Breast Check – Free Screening Service To Women In Thurles

breast-cancerThe National Cancer Screening Service has announced that BreastCheck, the Irish National Breast Screening Programme will shortly invite women, who reside in the Thurles area, to attend for free mammograms. This free publically funded screening service is being presently offered to women aged between 50 and 64 on a two yearly cycle.

Women living in Thurles will be screened from a mobile digital screening unit located in the grounds of Nenagh General Hospital, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.

A breast check x-ray is a simple, but essential procedure which will take approximately just 30 minutes of your time.  The aim of screening is to detect breast cancer as early as possible thus guaranteeing a much greater chance of the successful treatment of this disease.

Statistics show that the vast majority of women screened are found to be perfectly healthy, with less than one per cent actually diagnosed with this life threatening disease.

A specialist breast check multi-disciplinary team provides the screening service to women. Quality assurance standards in operation throughout BreastCheck will include the double-reading of all mammograms by two separate, specially trained radiologists, the use of triple assessment for women that need further investigation and the continuing audit and maintenance of all equipment used.

Mr. Tony O’Brien, CEO of the National Cancer Screening Service, stated:

“It is important that women take this valuable opportunity to look after their health. Many women living in Thurles have already been contacted by BreastCheck and we hope every woman invited will make time to attend for this important appointment.”

If you have not been contacted, women can register by calling Freephone 1800 45 45 55 or visiting on line www.breastcheck.ie.

The latest programme report (Dated 2007/2008), shows that in the 2007 BreastCheck,  the National Breast Screening Programme provided 66,527 free mammograms to women aged 50 to 64, which is the highest annual number of women screened by the programme to date.

Note: The overall rate of acceptance of invitations to screening was 76.3% of all women invited.  This figure is in excess of the expected original programme target of 70%.

Future of Nenagh Hospital Secure – Lowry Secures Multimillion Euro Investment

nenagh-hos

Speaking in the Dáil Éireann tonight, Deputy Michael Lowry, confirmed a multi million euro investment into Nenagh hospital that will also crucially improve patient safety for the people of North Tipperary.

After extensive meetings directly with the Minister for Health, Mary Harney, Lowry has secured the following pledges:

  • A commitment to commission one overall integrated plan for the Midwest and to guarantee that the development of Limerick and Nenagh would take place in tandem and conjunction with each other.
  • Capital projects committed too for Nenagh, include that  the ‘Lowry agreement‘ with the Taoiseach, will be fully delivered. These multi million projects, such as the new surgical theatres, the endoscopy and diagnostic units, will be included for funding under the Department of Health’s Multi Annual Capital Programme, to be announced in the coming weeks.
  • The existing Cat Scanner at Nenagh General Hospital will be fully commissioned and staffed.
  • A significant enhancement of the Ambulance Service in the Midwest, through increased out of hours ambulance cover.
  • An adequate number of ‘Advance Paramedic Practitioners’ to cover North Tipperary.
  • That Day Surgery and Diagnostic facilities are to be extensively developed and easily accessible with the appointment of eight additional hospital consultants to enable the delivery of these new services and specialities in Nenagh and Ennis hospitals.
  • That Primary Care teams will also play a major part in the proposed development of health services in North Tipperary. Currently 2 teams are successfully up and running in Roscrea and Borrisokane/ Cloughjordan. In Thurles, the development of 2 Primary Care teams is well underway. The process will be expedited to provide care teams in Templemore, Nenagh, Ballina and Newport. These are critical to ensure the success of any local health reform and will ensure that the people of North Tipperary are treated effectively in their own localities.
  • A new medical assessment unit will be provided at Nenagh Hospital. This will be accessible by a GP referral system. What this in effect means is that most of the patients currently treated at Nenagh, will continue to be treated there. There will be no reduction in the service provided to the public of North Tipperary requiring medical care.”

Speaking to Thurles.Info the Thurles based Deputy paid tribute to the staff of Nenagh General and assured them of the safety of their positions. He Stated:

“The staff at Nenagh hospital are professional, dedicated, caring and committed. I have been assured that under the new proposed reconfiguration, all permanent Nursing, Attendant, Porter, Cleaning, Catering and Clerical Officer staff will retain their jobs.

Lowry reiterated his belief that a major investment is the only way available at this time to save Nenagh Hospital.

“I am of the firm belief, that without this investment – there is no future for Nenagh Hospital and it will be allowed to whittle away and die. I believe that the people in North Tipperary know the extent of my commitment to them and their best interests. In that respect this investment will best serve the people of my community.”

New Rehab Care Facility For Thurles – €1.4 Million Funding Confirmed

new-rehab-site1Deputy Michael Lowry has confirmed approved funding of €1,397,329 for a Day Center and Special Needs Housing Accommodation for the Rehab Group in Thurles.

This funding is provided under Department of Environment’s Capital Assistance Scheme for voluntary housing projects.

This will be a permanent facility to accommodate the long established Rehab Care group who have been working out of old and unsuitable accommodation at the old Sugar Factory building in Thurles.

The new residential facility will be located near the current Government Buildings at Stradavoher, and next to the Frank Dwan Center in Thurles.

Planning had been approved since 2007 for the facility for the Rehab Group to build day resource centre, two supported residential units for people with disabilities, site entrance and associated site development works.

Expressing his delight at the news Deputy Lowry told Thurles.Info;

“This funding has been a long time coming for the town, and comes now as a major boost for the Rehab Care Centre and their team, who work out of the old Sugar Factory premises in Cabra, Thurles. Local people with a disability will soon have the use of a state of the art daycare centre and access to accommodation units in the town, should they so wish. This will undoubtedly represent a great boost in the quality of life for the users of the new facility once it is completed”.
