Thurles hosted the official launch of Fine Gael’s Tipperary local election campaign.
It was standing room only for the official launch of Fine Gael’s Tipperary local election campaign held at the Anner Hotel, here in Thurles on Friday night last.
With 23 candidates, the Fine Gael party is very confident that it has brought together the best possible team to represent Tipperary’s diverse communities. With the creation of the newly integrated Tipperary authority running alongside five municipal districts it is vital that a strong unified voice is heard in order that the council can continue to achieve its stated objectives.
Fine Gael, as a major partner in government, is best placed in creating synergies with Tipperary County Council by having as many elected representatives on the council, thereby creating a partnership that can only benefit Tipperary in both the short and long term.
The launch was held in conjunction with the Fine Gael Constituency Annual General Meeting (AGM) and was opened by Constituency Chairman Mr Michael Harty. Michael outlined the enormous amount of work and co-operation carried out by local party officers in ensuring the seamless transition from North and South Ridings and uniting them into a single authority. Special thanks was given to Lucy McCormack, Constituency Secretary for the trojan work undertaken by her personally in this process.
North Tipperary’s Mr Noel Conan TD addressed the local issues facing Tipperary such as infrastructure and unemployment and wished all of the candidates well in the forthcoming local elections. South Tipperary Minister Mr Tom Hayes TD spoke about national policy and the difficult decisions that have to be taken whether locally or nationally in safeguarding the new found stability and growth.
Mr Simon Harris, MEP candidate for Ireland South and representatives for both Mr Sean Kelly and M/s Deirdre Clune also addressed the meeting.
The night concluded with a sense of determination that no stone would be left unturned in the pursuit of representing the people of Tipperary.
Ciarán from the “Tipperary International Rose of Tralee Organising Committee,” reports:-
The Tipperary Rose of Tralee Centre is proud to invite you to nominate an entrant in this year’s Tipperary Rose of Tralee Selection.
The winning Rose will represent her family and friends and the whole of County Tipperary at the Regional Finals in June. This is a wonderful opportunity for a company / business and for the chosen Tipperary Rose herself to become a part of the 2014 International Rose of Tralee Festival.
Nominating an entrant is simple, it requires a nominal fee, but in return the entrant will carry the name of your company/business on her sash throughout the many events which will be held during the county selection. This is a great branding and image awareness opportunity for your company, especially during these difficult times.
Your company will also be featured in all Local Media, Press Releases, on all our Social Media sites, (including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, reaching out to thousands of people), and to be mentioned on the main Rose of Tralee web page, on the Show Night Program and you will be represented by ‘Your Rose,’ to the huge crowd of 300 people on the selection night here in Thurles.
Putting forward a young lady also entitles you to two VIP tickets to the 2014 Tipperary Rose Selection night (To be held in the Anner Hotel, Thurles, 4th April) a picture of your Rose and throughout the year we will be happy to facilitate the 2014 Tipperary Rose to attend an event your company may be hosting.
Note: To this end a free ‘Information Evening’ will be held this Sunday evening (Tomorrow 23/3/2014) at 5.00pm at the Anner Hotel here in Thurles – all are welcome – you can even bring a friend if you so wish – or even bring someone with you to join us up on stage.

Members of the Tipperary Diaspora who are unable to travel to Ireland to attend family funerals are set to benefit from a newly launched service providing internet broadcasts of Irish funeral services, to clients.
‘Funerals Live‘ is the brainchild of a Co Clare businessman Alan Foudy, latter who has announced plans to create up to 10 new jobs over the next 18 months, as his innovative service is rolled out.
“Wherever in the world our client may be, whether it is in Australia or the United States, this service provides them with a private web link to a live stream of a funeral service or the option of a video recording of the entire service, including the burial, and all within two hours of its conclusion,” explained Mr. Foudy.
He continued: “The idea behind this venture, the only service of its kind being offered anywhere in Ireland or the UK, arose after I was asked to make a DVD of a funeral service for relatives and friends of the deceased whose funeral they could not attend. The general feeling was that a live web-cast or a delayed broadcast of the service would be a better option rather than having to wait up to two weeks for a DVD to arrive by post.”
“With the approval of the relevant Parish Priest and family members, I provide live streamed footage and audio of funerals in the church and graveyard subject to the availability of broadband on location. The entire service can also be made available on-line, no more than 2 hours after the funeral service with prices for all services starting from €350. The web link is password protected, so as to ensure only people who you want to see it will see it.”
“Based on our initial work, we expect that the majority of clients we will be working on behalf of will include either family members or friends of the deceased who have not been able to travel to Ireland to attend a funeral. We also expect that the service will also be particularly useful to persons in hospitals or nursing homes who are unable to attend services,” Mr. Foudy concluded.
While their website was off line today, note, for the future, same should be up again shortly and visible at www.funeralslive.ie.

History of The Premier Ballroom Thurles, Co Tipperary.
The building of The Premier Ballroom was completed in May 1964 at a cost of £40,000. The handball alley, which was on the site at that time, had to be knocked down to make room for the building and part of the old dance hall (The Confraternity Hall latter once Thurles Jail) was incorporated into the new building e.g. the ladies toilets and the mineral bar. The main contractor was the late Mr Christy Foyle (Formally of Slievenamon Road, Thurles,). The plumbing was completed by the late Mr Tom Mason (Formally of Friar Street, Thurles,) and the electrical work was completed by the late Mr Joe O’Brien (formally of Cathedral Street, Thurles,).

Yesterday temperatures here in Thurles rose to just about 11°C, with a cold sharp breeze blowing down Liberty Square, here in the town. Despite these temperatures, almost one thousand people wrapped up well, turning out to view this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade here in the town centre.
Fabulous traditional Irish Music for the event was provided by the ‘Jim O’The Mills’ Band and if you haven’t already visited Jim O’The Mills licensed hostility here in Upperchurch, Co Tipperary – well let’s face it you haven’t really been to Ireland.
Possibly the highlight of the staged events for most children (all aged from nought to ninety, I might add) was the “Reptile Village,” Ireland’s only Reptile Zoo, on a one day trip, visiting from Demesne Road, Gowran, Co Kilkenny latter just across the border from Tipperary. While St Patrick is supposed to have gotten rid of all the snakes here in Ireland, we now know that he missed one, in this case a 20 ft Boa constrictor, shown in our quick picture video hereunder.
The 2014 Thurles Parade was opened, as is customary, by His Grace Archbishop Dermot Clifford, who this year must be congratulated, as he celebrates the 50th year of his priestly mission. Master of Ceremonies for the overall event was former Ursuline Teacher and Town Councillor Mrs Mai Quinn who introduced each of the Floats, as they passed the reviewing stand. Councillor Evelyn Nevin led this years ‘Judging Panel’ from the Reviewing Stand.
Singer Imelda May, Giovanni Trapattoni and several well know pirates were amongst some of the celebrities quietly in evidence, together with numerous schools and business establishments from within the town and from villages on the outer perimeters – to name but a few.
As our video shows Gardaí did arrest two Boru Stoves for loitering, otherwise the afternoon, crime-wise, was uneventful.
Thurles Camera Club members as usual were also out in force capturing images of this truly enjoyable and very colourful of local event.
All in all, despite the low temperatures, again a fantastic display this year and congrats must go to the organising committee and the weeks of hard work by all those who took part.
