Thurles Cathedral “Raise The Roof” Fundraiser.

Anyone who is familiar with the town of Thurles, in Co. Tipperary, is most certainly acquainted with the historic Cathedral of the Assumption, latter modelled on the Cathedral at Pisa in Northern Italy.

The building was commenced by Dr. Patrick Leahy who was then Archbishop of Cashel & Emly, and who decided to replace the existing “Big Chapel” with a Cathedral, and ever since this landmark building has played a central role in the faith life of our Thurles parish community.

The foundation stone was laid in 1865, it was roofed by 1870 and consecrated by Thomas William Croke D.D. Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, on 22nd June 1879, (142 years ago). Maintenance is constant in old buildings with repair needed on an ongoing basis. The 1970’s saw the roof re-slated, but now the time has come to replace the roofing and return it to its original Bangor slate form.

As stated, this majestic building as it stands today, has been at the very heart of our Thurles Community for some 142 years. Built in an Italianate Romanesque style, the Cathedral has always been admired for the sheer beauty of its architecture. Every inch of this structure is steeped in a rich history that reveals fascinating national and global connections.

For those of us living locally, the Cathedral holds an even more personal and profound place of importance in our hearts and minds. For many of us it is where we have celebrated some of the best of times. It is also the place that has supported us through some of the worst of times.

It is a site of worship and a venue where the community comes together daily through prayer, song, empathy and friendship. Indeed, it would be difficult to find someone from Thurles who hasn’t drawn comfort at least once from its surroundings or taken part in a celebration within its hallowed walls.

Now, in 2021, a building that has served and supported so many of us down through the years, badly needs our help with the roof of this Cathedral now in need of urgent restoration.

To this end, the Cathedral Reroofing Project Group are delighted to announce the launch of the Thurles Cathedral “Raise The Roof” Lotto, a fundraising initiative that is hoped will be of great benefit, as part of efforts to fund the much needed re-roofing of the Cathedral of the Assumption. It is hoped that the weekly option of €2 per line, will allow everybody to take part and support.

The last major renovation of the Cathedral took place 20 years ago. In the intervening years, repair works were completed on the Bell Tower and the statues surrounding the roof perimeter. A new roof will complete this total refurbishment in the modern era and ensure that the Cathedral will remain a centre of celebration, consolation and worship for the parish and the Archdiocese.

Death Of Mike O’Donoghue, Formerly Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, yesterday Sunday 30th May 2021, of Mr Michael (Mike) O’Donoghue, Carthunagrawn, Corofin, and No.2 Church Street, Corofin Co. Clare and formerly Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Mr O’Donoghue passed away peacefully while in the care of the staff at the Lakes Nursing Home, Killaloe, Co. Clare.

His passing is most deeply regretted by his sisters Anne, Theresa, Kathleen and Brigid, brothers-in-law James Moylan, Brendan Kerins, Brendan Flanagan, P.J. Fogarty, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mr O’Donoghue will repose for Requiem Mass at St. Brigid’s Church, Newtown, Corofin, Co. Clare on Wednesday morning, June 2nd, at 11:00am, followed immediately afterwards by interment in Kilnaboy Cemetery, Coad, Co. Clare.

For the many persons who would have liked to have attended the funeral service for Mr O’Donoghue, but are unable to do so, due to current coronavirus pandemic restrictions; same can be viewed online HERE.

Death Of Tom Nesbitt, Loughmore, Tipperary.

It was with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, on Saturday 29th May 2021, of Mr Thomas (Tom) Nesbitt, Clontarf, Dublin 3 and formerly of Loughmore, Co. Tipperary.

Predeceased by his brothers Jim, Martin, Paddy and Mike; Mr Nesbitt passed away peacefully while in the care of staff at St. Gabriel’s Nursing Home.

His passing is most deeply regretted by his devoted wife and soul mate Beatrice, sons Thomas, Gerry, and Paul, daughter Sheila, son-in-law Stephen, daughter-in-laws Trish, Karan and Maria, grandchildren Laura, Jamie, Mark, Hannah, Sophia, Alison, Eva, Olivia, Aaron, Muireann, Shona and Sean, brothers Gerard and John Joe, sisters-in-law Kathleen and Mamie, extended relatives, neighbours and friends.

Covid-19 Updates: Mon. 31st May 2021 – 378 New Virus Cases

Provisional data indicates that more than 30 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in North Tipperary in the two week period between the 16th and 30th of May 2021.

The Department of Health this evening has confirmed there have been 378 new additional virus cases reported here within the Irish Republic; with same case numbers subject to future data validation.

There are 99 people with Covid-19 remaining in hospital today in the Republic of Ireland, and of that number 35 are in ICU’s.

A primary school in Co, Limerick (latter county bordering on the west side of Co. Tipperary) has been forced to shut after multiple children tested positive for Covid-19. Every pupil in the school has been designated as a close contact and each student will now have to be tested.

The Minister for Health Mr Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that the vaccine registration portal will open for people aged 40 to 44 from Wednesday next, June 2nd; with 43 year olds able to register on Thursday, those aged 42 on Friday, 41 on Saturday and 40 year olds on Sunday.

The total worldwide number of virus cases identified up to 5.00pm this evening, now stands at almost 170.43 million confirmed cases, with global deaths at well over 3.54 million.

Meanwhile, the Rose of Tralee Festival has been cancelled for the second year in a row, due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Death Of Mary Cummins, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with the deepest personal sadness and regret that I learned of the death, yesterday Sunday 30th May 2021, of Mrs Mary Cummins (née Boilson), Grawn, Two-Mile-Borris, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

A gentle lady who brought great joy to the lives of those whose path she crossed; Mrs Cummins was pre-deceased by her husband Paddy, her son Patrick and her great-grandson Patrick.

Her passing is most deeply regretted by her loving sons Thomas, Martin, Jimmy and Billy, daughters Marie, Margaret, Angela, Catherine and Anne, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers Willie and Paul, sisters Kitty and Anne, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

The funeral cortege, bearing the earthly remains of Mrs Cummins will leave her residence on Wednesday morning, June 2nd, to be received into the Church of St. James, Two-Mile-Borris, Thurles, at 11:00am, to repose for Requiem Mass at 11:30am.
Interment will follow immediately afterwards in Two-Mile-Borris Cemetery, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
