Tipperary’s Shane Long Signs For Hull

shanelongTipperary native Shane Long has now put pen to paper, to sign a three-and-a-half-year deal which could cost Hull a reported £7million.
Long was in Humberside recently to undergo a medical and to further discuss the final terms of his transfer, that previously had collapsed in August 2013.

It is unlikely Long will figure in Hull’s weekend expected encounter with Norwich at Carrow Road.

“The pressure now is on me to produce and to follow up Steve Bruce’s confidence in me. I’m excited, it seems like a good opportunity for me, and I just want to get out there now and play football.” said the Tipperary man. “I hope its money well spent for the club and it’s up to me to prove myself by scoring goals and I hope to do that sooner rather than later.” he continued.

West Brom’s new boss Pepe Mel confirmed he had been made aware of Long’s expected departure, before his own appointment and stressed that the club were capable of surviving without him. West Brom on the other hand may yet discover that his move turns out plain suicidal for their club, with regard to remaining in the Premier League. Looking back Long’s move was practically confirmed when West Brom, having accepted Hull’s initial advances last August, had failed to open talks with an option to extend Long’s deal for an extra year.

Despite that Long had featured regularly this season with West Brom and it now appears that a desire to free up money for their new manager may have been the true reason for the Tipperary man’s eventual exit.

Shane will collect an estimated £8m in wages over the course of this proposed three-and-a-half-year contract, moving the 26-year-old attacker into the £45,000 a week wage bracket, together with bonuses.

Long will now join a large Irish contingent of other Irish senior internationals at the club such as; Robbie Brady, Stephen Quinn, David Meyler, Paul McShane and U-21 international Conor Henderson.

Has Hayes Hotel Thurles Been Thrown A Lifeline?

Hayes Hotel, Thurles, Co Tipperary

Hayes Hotel, Thurles, Co Tipperary

Thurles born and Tipperary left corner-forward ‘All Stars Hurler of the Year 2010,’ Mr Lar Corbett, International boxing star Mr Matthew Macklin and Thurles businessman Mr Kevin Coppinger are understood to be the current front runners interested in a take-over of the birthplace of the GAA, namely Hayes Hotel, Liberty Square in Thurles, Co Tipperary.

Amid calls from leading figures, including former GAA president and MEP Sean Kelly, for the premises to be purchased by the GAA, this historic hotel presently in receivership since last April, may now have been thrown a possible lifeline if a deal can be reached by vendor and interested purchasers.

Professional boxing champion Matthew Macklin, known as “The Tipperary Tornado,” though  himself not a Thurles native, has indeed strong roots close to the town through his mother who is a native of Holycross, latter a village just outside Thurles.  Matthew, a regular visitor to Ireland and an attendee at Tipperary sporting events, has himself in the past represented Tipperary in U-16 hurling, before choosing to concentrate on his sport of boxing.

In 2011, Lar launched Lar Corbett’s Bar at Coppinger’s Bar, 4 Parnell Street in Thurles and both businessmen more recently also have acquired the Park Avenue Hotel, converting same into a popular Italian restaurant, “Puccini’s,” situated on the corner of Friar Street and Mathew Avenue, in Thurles.

Corbett has previously travelled to New York to watch Macklin train and last December, Corbett and Coppinger were believed to be both present in Atlantic City when Macklin beat American Lamar Russ in a middleweight bout.

This local Thurles / Tipperary “Trioka” are understood to have confirmed that an interest in purchasing this historic Hayes Hotel has been privately expressed and is now a possibility, subject to a suitable deal being agreed and accepted.

St. Patrick’s College Ladies Footballers Clinch Title

The unbeaten St. Patrick’s College, Thurles Ladies Football Team was victorious once again on Tuesday night when they beat a resilient IT Tallaght side, to claim the Division 5 title in an exciting final.

The enthralling encounter took place under floodlights in Templetuohy, Thurles, Co Tipperary. The College side had to dig deep and battle hard in the second half to pull back an eight point deficit. Both sides were level at the end of ordinary time but St. Pat’s were well and truly the superior team in extra time.

Can We Suggest One Christmas Gift Produced In Tipperary?

What do you buy the man who has everything? Mr Sports Gift based in Nenagh, just now, maybe the perfect answer to that age old question. Thanks to Mr Sports Gift, Christmas Day, Father’s Day and Birthdays can no longer be a source of frustration for that lady looking for something very different and special for the man in her life.

SliotarBy using cutting edge, patented technology, Mr Sports Gift can personalise a sports ball in almost any imaginable way, creating a unique gift for any occasion. Mr Sports Gift can print a photograph, logo, family crest or an affectionate, humorous or congratulatory message, directly on to a Hurley, Sliotar, Rugby ball, Gaelic football, Soccer ball or a range of other sports items, for that personalised ‘one of a kind’ gift.

Launched in early May of this year by Mr Noel Cahill and his son Aidan, the new company is growing from strength to strength and has already moved from off the kitchen table, to a state of the art manufacturing unit in Nenagh.

Speaking to Thurles.Info this week Mr Sports Gift’s Managing Director Noel Cahill said “We’ve had a huge reaction to our product so far and we are trying to get to as many events as possible to market and gain the maximum exposure for our products. We have a weekly spot at the Nenagh Indoor Market and we also make regular visits to Thurles Shopping Centre as well as other locations around the country. The National Ploughing Championships, Tullamore Show and International Hurling Festival were particularly good for us and we were fortunate to be invited on to Ireland AM recently, for the “Boost my Business,” slot which was a fantastic experience.”

Here, having successfully pitched to an assessment panel, Noel secured a place on the TESS (Tipperary Enterprise Start-Up Support) Programme run by LIT Tipperary and based in the new Thurles Chamber Enterprise Centre. TESS is based on the highly successful LEAP and FAST programmes run by LIT over the past five years and participants on these types of incubation programme have much higher potential and greater success rates.

During the 12 month programme, which commenced in July 2012, TESS provided a range of integrated supports based around strategic planning, management training and business coaching. “All of these supports worked together to challenge and guide all of us into developing a sound business plan and building a sustainable and profitable business. I walked in with a couple of prototypes in a carrier bag and graduated with a real live business,”  Noel said.

Noel has been working in the business on a full time basis since  September 3rd 2012, having taken a career break from the Civil Service with over 17 years service, most recently as Press Officer for the Department of Social Protection. A former player and Secretary of Toomevara GAA club, Noel also played rugby with Nenagh Ormond and all of these connections are proving useful in establishing the new business.

While the majority of Mr Sports Gift customers so far have been female choosing gifts for men, extensive market research has identified other opportunities as Noel pointed out “Our research has thrown up a number of problems that we think Mr Sports Gift can solve including the difficulty of commemorating a sporting achievement outside of the usual trophies, medal and  plaques. There is also an issue finding new corporate gifts that are not already on the market. Diaries, pens and umbrellas have a limited attraction when you’ve got them more than once. We also believe that in the sliotar we have a uniquely Irish gift that is not already on the gift market and so there is worldwide potential.

With Christmas in mind Mr Sports Gift has introduced a number of new offerings including personalised Christmas ornaments, baby blocks and even pet balls so even our four legged friends don’t feel left out. Ordering is easy either through the online shop on the Website www.mrsportsgift.com or by Email to info@mrsportsgift.com. Just send the photographs and instructions and Mr Sports Gift will do the rest and get your personalised gift back to you in just a couple of days.

For customers in the Thurles area there is a selection of personalised balls on display in Lár na Páirce and Mr Sports Gift will be in Thurles Shopping Centre (Beside Tipp FM broadcast unit) on Friday 22nd and 29th November.
