The controversial €100 Household Tax Information Leaflet, on which the Government has spent thousands of Euros of OUR money, is in the process of being delivered to every household in the country presently, so expect to receive your copy over the next week or two.
(Click on image for larger picture.)
Note this is NOT the form with which to register, merely it is an information leaflet and a reminder, so do take a few minutes to read it. It outlines what the tax is for, the penalties, the ways to pay, who is liable etc.
If you decide to show your protest at this unfair and inequitable tax, instead of putting the leaflet in your recycling bin, place it in an envelope, seal it, put a 55c stamp on it, and then POST it, having addressed it to Mr Minister Phil Hogan, Grovine, Co. Kilkenny. It is estimated that there are 1.8 million leaflets being distributed.
The following households ONLY will have the charge waived :-
- Those in receipt of mortgage interest supplement – (18,000 households approx.)
- Those in certain unfinished housing estates – (Less than 1,300 estates approx.)
A list of all “Unfinished Estates,” are available to view Here
No other waivers will apply and people on welfare and small pensions are being expected to pay.
Less than 6% of Irish Tax Payers have to date only registered their dwellings.
The public meeting by campaigners against Septic Tank, Water, and Household Tax charges, held in Hayes Hotel, Liberty Square, Thurles, on Friday last, February 10th, adequately demonstrated the outrage felt by rural dwellers with regard to this controversial and discriminatory tax, with well over 200 in attendance.
Local elected politicians supporting the tax were more than conspicuous by their very absence, as speakers from the floor, which included members of Thurles Chamber, elderly residents and parents of young families with mortgages, vocally condemning the proposed charges, as discriminatory, anti rural Ireland and totally unacceptable.
Their worst fears expressed on Friday night were further supported today with figures, released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), which revealed that more than half of households have reduced spending on groceries and two-thirds are purchasing less clothing and footwear.
According to these new figures, one in ten households has borrowed money from friends or family to pay for basic services during the recession, and one fifth of Irish residents have delayed or missed paying a bill over the last two years. Nearly half have spent all or some of their savings. This Quarterly National Household Survey also found that spending on health insurance and pension contributions has also been cut by more than 10%.
In this survey, one member of each household was asked if they had to cut back on spending on several categories of goods or services as a result of the economic climate in Ireland. E.g. mortgage payments, utility bills, groceries, clothing and footwear, holidays, nights out, and extra tutorials for children’s education.
The survey concluded that 79% of households had cut back their spending on at least one of the above, including one in ten delaying or missing a loan repayment: 10% missing paying their credit card bill; one in five reducing club membership spending; 10% cutting back on tutorials for children; and holidays abroad cut back by just under half of all households questioned.
This survey was conducted last year, wonder what it reads like this year?

North Tipperary Vintage and Machinery Club members pictured here presenting a cheque for €2,200, to Mr Billy Shanahan, latter representing the worthwhile organisation “Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.”
The presentation was made in Corcoran’s Pub, Two-Mile-Borris, Thurles, Co.Tipperary and even Billy’s Guide Dog showed her full appreciation with a big sloppy kiss for one of the club members.
John Dunne, the Club’s Chairman, was loud in his praise of all who had generously supported their fundraising events over the past year, both financially and also in donating their much valued time to all projects undertaken.

Comedian PJ Gallagher has helped launched a unique partnership between Down Syndrome Ireland and the Irish Greyhound Board, with a National Fundraising Night taking place on February 25th, in aid of Down’s Syndrome sufferers.
This is now the second year running that the Greyhound Board will host such an event nationwide, to help raise much needed funds for DSI.
Events will take place at major Greyhound racing venues across the country, including Thurles Greyhound Stadium, Shelbourne Park, Dundalk, Galway, Lifford, Limerick, Mullingar, Newbridge, Tralee and Waterford.
This family-friendly ‘Benefit Night at the Dogs,’ hopes to raise over €100,000, which will go directly to support a wide range of DSI services both locally and nationally. Various competitions and raffles will also be taking place at these venues with ‘goodie bags,’ given to all children attending such events.
Down Syndrome Ireland, 95% funded by voluntary contributions, is an incredible organisation helping thousands of families here in Ireland and with ever increasing cuts in services, it continues to serve over 3,000 members who are increasingly more and more reliant on this organisation, to give them very vital service and support.
If you can help, then please do. Remember the date Feb. 25th next, Thurles Greyhound Stadium.
