According to An Garda Síochána here in Tipperary, the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) conducted a search operation this morning, February 10th, here in Co. Tipperary and neighbouring Co. Kilkenny, together with the assistance of the Emergency Response Unit, local Divisional Garda personnel and the Garda Dog Unit.
This planned operation targeted an organised crime gang, originating in the Munster and South Leinster regions, with known significant links across the continent of Europe.
Over the course of this investigation, assistance had been sought and shared with Europol.
Financial transactions in excess of €4 million were identified from other jurisdictions to Irish bank accounts linked to members of this gang of criminals.
The Criminal Assets Bureau operation resulted in the freezing of sixteen bank accounts linked to members of this organised crime gang, which we understand contained total funds of €540,000.00.
Today’s operation involved searches of four residential addresses and one business premises, where amongst the following items seized were a 201 Volvo XC90, together with financial documents.
We understand that his morning’s search is a significant development in an on-going CAB investigation, targeting an organised crime gang involved in large scale money laundering here in the Republic of Ireland and Europe.
A male, understood to be in his early 20’s, was arrested yesterday evening, at approximately 6:00pm, having been found in possession of cannabis herb, with an estimated street value of approximately €2000. (pending analysis).
The young man, who was observed by Gardai acting suspiciously at the Western Road, in Clonmel; having alighted from a bus, was searched by officers, under the ‘Misuse of Drugs Act’.
Following the search and seizure by officers, he was arrested and is currently being detained at Clonmel Garda Station, under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, for further questioning.
Tipperary Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses following a single vehicle collision in County Tipperary.
At around 10:00pm on Wednesday January 27th, Gardaí in Cahir received a report of a road traffic collision at Boolahallagh, Newcastle, Co. Tipperary.
Gardaí located a grey Ford Focus which had gone off the road. However when they attended the accident scene nobody was found present in or around the vehicle.
Subsequently however, two male teenagers presented themselves at South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel. Both youths displayed injuries consistent with having been involved in a serious road traffic collision.
One of the young men, we understand, had serious injuries and was, following assessment, transferred to University Hospital Waterford, while the other is believed to have minor injuries.
The road remained closed to traffic yesterday with diversions in place.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses, especially motorists who may have dash-cam footage, latter travelling on the Newcastle to Cappoquin Road on last Wednesday evening, between 5:00pm and 10:00pm. Gardaí from the Tipperary Town Drugs Unit, while on a routine mobile patrol in Tipperary Town, halted a vehicle on St. Michael’s Avenue at around 7:00pm yesterday, January 20th 2021.
The Gardaí, on carrying out a search of the vehicle, discovered approximately €48,000 in cash.
The driver of the car, a man aged in his 60’s, was immediately arrested on suspicion of laundering the proceeds of crime and taken to Tipperary Garda Station, where he is currently being detained for questioning.
Gardaí from Templemore and Thurles, investigating the robbery at Meagher’s News Agency & Grocery; on Sunday, January 10th last, latter premises situated on Lower Main Street, Borrisoleigh, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, have, yesterday, arrested two men aged in their 20’s.
Readers will remember that at approximately 5:00pm, two men, one of them carrying what is understood to be a knife, had entered the said premises in Borrisoleigh village, where they had threatened a staff member demanding they hand over cash from the cash register.
The two men then exited the shop with a substancial sum of money, before driving away in a car that was parked a short distance away.
Both young men were detained at Templemore and Nenagh Garda Stations under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
One of the men has since been charged with the offence and was due to appear before Nenagh District Court this morning, January 15th at 10:30am.
The other man has since been released, while a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions, (DPP).
