Tipperary’s Drombane Village Renewal Scheme In Full Swing

“How often have I loitered o’er thy green,
Where humble happiness endeared each scene.
How often have I paused on every charm,
The sheltered cot, the cultivated farm,
The never-failing brook, the busy mill,
The decent church that topt the neighbouring hill,
The hawthorn bush, with seats beneath the shade,
For talking age and whispering lovers made!”

The Deserted Village” – By Oliver Goldsmith.

That world famous black-and-white photograph, featuring men having a lunch break atop a Skyscraper, (today known as the General Electric (GE) Building) taken by Charles Clyde Ebbets, during construction of part of the Rockefeller Center in New York City in 1932, has just been superseded.  This time however showing workers in the village of Drombane, Thurles Co Tipperary, during a 10:00am official tea break, courtesy of an idea by Drombane village native and Thurles resident, Mr Paddy Gleeson. (Latter named pictured here, wearing a white vest.)

The original photograph was taken on September 20th, 1932 on the 69th floor of the RCA Building and depicts eleven men eating lunch, while seated on a girder with their feet dangling some 840 feet above the New York City streets.  Like our photo above, the 1932 photo was also prearranged; staged by the Rockefeller Center in New York City to promote its then latest skyscraper, appearing in the Sunday photo supplement of the New York Herald Tribune on October 2nd 1932.

Our 2013 picture here shown above is also to highlight latest developments in the picturesque rural village of Drombane, which itself is currently undergoing an upgrade under a village enhancement scheme’ initiative, currently being undertaken by Drombane Village Group, a committee under the Chairmanship of Mr Con Harrington and Treasurer Martin Donoghue, and funded mainly by North Tipperary Leader Group.  Works currently nearing completion include a river board-walk and seating, river railings, a water wheel, tree planting and quite pedestrian walk way areas.

Having had the privilege of viewing current agreed plans for the village, I have to agree with Mr Gleeson’s predictions; “Future expected tourists and natives returning to this small rural village will have difficulty in recognising it and may even now decide to remain and attempt to re-grow their earlier roots, reversing the prophesy of Oliver Goldsmith, Quote; Trade’s proud empire hastes to swift decay, as ocean sweeps the labour’d mole away’.

So if you are out and about on the road from Thurles to Upperchurch, over the coming days, do take a short detour and examine the magnificent work currently being undertaken in rural picturesque Drombane village.

Surely, with apologies to Oliver Goldsmith; “Contented toil, and hospitable care, and kind connubial tenderness, are HERE.

Thurles Past & Present Photographic Exhibition

So How Good Is Your Memory?

Tom Noone Reports:

Exhibition With A Difference

An exhibition with a difference will be launched in Thurles on Thursday of next week. Originating from an idea by Tipperary Libraries and carried to fruition by Thurles Camera Club, the exhibition will show, in very graphic form, the changing face of our town over a 30-year period, pictured in almost 100 photographs.

The members of the Camera Club put together a selection of photographs representing a range of buildings, businesses and various scenes in the town during the early 80’s, and then photographed the same locations from the same aspect over the past few months. The results will provide a fascinating “Do you remember?” slice of nostalgia for townspeople, particularly for those young enough to have only hazy memories of the street-scape from that period.

Thurles Camera Club has been in existence for nearly 40 years and its members have gained wide recognition for the quality of their work over the years, so there is keen anticipation for this latest venture. Both the Club and Tipperary Libraries are certainly to be commended for their initiative in accepting such a challenging task and bringing it to a successful conclusion with the month-long showing of the results.

The exhibition takes place in The Source and will be officially launched on Thursday 8th August at 6.30 p.m. by well-known Gaelscoil principal and local historian, Mr Jimmy Duggan.

The venue is The Source Arts Centre, Thurles; and a hearty Céad Mile Fáilte is extended to the community at large to attend the launch. The exhibition runs from the 8th to the 29th August 2013 and admission is free.

To Thurles Ancestor – Prince William & Wife Kate – A Baby Son

Kates-babybroyf-copyThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate have left St Mary’s Hospital, Lindo Wing, London, with their newborn son, who has yet to be named, and who is automatically third in line to the British throne.

(Please click on both images for higher resolution)

The baby’s name will be announced later, but George and James, both traditional British royal names, are expected to be favoured choices.

William and Kate carried their son (shown left here) proudly down the steps of the hospital, to cheers from onlookers and spent several minutes talking to assembled media.

The couple and their new infant had been visited by proud grandparents, the Duchess’s parents Michael and Carole Middleton and Prince Charles and his wife Camilla earlier today.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny congratulated the new parents following the birth of their baby boy yesterday afternoon.

It should be remembered that Prince William is a direct descendant of Viscount and Lady Thurles, (latter buried in St Mary’s Church here in Thurles Co Tipperary) through their eldest son, James Butler, Duke of Ormond. The Duke’s daughter, Elizabeth (1640 – 1665), married Philip Stanhope (1634 – 1713), 2nd Earl Chesterfield, and their daughter Elizabeth Stanhope (1663 – 1723), married John Lyon, 4th Earl Strathmore ( Died 1712).

Later in direct line was the 14th Earl Strathmore whose daughter, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (1900-2002) (Present Queen Elisabeth II’s mother) married the then future King George VI (1895 – 1952) and latter are the great grandparents of Prince William and of course great great grandparents of William & Kate’s newborn and as yet unnamed son.
