eightfold increase on its previous 2015 allocation of €3.6m.
Minister McEntee also paid tribute to outgoing Data Protection Commissioner Ms Helen Dixon, whose tenure comes to an end on February 19th, 2024, after almost a decade in the post.
Minister McEntee said: “I would like to thank Ms Dixon for the dedication, strength and vision she has shown throughout her time as Data Protection Commissioner.
Under her stewardship, the Data Protection Commission’s size and remit has expanded significantly and is currently staffed with some 222 employees.
Ms Dixon has led the organisation through this expansion and navigated an evolving data protection landscape, following the enactment of the General Data protection Regulation (GDPR) in May 2018.

The vacancy for the third DPC Commissioner will be filled, through a new Public Appointments Service competition, as soon as possible.
Child benefit payments will be extended to include 18-year-olds, latter who remain in full-time education, with effect from May 1st next.
Ms Heather Humphreys (Minister for Social Protection) is expected to bring this proposal to Cabinet this morning.
This measure, which will also apply to children with a disability, was previously announced in Budget 2024, but was scheduled to begin from next September.
Ms Humphreys is expected to now inform the Cabinet today that the Department is in a position to implement this measure with effect from May 1st, next.
She will use social welfare legislation; same due before the Seanad this week, to implement this change.
The new policy change was initially designed as a cost-of-living measure.
Minister for Justice Mrs Heleen McEntee has welcomed the news that over 6,300 people have applied to join An Garda Síochána force, under the most recent recruitment campaign.
According to statistics released today, by An Garda Síochána, they received 6381 applications in their recruitment competition, which closed last Friday (February 8th, 2024).
Welcoming the news this morning, Minister McEntee stated, “The response to the latest Garda recruitment campaign has been very strong. I am delighted to see over 6,300 apply to become Gardaí – this is a significant increase on the 5,000 people who applied last year.
I am glad to see that so many people want to join An Garda Siochana and I am particularly pleased at the strong response from people aged between 35 and 50. Well over a third of the applications were in that age group.
I have always said that nothing is off the table when it comes to recruitment. We have increased the training allowance and increased the age of entry from 35 to 50. I am determined that An Garda Síochána grows to 15,000 members and beyond.
So to all those who have applied, good luck with the interviews and assessments, and all the very best on your path to a job well worth doing”.
This competition comes only ten months since the last Garda recruitment campaign, which attracted approximately 5,000 applications.
Minister McEntee is committed to ensuring that An Garda Síochána has the resources it needs to fight crime. An Garda Síochána have been allocated a budget of €2.35 billion to An Garda Síochána, a 25% increase since 2020. This funding will continue to allow for the continued recruitment of Garda members and staff this year, as well as ensuring Gardaí have the equipment, technology, facilities and fleet they need to carry out their vital work.
It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, today Monday 12th February 2024, of Mr Lawrence (Larry) Dowling, Caherdavin, Co. Limerick and formerly of Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
Late of Teagasc and pre-deceased by his wife Therese, his son Larry (Jnr) and brother Bill; Mr Dowling passed away peacefully at Cratloe Nursing Home, Cratloe, Co. Clare.
His passing is most deeply regretted and sadly missed by his children Mary, Con, Paul and Oonagh, Sarah and her husband Patrick, Hugh, Stephen, Alex, Abi and Anna, son-in-law Robert, daughter-in-law Jane, Paul’s partner, Leslie, sister-in-law Phyllis Kilbride, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, extended relatives, neighbours and friends.

The earthly remains of Mr Dowling will be received into the Church of Christ the King, Caherdavin, Limerick, on Wednesday next, February 14th, to repose for Requiem Mass at 12:00 noon, followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in Crecora Cemetery, Glebe, Co. Limerick.
