Regular listeners to the radio station Tipp FM should note that the “Down your Way” programme, recorded last night in Thurles at The Monks Licensed Hostility will be broadcast tonight between the hours 7.00pm and 8.00pm. If you miss it tonight you can hear the repeat programme mid-day on Sunday next between 1.00pm and 2.00pm. This weekly specialist programme is recorded each week by popular local radio host Eamon O’Dwyer.
Tonight’s radio programme will as usual get intimate, while discussing the more positive aspects of what’s happening here in Thurles through chatting with individuals and featuring some the Premier Counties outstanding local musical talents.
Of course “The Monks” public house still remains one of Ireland’s original and traditional social meeting places here in Thurles and Tipperary, entertaining “Muintir na haíte.” (Translated from the Irish; “The people of the place”.) Click here to learn more about the history of this ancient tavern which first began trading just after the Great Famine period in Irish History, around 1860.
Note by 10.00 am, each morning, Radio TippFM has a massive 59% of Tipperary people as their audience or over 83,000 people tuned in to listen to their daily programmes each week. TippFM also broadcast live from Thurles Shopping Centre every Thursday from their Pod stand in the complex, broadcasting a great mix of talk and music, as well as offering plenty of exclusive competitions and great give-aways.
Meanwhile if you are around and about Thurles take note that the annual Azerbaijan Orphanages Benefit Night will be held here in The Monks, Thurles, tomorrow night (Friday21st of February) at 10.00pm and the organisers, Joe Brennan, Kevin Kelly and Kevin Callanan would greatly appreciate your support.
Tickets cost €5.00 and there will be numerous Spot Prizes and a Raffle for a Hamper.
Music will be provided courtesy of Kevin Callanan, Carley Maher, Dixie and Paul Byrne, and the Brady’s (Ric, Mac and Martin), so a great night can be expected by all who can attend.
Who knows if you read the history you might even get sight of the Monk himself or the Hound of Death.
Thurles Musical Societies Mr Noel Dundon Reports;
Normally at this time of the year the only run Thurles Musical Society would be worried about would be the five night run for their annual show. However, in 2014 expect events to be somewhat different – a fun different that is. Besides this expected and aforementioned hectic five night run of this year’s show, which this year features the Republic of Ireland Premiere of “Sister Act” the Musical,” the Thurles Society is also embarking upon a Fun Run and Walk on Sunday February 23rd, starting at 12:30pm at the Anner Hotel and finishing .. .. well in plenty of time for the Society’s opening night we anticipate.
Yeah, ‘Nuns on the Run,’ as this fun run and walk is being headlined, is a brand new departure for Thurles Musical Society and there will be a slight twist to the norms associated with such events. Fancy dress is a real option, possibility and probability and in all likelihood there will be a few ‘Habits’ donned to help bring a little bit of flair to this event.
The run will pass the Presentation Convent and the Cathedral of the Assumption en-route and anyone who feels like they need divine inspiration can feel free to drop in. (It won’t pass St Patrick’s Cemetery although a few individuals could well be headed there after this event.)
While guarantees of good weather can never be guaranteed, Thurles Musical Society can promise great fun and craic on the day. And for all those budding Usain Bolts type athletes out there, an open invitation is being extended to don the Lycra, throw on the runners and come along to join the fun.
No ‘Habit’ do I hear you say? Rubbish, become a Dominican Nun for the event by cutting a hole in an old white sheet.
Now, as for the show itself, huge progress is being made these weeks with everyone working really hard. There is a great buzz about at rehearsals and the cast and chorus are really enjoying the preparations. Rehearsals are running at the moment between the Anner Hotel and The Premier Hall, and Thurles Musical Society wish to thank, most sincerely, both these venues for their assistance and usual courtesy.

Minister & Labour Party Deputy Leader Joan Burton Hails Labour’s Strongest Ever Tipperary Team
The Tipperary Labour Party selected its ‘strongest ever team’ to represent Tipperary in contesting the local elections this coming May.
Social Protection Minister and Deputy Leader of the labour party, Joan Burton, was on hand to oversee proceedings in a packed hall in the Anner Hotel in Thurles on Friday evening last.
Local Minister Alan Kelly, MEP Phil Prendergast and Senator Denis Landy were also in attendance and for those who are of the belief that Irish youth are no longer interested in party politics, note just some of the attendee’s shown in our slide show hereunder.
