Horse & Jockey Vintage Club members recently covered a 210 mile return trip, travelling at just 20mph, to raise €1000.00 for the “Thurles Meals On Wheels,” Centre, latter situated at Stradavoher, Thurles.
Their route, using vintage tractors, took them to Innishannon (Irish: Inis Eonáin.) in Co Cork. Included in our picture are Vintage Club members & Thurles Meals On Wheels volunteers & organisers Michael Kennedy, Bob Maher, Sadie Hayden, Billy Gleeson, Pat Buckley, Michael Fahey, David Campbell, Mary Doyle, Liam Morris, Kathleen Bourke, Marie O’Dwyer, Pat Russell, Rosie O’Neill, Ann Sheehan, Finola Ryan & Maureen Broderick.

As many of our readers are aware ‘Meals on Wheels,’ are an organisation that deliver cooked food to individuals at home on certain days & therefore require volunteers to have an adequate knowledge of basic cooking in order to prepare meals by a set time each day.
Note: Volunteer drivers are regularly needed, by this worthy charity organisation, for just one hour per week to keep this centre running smoothly, so if you are available to help out, please contact Social Services at Tel: 0504-22169. The centre also provides a ‘Small Charge Laundry Service,’ every week except in the month of August.
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels originated in Great Britain during the Blitz beginning in 1940, when many people had lost their homes and therefore the ability to cook their own food. The concept of delivering hot meals evolved into today’s modern programme that deliver mostly to the housebound elderly and infirm, either for free or with a small donation. Many early services operating during the Second World War, used old prams to transport the meals, using straw bales, and even old felt hats, to keep the meals warm while in transit.
Well done to the Horse & Jockey Vintage Club members and on behalf of Thurles Meals On Wheels; ‘Thank You.’

VEC’s provides a comprehensive range of educational services to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of learners throughout the country. Amongst these services the Committees provide Literacy Service and support Community as well as workplace education with County Councils, the Health Service Executive (H.S.E.), FÁS, and other agencies.

First muted in 2010 by Fianna Fáil’s Tánaiste and then Minister for Education, Mary Coughlan, current Labour Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn has now stated that legislation to give effect to the changes was presently being prepared.
Co Tipperary’s currently run two VECs will now be combined into one, as part of these new changes, and overall national plans are expected to differ with regard to mergers planned by the previous government.
It has yet to be decided where the new headquarters of these newly configured VECs will be located.

Some of the ways to reduced energy costs in the home were highlighted by the Co Tipperary village of Emly, latter who represented Ireland in Brussels on June 28th last, to compete at the European Energy Neighbourhoods Competition against 15 other contending European countries.
Emly, who were represented by some of their successful 2009 Tidy Towns Committee, had emerged winners last May in the National Energy Saving Competition, successfully run by the Tipperary Energy Agency, having beaten other local communities representing Waterford, Cork and Galway, and all who were competing for the title of Ireland’s most energy efficient neighbourhood.
Mr Vincent Carragher, (Energy Manager at the Tipperary Energy Agency) together with Emly Tidy Towns Members then travelled to Brussels for last Friday’s ceremony and were adjudicated 6th place in the competition, with the eventual overall winning entry representing Greece.
The Emly group highlighted the best & most correct use of everyday labour saving utensils, like Water Immersions, Fridge Freezers, Dishwasher, Tumble dryers and Electric Kettles, on their list of Energy Savings tips.
Electric Ireland also lists these items as the top five ‘Energy Guzzlers,’ which when correctly utilised, can make such a massive financial saving to our domestic electrical costs.
