As is customary, pupils have been deservedly celebrating this milestone ahead of taking a new path; be it to work, an apprenticeship or college. Pubs and nightclubs have been busy all weekend playing the classic graduation songs in honour of our wonderful Leaving Certificate pupils.
Every graduation year has its own special song, but here at Thurles.info, to wish you all well for the weeks and years ahead, we’ve chosen the lesser known hit “My Wish for You” from the American Country music band Rascal Flatts.
“My Wish“ Composers Steve Robson & Jeffrey Steele.
I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow And each road leads you where you want to go And if you’re faced with a choice, and you have to choose I hope you choose the one that means the most to you And if one door opens to another door closed I hope you keep on walkin’ ’till you find the window If it’s cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile But more than anything, more than anything My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small You never need to carry more than you can hold And while you’re out there getting where you’re getting to I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too Yeah, this, is my wish I hope you never look back, but ya never forget All the ones who love you, in the place you left I hope you always forgive, and you never regret And you help somebody every chance you get Oh, you find God’s grace, in every mistake And always give more than you take But more than anything, yeah, more than anything My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small You never need to carry more than you can hold And while you’re out there getting where you’re getting to I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too Yeah, this, is my wish. Yeah My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that want it to Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small You never need to carry more than you can hold And while you’re out there gettin’ where you’re gettin’ to I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too Yeah, this is my wish (My wish for you) This is my wish (My wish for you) Hope you know somebody loves you (My wish for you) May all your dreams come true (My wish for you)
END.
Top Fifteen Graduation Songs for Leaving Cert Class of 2022
In honour of the Leaving Certificate Class of 2022, we’ve pulled together a Top Fifteen of Graduation songs, together with their links. Enjoys these wise words and wishes!
This song hereunder, beautifully sung by Alison Krauss, was often sung by victims of slavery and contained coded messages with regards their attempts to escape.
When the enslaved people escaped, they would walk in the “river” because the water covered their scent from bounty-hunters’ dogs and slave catchers.
Similarly, the words“starry crown” possibly refers to those attempting to escape, to remember to navigate by using the stars.
The words “Good Lord, show me the way”is most likely a prayer for God’s guidance in their efforts to find an escape route, commonly known as the “Underground Railroad.”
The “Underground Railroad” referred too above, was an established network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the 19th century and used by enslaved African Americans to enable their escape into northern free states or Canada. Regarded as the Father of the “Underground Railroad “; William Still helped hundreds of slaves to escape often hiding them in his home in Philadelphia. Others unaware of this network of escape routes, would escape independently of the “Underground Railroad”, to take up residence in the swamplands of Virginia and North Carolina, having escaped their cruel enslavement.
A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp. By Author Harriet Beecher Stowe.
“Away to the Dismal Swamp he speeds, His path was rugged and sore, Through tangled juniper, beds of reeds, Through many a fen, where the serpent feeds, and man never trod before. And, when on the earth he sunk to sleep, If slumber his eyelids knew, He lay where the deadly vine doth weep Its venomous tears, that nightly steep The flesh with blistering dew.”
The International Labour Organization estimates that, by their definitions, over 40 million people are in some form of slavery tonight.
“The Good Old Way” or “Down To The River To Pray”.
As I went down in the river to pray, Studying about that good ol’ way, And who shall wear the starry crown Good Lord, show me the way, O sisters, let’s go down, Let’s go down, come on down, O sisters, let’s go down, Down in the river to pray. As I went down in the river to pray, Studying about that good ol’ way, And who shall wear the robe and crown, Good Lord, show me the way. O brothers, let’s go down, Let’s go down, come on down, Come on, brothers, let’s go down, Down in the river to pray. As I went down in the river to pray, Studying about that good ol’ way, And who shall wear the starry crown, Good Lord, show me the way. O fathers, let’s go down, Let’s go down, come on down, O fathers, let’s go down, Down in the river to pray. As I went down in the river to pray, Studying about that good ol’ way, And who shall wear the robe and crown, Good Lord, show me the way. O mothers, let’s go down, Come on down, don’t you wanna go down? Come on, mothers, let’s go down, Down in the river to pray. As I went down in the river to pray, Studying about that good ol’ way, And who shall wear the starry crown, Good Lord, show me the way. O sinners, let’s go down Let’s go down, come on down O sinners, let’s go down, Down in the river to pray. As I went down in the river to pray, Studying about that good ol’ way, And who shall wear the robe and crown, Good Lord, show me the way.

Urban districts were created in 1898 by the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898. After the partition of Ireland in the period 1920–22, urban districts continued in the Republic of Ireland, while they were abolished in Northern Ireland in 1973 and in England and Wales in 1974.

It is suggested that at ‘long’ dances light refreshments of tea, lemonade, fruit be available.
There shall be no weekly dances except for bona-fide parochial or quasi-parochial learners of Irish dancing.
Any person’s or party proved guilty of misconduct on the floor, either of morals or of drink, shall be removed and shall not be admitted to further dances.
Indelicacy in dress on the part of women dancers to be instantly approved by the person’s in charge; extravagance in dress on the part of our girls – especially of the working class – to be discouraged.

There shall be no retiring from the hall except when people are leaving for good.

Boys and girls under 18 years to be admitted to none of these dances except to the learners dance.
To get rid of the dance fever, it is recommended that our dancehall be closed down now till Christmas.
If is respectfully suggested that the first dance to be held in the City Hall shall be a non-party parochial dance, and that the proceeds be given to purchase seeds and manure for the poor of the new cottages.
For the glory of God and the honour of Cashel.
Boy, we’ve sure come a long way.
Note: Today same district councillors in the Irish Republic do not have the power to sanction even the filling of a pothole.
With the weather good, an invitation by singer/songwriter Neil Diamond, to everyone to take a romantic walk in nature, here in Co. Tipperary; in the knowledge that the grass won’t pay any attention.
“And the time will be our time, and the grass won’t pay no mind”.
“And the Grass Won’t Pay No Mind”
Singer Songwriter: Neil Diamond.
Listen easy, you can hear God calling, Walking barefoot by the stream. Come on to me, your hair softly falling, On my face as in a dream. And the time will be our time, And the grass won’t pay no mind.
Saying nothing, lying where the sun is, Baking down upon our sides. My lips touch you, with their soft wet kisses, Your hands gentle in reply. And the time will be our time, And the grass won’t pay no mind.
Child, touch my soul with your cries, And the music will know what we’ve found. I hear a hundred good-byes, But today I hear only one sound. The moment we’re living is now. Now, now, now, now.
Young bird flying, and a soft wind blowing, Cools the sweat inside my palms. Close my eyes and hear the flowers growing, As you lay sleeping in my arms. And the time will be our time, And the grass won’t pay no mind. No the grass won’t pay no mind. No the grass won’t pay no mind.