While acknowledging it wouldn’t be easy, she urged candidates and canvassers to get out and ‘talk to people,’ as the Labour party are the party that have brought this country back from the brink.
For the Tipperary/Cashel electoral area, retired council worker, Mick Byrnes was selected. Mick, who narrowly missed out on a seat at the last local election, said he was confident he could go one better this time out. “I want to build on my experience as someone who spent many years working in the local authority, as a community activist and as someone who has always worked to try and improve my local community,” said Mick.
For the Clonmel area, Labour selected previous poll-topper and sitting councillor, Sean Lonergan. Sean, an enduring popular figure, said his ambition was to top the poll this time but acknowledged it would not be easy, “It will be tough but it is very enjoyable when you know you have helped someone or brought about a change to improve your community,” he said.
For the Fethard/Carrick-on-Suir area, Cllr Michael Cleere, co-opted to the council last year will be seeking to retain the seat while running alongside him will be local Labour activist Liam Hayes. Cllr Cleere said that he was enjoying the challenge of being a councillor and hoped to continue the efforts to work for the people of South Tipperary.
Liam Hayes, spoke about the proud past of the Labour party in Tipperary and said that if every candidate could get selected, Tipperary would have 10 councillors, a Minister, a Senator and an MEP. “The Labour party in Tipperary has never been stronger and we need to build on this strength,” he further stated
For the Nenagh electoral area, Labour selected four candidates, Fiona Bonfield from Newport, Nenagh-based councillors, Cllr Virginia O’Dowd and Cllr Lalor McGee while operation transformation’s Greg Starr completes the billing. Fiona Bonfield, said that despite being new to politics, she was confident she could represent her area on any new Tipperary local authority.
For the Thurles/Templemore electoral area, Cllr John Kennedy and Roscrea-based Shane Lee will be flying the Labour banner. Cllr Kennedy paid tribute to outgoing Thurles town councillor, John Kenehen who retired, while the very popular Shane Lee told the crowd that he believed Roscrea had suffered from the lack of a local labour council. “If elected, I intend to give the people of Roscrea a stronger voice so that we can tackle many of the problems we currently experience in Roscrea,” said Shane Lee.
As discussed on Tuesday last here on Thurles.Info, the recently formed Hidden Tipperary Tourism group held their monthly meeting at Farney Castle, latter situated close to Holycross village.
Like so many of Mid Tipperary’s wonderful tourist attractions, those of us residing within easy reach of such fabulous venues are often unaware of their true significance or content, choosing instead to visit them only when relatives and friends come to stay from overseas.
It is not because we do not wish to support such local historic and treasured venues, but rather we choose to ignore same because of our close proximity, knowing that we can gain easy access to them quickly at any time into the future. Perhaps now is the time to change this pattern, tendency, convention, routine, (Call it what you want), fashioned by localised Tipperary residents, because of this same local proximity issue and encourage residents of Mid-Tipperary and its environs to check out what is actually available on their own very doorstep.
Hidden Tipperary Chairperson Mr Tom Noone, has now placed this topic for further discussion on his agenda for the next tourism meeting on Tuesday, March 4th, at 11:00 am at the Cormackstown Heritage Centre.
US diplomat Dr Richard Nathan Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations since July 2003, is to receive the 2013 Tipperary International Peace Award. This award will be presented to Dr Haass by the Tipperary Peace Convention later this year.
Dr Haass recently chaired talks here in Northern Ireland on the issues of flags, parades and the legacy of northern Ireland troubles.
Although the talks broke down on New Year’s Eve without an agreement, it is acknowledged that considerable progress was achieved particularly on issues dealing with northern Ireland’s past.
In a statement, organisers of the award stated it had acknowledged “the great work undertaken by Dr Haass in the talks process, which has laid the foundations and created an environment for a more peaceful and prosperous future.”
Responding to news of his award, Dr Haass stated that he viewed the award as, quote; “a tribute to the many people across Northern Ireland who have done so much to promote genuine reconciliation.”
Dr Haass went on to say; “I have been fortunate to meet and work with numerous people dedicated to Northern Ireland’s future, and am gratified to be recognised alongside such individuals as Bill Clinton, George Mitchell, Mary and Martin McAleese, Robin Eames, and the others who have dedicated themselves to the cause of peace in Northern Ireland and beyond.”
Past recipients of this peace award include former South African president Nelson Mandela, Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof, wounded Pakistani school girl Malala Yousafzai and Afghan human rights activist, Dr Sima Samar.
