Changes To Thurles Skyline Following Storm Éowyn.

At least 15,000 Tipperary homes and business premises are without electric power this morning, with many reports of fallen trees and strewn branch debris, following the extreme winds courtesy of Storm Éowyn.

Here in Thurles town council workers will have a few extra jobs to undertake today, as our pictures hereunder now demonstrate.

Met Eireann has, this morning, downgraded the Red Level severe weather wind alert to Level Orange for all of Co. Tipperary; same valid from 7:00am today Friday January 24th until at least midday.

Death Of Paddy Maher, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, today Thursday 23rd January 2025, of Mr Patrick (Paddy) Maher, Boulabeha, Moyne, Thurles, Co. Tipperary and formerly Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by his parents Jack and Molly and brother John: Mr Maher passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, while in the care of staff at Unit C, Community Hospital of the Assumption, Castlemeadows, Gortataggart, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

His passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sorrowing family; brothers Tom, Dinny, Martin and Gerard, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, sisters-in-law, cousins, extended relatives, great neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mr Maher will repose at Hugh Ryan’s Funeral Home, Slievenamon Road, Thurles, on Saturday afternoon, January 25th from 4:00pm until 6:00pm, before being received into the Church of St Mary, Moyne, Templetuohy, Thurles at 6:45pm same evening.
Requiem Mass for Mr Maher will be celebrated on Sunday afternoon, January 26th at 12:30pm, followed by interment, immediately afterwards in St Mary’s cemetery, Moyne, Templetuohy Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

The extended Maher family wish to express their appreciation for your understanding at this difficult time, and have made arrangements for those persons wishing to send messages of condolence, to use the link shown HERE.

Tipperary Co. Council Announce Extra TeL. No. For Tonight’s Weather Event.

Members of the public can contact Tipperary Co. Council Customer Service Desk on 0818 06 5000/6000 or a dedicated Severe Weather contact Number at 0818 06 5001 during Friday 24th January from 9.00am to 10.00pm and on Saturday 25th January from 9.00am to 1.00pm, after which calls will be transferred to the Council’s Out-of-hours contact number 0818 06 5003. Members of the public can also email customerservices@tipperarycoco.ie to report their concerns.

Members of the public are reminded to register (free) on MapAlerter, a public emergency notification system available on the Council’s Website, where they can receive additional useful information by text and e-mail.

The extremely strong winds are expected to cause fallen trees, power lines, damage to property, flying debris, and road blockages making driving conditions dangerous.

Council road crews will not be in a position to respond to call-outs from midnight tonight, until the end of the Red Warning at 11:00am on Friday. Members of the public using the roads during this period could potentially find themselves very isolated should they get into difficulty. The Fire Services will only be in a position to respond to emergency calls that are deemed to be life critical.

Note: Council Offices and services including libraries, swimming pools and civic amenity sites will be closed to the public on Friday January 24th. Civic Amenity sites will reopen again on Saturday 25th January.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, on Friday 13th December 2024, of Sr. De Paul Mary Maher, Convent of Mercy, Beaumount House, Derby, England and formerly of Gragaugh, Ballingarry (SR), Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by her parents, brothers Ned and Paddy, sisters Nancy, Kitty, Joan and Nellie; the passing of Sr. De Paul is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sorrowing family; brother Tom (Killenaule), sisters-in-law Susan and Mairead, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, neighbours, friends and her Sisters of Mercy Community.

Requiem Mass for Sr. De Paul was already celebrated on Friday, January 10th 2025, at the Cathedral of St Mary and St Helen, Ingrave Rd, Brentwood, United Kingdom (CM15 8AT) and was followed by interment in Woodman Road Cemetery, 39A Woodman Rd, Warley, Brentwood, United Kingdom (CM14 5AU).

A Memorial Mass will be offered for Sr. De Paul, in the Church of the Assumption, Ballingarry (SR), Thurles on Saturday evening, January 25th 2025, at 7:00pm.
