North Tipperary’s very necessary water-mains conservation project currently being undertaken here in Thurles presently, is progressing with military-like precision as our high definition “Time Lapse,” video demonstrates. As you can observe there can be no accusations of men leaning on shovels staring into holes expressed here. Well done to the professional team of workers involved.
(A special thanks to Daniel & Dwans Hardware, Cathedral Street, Thurles, for sharing their daytime HD security footage with us.)
Water Shut Off Notification For Kickham Street
David Walsh Civil Engineering Ltd, the company contracted by North Tipperary County Council to lay this new water-main, together with associated connections here in Thurles town, have proposed a time and date of a water shut off that may affect your home or business premises.
Shut down of water the supply on Kickham Street is set for Tuesday afternoon on October 1st next beginning at 2:00pm.
This shut off should not be in place for any more than six hours and will be kept to a bare minimum. Patience and understanding therefore, for this necessary maintenance work, is very much appreciated by the company involved. So remember to fill up the kettle, bucket, bottle etc to ensure your private supply is maintained during this period specified.
Remember the tank in your attic will possibly be sufficient to meet your afternoon needs, but a little extra stored will ensure there is enough for cooking the bacon and cabbage, provided of course you stay away from the washing machine and the shower or bath,
All other additional information can be obtained from the company by contacting Tel: 059-9144448 or Mobile: 087-6918071.
Mother Nature badly let us down this year, well her and that interfering busybody and Chairman of the Road Safety Authority, Gay Byrne.
As a well respected Tipperary councillor, I feel it is my duty to remind you all that earlier this month Gay Byrne, accused the Government and in particular the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter, of having little or no interest in road safety. Mr Byrne said that the lack of emphasis on road safety by the Government in general had him downcast and completely depressed. He also said he believed that Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has about as much interest in road safety as Gay himself did in snipe shooting. Byrne said: “Last year was the most successful year in terms of fatalities but it looks like now, steadily before our eyes, all the gains we’ve made in the last six or seven years are being lost.”
Now Gay, while you might be the most famous of broadcasters in Irish history and have had more influence on changing life in this county, than certainly any of our Tipperary political leaders, road safety issues in this area are something you do not want to be getting involved in.
Understand Gay, due to those 15 days of dry weather back last July, Mother Nature, as she is normally wont to do, failed us miserably in hiding completely all our road signs from the public gaze this year. You must be familiar with the Shakespearian phrase “Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t.” You see Gay if we were to make our road signs available to the public’s gaze; the next thing that would happen is an influx of those nosey tourists sniffing around.
Here in Thurles, thanks be to God, due to no proper Tourism funding, poor marketing and North Tipperary Tourism Company Ltd (NTTCL), we never have to worry about tourists, and it helps when we as councillors also do our bit in making it difficult to drive around, through the use of concealed and confusing road signs. You can see from one directional sign in our video above, we cut one kilometre out of the centre of North Tipperary County Councils measuring tape, in the hope that the extra 1km would prove just 1km to far for outsiders.
North Tipperary Tourism Company Ltd are helping also by printing a new brochure again this year. No one has told them about the Internet yet and they haven’t worked out that if no visitors actually come to Thurles, there is no one to pick up their poor quality publication. Certainly tour operators at junket trade shows are not interested in our humble offerings of Thurles “Home of Erin Foods,” latter which closed down some seven years ago. Ah yes we here as councillors manage to successfully confuse most of the more daring of our would be world wayfarers, by pretending we still have a factory called Erin Foods left in the town. I personally believe if its Bisto gravy, Oxo gravy or Campbell’s soup these people are looking for, let them find out the hard way, before moving on elsewhere, hopefully never to return.
Yes there are some misguided, easily led individuals who have been fooled into placing adverts on the Internet, but ask yourself Gay, without laughing, if you were looking for a good bed & breakfast near Thurles on the Internet, would you type into Google’s search engine the words “Cantata2.” or Bed & Breakfasts Thurles, in the hope of finding one?
Thank God for Section 46 of the Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000, which gives the Irish government an excuse for failing to use a Slash Hook around our local road signs, all in the interest of wildlife Health & Safety, during the months from February to September. What further proof do we need, yes “you sure can fool all the people all of the time.”
Just a thought; has anyone read a manual recently, explaining the operational mechanics of a Slash Hook and is there a Health & Safety Course available I wonder?
