Ease Winter Cold Symptoms With Salt Water

Sore Throat

My late Grandmother was correct after all it seems, “Only time can cure the common cold”, said she. Doctors now confirm that a simple gargle with salt water greatly helps to ease your misery.

An itchy sore throat and respiratory congestion are the more common symptoms of a common cold, and gargling with salt water does help.

A sore throat occurs when the area around the tonsils becomes inflamed or infected. Pain in the throat is usually the first symptom to develop, though if you get a sore throat through being infected with the common cold, then it will likely develop further after infected liquid runs down the back of your throat from your runny nose.

Such a saline solution can draw excess fluid from inflamed tissues in the throat, making them hurt less, states Dr. Philip T. Hagen, editor in chief of the “Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies,” which is due for publication in October. Dr. Hagen points out that gargling loosens thick mucus, which will remove irritants like allergens, bacteria and fungi from your throat.

For best results, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a full glass of warm water and gargle the solution for a few seconds before spitting it out.

And again, drink plenty of liquids. Teas and water are best.

Adults who want a more palatable remedy against coughs and sore throats can try mixing warm water with lemon and honey. This mix of course can be swallowed.

Details of a study published in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2005, also found gargling with salt water extremely helpful against sore throats and congestion.

Tipperary Devoid Of All Real Hospital Emergency Services

Labour Senator Phil Prendergast.

Some 15,000 people took to the streets in March of this year and a further 70,000 people signed a petition rejecting the downgrading of South Tipperary General Hospital.

The Labour Party now claim to hold a confidential HSE document which shows plans to reconfigure hospital services in the South East which will almost inevitably mean a massive downgrading of South Tipperary General Hospital.

Tipperary Labour Senator, Phil  Prendergast, claims that as prophesied,  plans are afoot for Hospital services  to be centralised at St Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny and Waterford Regional, while the former is being promoted as the main general hospital in the region, at the expense of South Tipperary General and Wexford General Hospital.

If this plan is allowed to progress then South Tipperary General Hospital will lose all its maternity service and the Emergency Department will be reduced to a 12-hour service similar to the charade that masquerades as Nenagh Hospital in North Tipperary.

In relation to South Tipperary, Labour Senator Phil Prendergast stated:

“This will have a devastating effect on the whole community and on the very identity of South Tipperary. All of this will happen in the name of a flawed model of health care forced upon the South Tipp public by a discredited HSE, which is acting as the Trojan horse for those who want to make a profit from people’s health. There will be no more Tipperary born babies, people will have to travel over an hour in emergencies after 8pm, more jobs will be lost and it will be far more difficult to attract investment. In the North East, where services were smashed in the same way some years ago, several deaths have been attributed to the long ambulance journey for emergency patients and this will inevitably happen here. If Fianna Fail is willing to make generations pay billions to bail out the fat cat bankers and developers, they will have no problem in serving their paymasters who want to make money out of the health of our citizens.”

If this information is correct then from 6.00pm daily,(not 8.00pm, ‘tut tut’ remember your travelling time,) all residents from Thurles and its environs will have to make the following travel arrangements in emergency cases:- Thurles to Waterford Distance (85km): Driving Time Away: 1 hr 40 mins and Thurles to Limerick Distance (95km): Driving Time Away: 1 hr 30 mins.

In emergency cases please do try to allow for poor weather conditions, as we all experienced last winter, potholed roads near Rearcross and Kilcommon, and that damned traffic congestion caused mainly by so called traffic calming.

One Tip: Best pack a couple of blankets for the journey, as a few nights sleeping rough in a hospital corridor can turn out slightly cold and drafty.  Remember this latter statement will not apply if you are lucky to hold health insurance, but do make sure that you have your Membership Number tattooed on your right arm.  I have noticed the eyes of Consultants, Anesthetists and Surgeons actually light up, when Vhi is mentioned, indicating that they prefer this method of payment at reception.

It is important also to remember that if you die along the way, do have the courtesy to die with some dignity, have positive thoughts about how you will be saving this caring government the future expense of your contributory Old Age or Widows pension, your 29 weekly payments of €18 for fuel allowance, not to mention that valuable free TV licence.

Die as a martyr for the HSE and your local politicians for God’s sake, instead of your constant whinging.

P.S Any chance of your ould No1 in the forthcoming General Election, Missus (Nod, Wink, Wink.) ?

Unsatisfactory Delivery Of Orthodontic Services In Tipperary

Deputy Noel Coonan has expressed concern over the delivery of orthodontic services in the Mid-West Area which includes his North Tipperary constituency.

A meeting for parents and guardians whose children are on the public orthodontic waiting lists will be held next week in Limerick to point out the urgency of the situation and give advice on children who cannot receive treatment as immediately as needed.

Selection for eligibility will be discussed, as will the unsatisfactory waiting times. In 2002, the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children examined the issue of orthodontic service in Ireland and subsequently expressed its ‘total dissatisfaction’ with the service. The Committee had held a series of public meetings and heard evidence from a number of invited groups, organisations and individuals.

Deputy Coonan stated:

“A Consultant Orthodontist from the Mid-West region, Dr Ted McNamara, will highlight, at next week’s meeting, how the Joint Committee’s recommendations from both 2002 and 2005 still await implementation. It was stated in previous years that all the difficulties experienced by Orthodontics can be traced back to the Department of Health and Children, but Dr. McNamara and colleagues have recommendations that now must be heeded for the safe development of our children. Dr. McNamara is devoted to improving regional orthodontic departments and providing a top quality and efficient service. In 2002, the Joint Committee said that the interests of children are paramount and must take precedence over all other interests yet eight years later extensive waiting times still exist and the situation needs to drastically improve. When the Dáil reconvenes shortly, I will raise this issue with the Minister for Health and Children to implement the committees’ recommendations and provide earlier intervention. We need to decrease the time from when a child is placed on the list and receives treatment. This Government has reduced expenditure in the State adult dental schemes but it must make an exception and employ more staff including consultants and specialist orthodontists.”

On July 13th of this year, the Joint Committee met again, where orthodontic experts reiterated that “early treatment is a priority for improved clinical and psychological outcomes for children.”

Waiting lists have been affected by the recruitment embargo and lists need to be clinically validated to ensure that those who will benefit most from early intervention are assessed first and treated early. It was agreed that different categories must be put in place so the list is clearer and less worrying for those observing.

Shannondoc Thurles God Save Us

Plain arrogance, no I am not referring to disgraced Willie O’Dea’s announcement that he will run again for the position of TD in the next General Election.

Maybe it is because my own family doctor offers me and my dependants a five star service. By five star service I mean accurate diagnoses, the insistence that every possible eventually be fully checked out,  asks clear and direct questions regarding my particular demise at the time of my visit, which thankfully is not that often.

Firstly I should explain, Shannondoc is a co-operative set up by the General Practitioners in the Mid-West region in partnership with the Health Services Executive Mid-West. Its purpose is to provide an out-of-hours service to patients, while improving the quality of life for our doctors and while appearing to preserve what is left of basic rural general practice. Shannondoc was put in place prior to the downgrading of all of our hospital services in the County of Tipperary and to many residents is the last remaining vestage of fast immediate help for babies and the elderly.

It is not a walk-in service however and you must make an appointment before you attend the nearest treatment centre, which is why Thurles residents must  phone Limerick, 95km away to contact the Thurles service which is just 2km away. Calls to this service are taped so certain of my allegations made in this statement can be fully validated.

So to the tale and let me say that my first dealing with Thurles Shannondoc, at about 7.30 on Saturday night last, was certainly not worthy of even a one star certification.
