How many people in Thurles can remember this house?
The photographer, Jill Forrest, was the wife of well-known artist/book illustrator Donald Forrest, both of whom hailed from Hastings, Sussex, on England’s south-east coast.
The Forrest family were previously owners of Farney Castle, close to Holycross, in Co Tipperary and at least one of their daughters was educated for a time, here in Thurles, by the Ursuline Convent.
The above rare picture of this quaint Thurles thatched building, was once the property of the McCormack family.
Those who can still remember the building, will also remember the delightful displays, set in drills, of Dahlias and the tall colourful supported stalks of trumpet-shaped blooms, known as Gladioli, (latter meaning ‘Sword’ in Latin). Same flowers were then easily visible on the left side of the above dwelling.
Alas, the building is no longer to be seen; demolished by the IDA, to accommodate the short lived medical goods manufacturing plant, known as Jobst Ireland Ltd, once situated in the Archerstown Industrial Estate, here in Thurles.

Note: Children attending must have a parent or guardian present. Children attending alone will not be vaccinated.
In Northern Ireland, a further 2,235 cases of coronavirus were reported today, up from 1,865 on yesterday.
Today, there are 443 patients with Covid-19 in northern hospitals and of these, 12 patients are in their hospital intensive care units, an increase of 3 on Friday’s reported figures.
Sadly, 4 more Covid-19-related deaths have also been reported in Northern Ireland today and a further Covid-19 booster vaccine is to be offered to all those aged 75 and over.
A man has, sadly, lost his life following a house fire in Co Tipperary, which is believed to have broken out sometime before noon today.
Units from Thurles fire Brigade were summoned by a passer-by, to the scene of the fire, which began in a bungalow near the village of Ballingarry (South Riding), Thurles, Co Tipperary.
When the house was examined by fire crew; the fire having been quickly extinguished, the body of a man was discovered inside, believed to be aged in his 40s. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The scene has since been preserved by Gardaí and a forensic examination of the house will now be carried out by members of the Garda Technical Bureau, to determine the actual cause of the fire.
The body of the man was removed to South Tipperary General Hospital before being moved to Waterford University Hospital, where a postmortem will take place.
Enquiries remain ongoing; however it is not believed that there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding the fatal blaze or the mans death at this time.
