The Department of Health has confirmed 984 new cases of Covid-19, in the Republic of Ireland within the past 24 hours.
There are 343 people in hospital with the disease, down six on yesterday’s numbers, with 70 of these being treated in intensive care units, up five from yesterday.
Prof Philip Nolan (NPHET) has stated that the population seems to have come close to suppressing Covid-19 and we are in a good place in relation to lifting the remaining restrictions currently in place by October 22th next.
In Northern Ireland, a further 1,339 cases of the virus were confirmed by their Department of Health, in the last 24 hours; up from 1,209 cases on yesterday’s reported figures.
The latest hospital figures show there were 362 patients with Covid-19 in hospitals in Northern Ireland today, up from 346 reported yesterday, with 31 of these in intensive care.
Meanwhile, in Russia, sadly more than 900 daily coronavirus deaths have been reported for the first time, as the country struggles with stubbornly high infection rates, driven by the Delta variant and low vaccination take-up.

The Department of Health has confirmed 1,124 new cases of Covid-19 here in the Irish Republic over the past 24 hours.
There are 349 people in hospital with the virus, up 16 from yesterday and of these, 65 patients are in intensive care, up 1 on yesterdays reported figures.
In Northern Ireland today, a further 1,209 new cases of the virus were reported by their Department of Health.
This morning, there were 346 patients with Covid-19 in northern hospitals, with 34 of these in intensive care.
Sadly, a further 3 deaths have occurred, of people who had tested positive for Covid-19.
Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson has said it had submitted data to the US Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorisation of a booster shot of its vaccine for people aged 18 years and older.
It has now been accepted, following research analysis, that vaccination with two doses of the Pfizer jab stays highly effective against severe Covid, including the Delta variant, for at least six months.

The River Suir walkway here in Thurles will be closed to all pedestrians; starting from the “Swinging Gates” at the junction of Thomond Road and Emmet Street, through to the junction of Slievenamon Road and Clongour Road.
Same comes into effect from 7:00am on tomorrow morning, Tuesday October 5th to 7:00pm on Tuesday October 19th 2021.
The closure is required to facilitate resurfacing work, which has greatly angered local residents and those who over the years had freely volunteered, offered their servives to keep the area clean of litter, beer cans, wine bottles and syringes.
Sadly, none of the aforementioned volunteers were consulted about the resurfacing work and feel that the funding acquired should have been better spent on the river itself, now an embarrassing, foul-smelling eyesore, rather than spent on widening the existing walkway with tarmac.
Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are down since 4:00pm this evening, with the three platforms confirming on Twitter that they are aware of certain issues and are working hard in an attempt to resolve them.
Facebook have tweeted: “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience.”
Vodafone Ireland here in Tipperary was also down, and tweeted that it was experiencing technical issues and claiming, quote, “There is currently a global outage across several social media platforms. This is impacting our data network performance. We will continue to post updates as they become available. — Vodafone Ireland (@VodafoneIreland) October 4, 2021.
Vodafone has since corrected its issues, but downloads remains sluggish.
We understand that Facebook engineers have been sent to the company’s U.S. data centres to try and fix the problem, which means this outage, could be prolonged for sometime.

Today is the first day that the updated daily Covid case figure within the Republic of Ireland have dropped below 1,000, since July 15th last.
In Northern Ireland, a further 1,080 cases of coronavirus were reported today, up from 892 reported just yesterday.
There were 338 patients with the virus in northern hospitals today, down from 342 reported on Friday.
Some 37 people were being treated in northern hospital intensive care units, up from 33 reported on Friday last.
Sadly also, 3 more coronavirus-related deaths have also been reported today.