P/S. I hope my party colleagues Noel Coonan & Allan Kelly don’t see this, as they Key Fob Out and skip home early on some Friday evening. No I don’t think they will, sure they haven’t been seen or certainly contributed anything to Thurles since they were both elected.

Children’s events begin from 2.00pm to 4.00pm with farm animals to see, creepy-crawlies to observe, together with talks and guided walks by local experts, not to mention a pottery wheel demonstration. Games and races include the traditional Egg & Spoon Race, Sack Races and 3-legged Races, plus plenty more for all of the family to enjoy.
There will also be a Children’s Fancy Dress Show, with the theme “Nature,” so a great turn out of human birds and animals are anticipated.
Donations for the Open Day will be gratefully received, particularly raffle prizes and items for auction. They do ask that items for auction are of good quality; no bric-a-brac please. These items can be left at the Cabragh Wetland Centre any morning, or Telephone 0504-43879 / 086-3179919 to arrange delivery.
This is also the perfect opportunity to understand a bit more about the Cabragh Wetlands Trust, its priorities, its plans for the future and its role both as a conservation body and as an important community development group. You may even be tempted to join their growing membership of experts and volunteers, as they do need your assistance in continuing their efforts in creating a greater awareness of conservation and the appreciation of our natural environment.
Two major upcoming sporting events have been announced for Tipperary over the months of August and September 2013 next.
Trip to Tipp Weekend
The first major event to take place is the “Trip to Tipp Weekend,” of Cycling in aid of the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI), working for people with sight loss and will take place on the 17th and 18th of August 2013.
Over the last 18 years, “The Trip to Tipp,” has grown into an established part of the Irish annual cycling calendar, attracting a significant number of cyclists throughout the country each year.
As on previous occasions there are a number of cycle routes on offer to suit all levels of cyclists, with all departing from the Anner Hotel here in Thurles, Co Tipperary.
Online registration is available for all Routes (1 to 4,) on their website
2013 Tipperary Women’s Mini Marathon
The second event is the now annual 2013 Tipperary Women’s Mini Marathon. (Last year’s event held in Thurles, show in HD slide show hereunder.)
North Tipperary Sports Partnership and South Tipperary Sports Partnership are delighted to announce that the 2013 Tipperary Women’s Mini Marathon will take place in Clonmel on Sunday 29th September at 11.00am.
Now in its fourth year this 10k Mini Marathon has grown from strength to strength since the inaugural event in Thurles in 2010.
Former International athlete and Olympian Catherina McKiernan recently launched the 2013 event with the Sports Coordinators Elaine Cullinan and Valerie Connolly of North Tipperary Sports Partnership and South Tipperary Sports Partnership and Marion Hughes, Tipperary Athletics County Board member. Catherina has become an ambassador for the Tipperary Women’s Mini Marathon and she stated that she was once again delighted to be associated with the event, as she has been since 2010 and that it was wonderful to see so many women out running and jogging in Tipperary.
Elaine Cullinan, Co-ordinator, North Tipperary Sports Partnership commented; “As always this event is open to female runners, walkers and joggers of all abilities and mobility. We had record numbers of 1246 women register for the event last year in Thurles and we would expect to see this grow again this year in Clonmel. Registration is once again both online and postal (details below) and this year we will continue to make a charitable donation of €200 to the largest group to register that are raising funds for a charitable cause. Check out Website for registration details and also details of your local Meet and Train or Fit 4 Life running group, where you can train for this event with others in a fun sociable and supportive environment.”
Valerie Connolly, Co-ordinator, South Tipperary Sports Partnership commented; “It is wonderful to be part of this Women in Sport initiative in Tipperary as it provides a great opportunity for women of all ages to get active and take part in a women’s only mini marathon. All finishers will receive a specially designed race medallion and goody bag. Spot prizes will also be distributed on the day. The event also provides a great opportunity for participants to raise funds for their own local charities. We hope that this year’s event will build on the success of the previous years.”
All participants will be chip timed so whether running or walking the 10k, you will get an accurate time and the event as always is AAI measured and certified.
Note: The 2013 Tipperary Mini Marathon is funded through the Irish Sports Council Women In Sport Programme, and the 2013 committee comprises North Tipperary Sports Partnership, South Tipperary Sports Partnership, Tipperary Athletics County Board, Clonmel AC, Clonmel Borough Council, Clonmel Gardai, South Tipperary Civil Defence and Tipp FM.
