Death Of Catherine Sullivan, Formerly Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, on Sunday, January 19th, 2025, of Mrs Catherine (Delaney) Sullivan, of Wayne, Pennsylvania USA and formerly of Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland.

Pre-deceased by her parents John and Catherine (McCarthy) Delaney, brother Sean Delaney and sisters Breeda Delaney and Josephine Kelly; Mrs Sullivan (born on August 24th, 1934 the eldest of five children and a graduate of the Presentation Convent School in Thurles), passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, following a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Her passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sorrowing family; husband Tom; her children Catherine Sullivan McLaughlin (husband John) of Newtown Square, PA, and Michael R. Sullivan (wife Amy) of Old Greenwich, CT; six grandchildren, Matthew J. Sullivan, Abigail M. Sullivan, Catherine M. (Thomas) Trankle, Elizabeth C. McLaughlin, John T. McLaughlin, and Clare A. McLaughlin.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mrs Sullivan will repose at Holy Saviour Church, 407 E. Main Street, Norristown, PA 19041, on Wednesday, January 29th 2025, from 9:00am until 10:00am.
A traditional Latin Requiem Mass will follow at 10:00am, followed by cremation.

A poem “The Drawer” by that great extoller of ‘words with rich rural feeling’, Seamus O’Rourke.

Based in rural Ireland, Seamus has become widely known for his simple storytelling, which captures rural Irish life in a way that both amuses and affects the reader and listener.

In September 2024, Seamus released his much anticipated sequel to his popular first memoir, Standing in Gaps.

Thurles Town To Take Part In 100 Million Tree’s Initiative.

Tomorrow, Monday January 27th, the planting of 2500 trees will take place on the Mill Road, southeast of Thurles Town (Eircode E41 NP02), same sponsored by Allied Irish Bank as part of the 100 Million Tree’s Initiative.

The public are welcome to attend at 10:00am, with schools; the local residents association and Refresh Thurles (Tidy Towns) being invited to volunteer to aid with the planting; on land held by Tipperary County Council and paid for by taxpayers.

100 Million Trees Project:

The 100 Million Trees Project is a national Not-for-Profit initiative being run by siblings, Richard, David and Tina Mulcahy.

The project aims to see the planting of 100 million native Irish trees across the island of Ireland over the next decade, as a community-driven initiative to reverse the immense environmental damage caused by the reduction of forests worldwide and the loss of huge areas of biodiversity.

The project’s ambitious aim will be achieved through densely planting between 500 and 2,500 native Irish trees at a time across small areas of land using ‘The Miyawaki method’.
Named after the Late Japanese Botanist, Professor Akira Miyawaki (1928-2021), who developed the technique in the 1970s as a means to restore degraded land, the Miyawaki Method of overplanting trees, has been successful in creating over 1,700 forests worldwide.

By planting excess trees together, these grow 10 times faster, 30 times denser, create an area 100 times more biodiverse and most importantly create a very rapid carbon sink. This inexpensive approach requires significantly smaller planting areas and can be carried out on unused or fallow land across Ireland. Dense areas of afforestation can also actually play a role in reducing the impact of forest fires, while at the same time provide excellent areas of biodiversity.
In 2022-2023 – 20,600 Irish native trees were planted in 6 counties on the island of Ireland.
In 2023-2024 – a further 201,750 Irish native trees were planted in 19 counties.
In 2024-2025 the target is to plant a further 550,000 trees in 28 counties.

This event is to be welcomed.

Meanwhile; sadly 3 mature trees lost their lives during Storm Éowyn last Thursday night – two trees in the immediate vicinity of Thurles Cemetery (One inside & one outside the entrance gates), and another mature tree which met its ‘Waterloo’ in the Drish River, latter situated on the Mill Road south of Thurles town.

Death Of Martin Duggan, Formerly, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, yesterday Saturday 25th January 2025, of Mr Martin Duggan, Cragg, Newport, Co. Tipperary, Meelick, Co. Clare, Kilkenny and formerly Borrisoleigh, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by his loving son Noel, parents Matthew and Mary, brother Matthew, and sisters Peggy and Kathleen; Mr Duggan (ex CIE and Bus Eireann employee), passed away peacefully at University Hospital Limerick (UHL), surrounded by his loving family.

His passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sorrowing family; Monica, sons Martin and Kenneth, daughters Angela, Dawn, Olivia and Caroline, grandchildren Michelle, Anthony, Noel, James, Mary, Joanne, Mollie, Dylan, Jack, Alana, Emelia, Thomas, Cathal, Shane, Lauren, Jess and Zara, brothers Mick, John and Donal, sister Mary, daughters-in-law Josie and Aileen, sons-in-law Brian, Mike, Gerald, and Ger, great grandchildren Eva, Paul, Sophie, Conor and Tadgh, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended relatives, neighbours and close friends.

The earthly remains of Mr Duggan will repose at Meehan’s Funeral Home, Newport, Co. Tipperary on Monday afternoon, January 27th, from 5:30pm until 7:30pm same evening.
His remains will be received into the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, Newport, on Tuesday morning January 28th to further repose for Requiem Mass at 11:30am, followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in Rockvale Cemetery Newport, Co. Tipperary.

Death Of Mary Keogh, Formerly Of Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, today Sunday 26th January 2025 of Mrs Mary Keogh (née Loughnane) late of Bulfin Crecent, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary and formerly of Littleton, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by her beloved husband Jerry, daughters Patricia and Sarah (Sheppard), her parents Michael and Johanna, brothers and sisters Margaret, Thomas, Michael, Johnny, Matthew, Theresa, Paddy, Josie and William and her son-in-law John (Sheppard); Mrs Keogh passed away peacefully, while in the care of staff at Rivervale Nursing Home, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.

Her passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sorrowing family; daughters Josie (Hayes) and Maureen (Daly), sister Eileen, sons-in-law Bawney and Gerry, her adored grandchildren Sean, Enda, Sinead, Karl, Kira, Thomas and Sean and her great-grandchildren Rory, Paige and Teddy, brother-in-law Paddy, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours and friends.

The earthly remains of Mrs Keogh will repose at Ryan’s Funeral Home, Nenagh (E45 KN93), on Tuesday afternoon, January 28th, from 5:30pm until 7:00pm, followed by removal to St. Mary of the Rosary Church, Church Road, Nenagh arriving at 7.30pm same evening.
Requiem Mass for Mrs Keogh will be celebrated on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in Lisboney Cemetery, Lisbunny, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.
