Covid-19 Updates: Wed. 2nd June 2021 – 407 New Virus Cases.

The Department of Health this evening has confirmed there have been 407 new additional virus cases reported here within the Irish Republic; with same case numbers subject to future data validation.

There are 93 people with Covid-19 remaining in hospital today in the Republic of Ireland, and of that number 34 are in ICU’s.

There has been a significant increase in infections among young adults aged between 19-24 over the last two weeks.

Some 84 new Covid-19 virus cases were recorded in Northern Ireland during the past 24 hours

Meanwhile, Pharmacies will begin playing a role in the vaccination process from early this month, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has informed the Seanad; with over 1,000 pharmacies having already applied to be involved in the scheme.

The total worldwide number of virus cases identified up to 5.00pm this evening, now stands at over 171.27 million confirmed cases, with global deaths at well over 3.56 million.

‘Flubot’ – New Text Scam In Circulation.

Vodafone are warning Irish customers of a dangerous new sophisticated scam text, which has begun circulating called ‘Flubot’.

Currently this scam only affects Android users, however it is believed that same could also soon affect Apple users.

This Flubot SMS (short message service), is now circulating in Ireland and customers are being asked to take the following actions should they receive same SMS from a company they do not recognise, regarding the tracking of a package.

(1) IGNORE: Do not click on any link included in the message.

(2) DELETE: Remove the full SMS from your phone immediately.

While the scam will primarily affect Android users, Vodafone encourage users of all handsets to be cautious when receiving such any SMS, particularly when you are not expecting a delivery or a contact from a courier.

The National Cyber Security Centre have expanded on these new tactics being employed by fraudsters.
Quote, “Such messages typically contain a link for the victim to click on to get details of a missed package delivery. This link will direct the victim to a fake website replicating the legitimate delivery company’s site. The victim will then be asked to download two .apk files which are banking trojans. Users will then be prompted to manually override and allow an untrusted app download.”

[Trojan: A trojan, is a type of malicious code or software that looks legitimate is designed to damage, disrupt, steal, or in general inflict harmful action on your data or network.]

[APK file: An APK file is an app created for Android, Google’s mobile operating system. Some apps come pre-installed on Android devices, while other apps can be downloaded from Google Play.]

We are aware here in Thurles of individuals receiving similar type SMS messages as shown hereunder.

This warning comes as Gardaí continuously warn the public to be alert for any suspicious texts, scam calls or information forms received online.

Death Of John O’Connell, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, yesterday Monday 31st May 2021, of Mr John O’Connell, Knockabritta, Killenaule, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Mr O’Connell passed away peacefully, while in the care of staff at South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

His passing is most deeply regretted by his loving wife Mai, sons Gerard and Tadhg, daughter Maria, cherished grandchildren Caitlin, Réiltín, Michael and Darragh, son-in-law Donie (O’ Neill) and daughter-in-law Lizzie (Munnelly), brothers Michael, Eugene, Pat, Richard, Jim and Donal, sisters Rena and Marion, uncles Paddy (Berkery), Donal and Ambrose, his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, godson, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Requiescat in Pace.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mr O’Connell will repose in St. Mary’s Church, Bailey Street, Killenaule, Thurles, for Requiem Mass at 11:30am on Thursday morning, June 3rd.

For the many persons who would have liked to have attended the funeral service for Mr O’Connell, but are unable to do so, due to current coronavirus pandemic restrictions; same can be viewed online HERE.

Covid-19 Updates: Tue. 1st June 2021 – 337 New Virus Cases.

The Department of Health this evening has confirmed there have been 337 new additional virus cases reported here within the Irish Republic; with same case numbers subject to future data validation.

There are 89 people with Covid-19 remaining in hospital today in the Republic of Ireland, and of that number 34 are in ICU’s.

Some 54 new cases of Covid-19 vices were recorded in Northern Ireland during the past 24 hours

The Irish Minister for Health Mr Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that the vaccine registration portal will open for people aged 40 to 44 from tomorrow, Wednesday June 2nd; with 43 year olds permitted to register on Thursday, those aged 42 on Friday, 41 on Saturday and 40 year olds on Sunday.

We understand that over one million Covid vaccine doses were administered in May, taking the total number administered so far to 2.7 million.

The total worldwide number of virus cases identified up to 5.30pm this evening, now stands at over 170.80 million confirmed cases, with global deaths at well over 3.55 million.

New Improved Environmental Protection Agency Website

The EPA’s new website provides targeted, timely, trusted information on Ireland’s environment.

Environment & You section highlights the key actions that can be taken by the people of Ireland to protect our environment. Key areas covered are waste, drinking water, radon, air quality and climate change.

In the lead up to World Environment Day on June 5th next, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched its new website www.epa.ie. Providing accurate and trusted information, this new website makes it easier for people to become more involved in protecting our environment.

According to recent surveys on Irish people’s attitudes to the environment, 57% of people in Ireland are extremely worried about environmental issues and 80% of Irish people reported taking action to help the environment. Responding to this, the new Environment & You section features practical advice on what actions you can take in your home or in your community on areas such as waste, drinking water, radon, air quality and climate change.

Commenting on the launch, EPA Director General Ms Laura Burke said:

“The upcoming World Environment Day offers us all an opportunity to reflect on our impact on the environment. The EPA’s new Environment & You section is designed to highlight key actions that we can all take to become more eco-friendly and provides easy-to-read information on key environmental issues.

The development of a new EPA website was a strategic priority for the EPA. The aim is to provide accessible information and enable people to make informed choices for themselves, their families, their communities and their businesses.”

This new website is mobile-friendly and designed to provide high quality, targeted and timely environmental data, plus assessments and evidence to inform decision-making by citizens, businesses and Government. In this way the EPA continues to engage the public in the protection and improvement of the environment.
