Nuns To Go On The Run In Thurles For Sister Act

Thurles Musical Societies Mr Noel Dundon Reports;

Normally at this time of the year the only run Thurles Musical Society would be worried about would be the five night run for their annual show. However, in 2014 expect events to be somewhat different – a fun different that is. Besides this expected and aforementioned hectic five night run of this year’s show, which this year features the Republic of Ireland Premiere of “Sister Act” the Musical,” the Thurles Society is also embarking upon a Fun Run and Walk on Sunday February 23rd, starting at 12:30pm at the Anner Hotel and finishing .. .. well in plenty of time for the Society’s opening night we anticipate.

Yeah, ‘Nuns on the Run,’ as this fun run and walk is being headlined, is a brand new departure for Thurles Musical Society and there will be a slight twist to the norms associated with such events. Fancy dress is a real option, possibility and probability and in all likelihood there will be a few ‘Habits’ donned to help bring a little bit of flair to this event.

The run will pass the Presentation Convent and the Cathedral of the Assumption en-route and anyone who feels like they need divine inspiration can feel free to drop in.  (It won’t pass St Patrick’s Cemetery although a few individuals could well be headed there after this event.)

While guarantees of good weather can never be guaranteed, Thurles Musical Society can promise great fun and craic on the day. And for all those budding Usain Bolts type athletes out there, an open invitation is being extended to don the Lycra, throw on the runners and come along to join the fun.

No ‘Habit’ do I hear you say? Rubbish, become a Dominican Nun for the event by cutting a hole in an old white sheet.

Now, as for the show itself, huge progress is being made these weeks with everyone working really hard. There is a great buzz about at rehearsals and the cast and chorus are really enjoying the preparations. Rehearsals are running at the moment between the Anner Hotel and The Premier Hall, and Thurles Musical Society wish to thank, most sincerely, both these venues for their assistance and usual courtesy.

Note: Patronage, advertising and sponsorship is being sought at the present time, so anyone wishing to help out in this department would be welcomed with open arms.

Stage All Set For Michael Molumby’s Crumlin Concert

Tenor Michael Molumby

Tenor Michael Molumby

Many of us as parents, somewhere along the line to date, have experienced the stress and upheaval brought about by having had a sick child in hospital and for those of us lucky enough not to have experienced this ordeal, let’s give thanks to our God, whoever we conceive Him to be.

Keeping this thought to the fore, do take note that a fabulous repertoire of songs have been put together for a special concert in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital, which will be hosted by local well known and loved tenor Mr Michael Molumby on Saturday evening next, November 30th in that wonderful welcoming venue, the Horse and Jockey, near Thurles.

Michael, together with a few very professional and talented guest performers, namely; Susan Corcoran, Cathy Keane and Valerie O’Hanlon, have all been working very hard behind the scenes in the last number of weeks, under the musical direction of Mary Rose McNally, to provide a varied and expansive selection of vocal entertainment for you, in what is expected to be a packed venue on the evening.

All proceeds from this event will go to Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children as part of their “Fix Crumlin,” appeal.

Michael, ably assisted by his wife Maria are both hoping to make this event a bumper evening, with top class entertainment being provided. There will be a ‘vocal something,’ to suit everyone’s taste, with selections from popular Irish ballads, medleys, solos, a section from the musicals, some up-tempo popular numbers and of course to round the evening off, that essential festive sing-a-long of Christmas medleys.

Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be George Willoughby. (Latter, I hasten to add, has sworn, under Oath , not to sing, so the large expected turnout should not be seriously affected.)

This gala event will kick off at 8:00pm and anyone wishing to purchase tickets may do so through the Horse and Jockey Hotel at Tel: 0504 44192 or through the organisers.

Tickets cost just €15, so do get along to this event for a guaranteed great night out and in doing so you will put your shoulder behind a truly worthy cause.

Be warned: Remaining tickets, for what promises to be a truly memorable event, are getting as scarce as ‘Hen’s Teeth,’ so take my advice and ensure that you have secured seating for this once-off incredible celebration of music & song.

Remember Venue & Date:- Saturday evening next, November 30th 2013 in the Horse and Jockey.
