Some of the ways to reduced energy costs in the home were highlighted by the Co Tipperary village of Emly, latter who represented Ireland in Brussels on June 28th last, to compete at the European Energy Neighbourhoods Competition against 15 other contending European countries.

Emly, who were represented by some of their successful 2009 Tidy Towns Committee, had emerged winners last May in the National Energy Saving Competition, successfully run by the Tipperary Energy Agency, having beaten other local communities representing Waterford, Cork and Galway, and all who were competing for the title of Ireland’s most energy efficient neighbourhood.

Mr Vincent Carragher, (Energy Manager at the Tipperary Energy Agency) together with Emly Tidy Towns Members then travelled to Brussels for last Friday’s ceremony and were adjudicated 6th place in the competition, with the eventual overall winning entry representing Greece.

The Emly group highlighted the best & most correct use of everyday labour saving utensils, like Water Immersions, Fridge Freezers, Dishwasher, Tumble dryers and Electric Kettles, on their list of Energy Savings tips.

Electric Ireland also lists these items as the top five ‘Energy Guzzlers,’ which when correctly utilised, can make such a massive financial saving to our domestic electrical costs.
