Irish Multiplex Cinemas (IMC), one of Ireland’s leading innovators in the film entertainment business, and RealD, the world’s leading outfitter of 3D-enabled theatres, announced today that IMC will add RealD 3D capabilities to this multiplex location in Thurles. The rollout will begin immediately with completion of all RealD 3D installations expected in April in time for the release of Monsters vs. Aliens (Dreamworks Animation).
Paul Ward, director of IMC said,
“The RealD 3D technology being installed in all IMC Cinemas shows IMC’s commitment to providing not only the best in customer service, but also the best customer enjoyment of the cinema going experience by the early introduction of the newest technological advances available.”
Bob Mayson, managing director of RealD Europe Ltd. said,
“Ireland is an important market for us in Europe and we’re extremely pleased to be working with IMC to outfit all of their multiplex locations. Paul Ward and his team understand the potential of RealD 3D and are grasping the opportunity with both hands.”
RealD uses a single projector that alternately projects the right-eye frame and left-eye frame, and circularly polarizes these frames, clockwise for the right eye and counter clockwise for the left eye, using a liquid crystal screen placed in front of the projector lens. Circularly polarized glasses make sure each eye sees only “its own” picture, even if the head is tilted. The very high frame rate, which is 72 frames per second per eye, makes sure the image looks continuous. In RealD Cinema, each frame is projected three times to reduce flicker.
RealD’s next-generation technology is deployed across the world’s largest 3D platform in more than 34 countries with over 8,000 screens under contract and nearly 2,600 RealD 3D screens today. RealD is the global leader in 3D, bringing the most advanced and realistic digital 3D experience to cinemas worldwide.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Thurles is organised by a sub committee of the Thurles Town Council.
The committee is made up of members of the Thurles Town Council and other interested persons who have been co-opted onto the committee. The committee is known as the Thurles Town Council St. Patricks Day Celebration Committee. The Thurles parade takes place on the nearest Sunday to St. Patricks Day and is seen as both a local and a national celebration of our heritage and culture. The Parade is sponsored by the Thurles Town Council, local business people, clubs, organisations and individuals.
Over the past number of years the parade in Thurles has developed into one of the largest such parades in the country. Over 1,000 people participated in the 2008 parade. This included 10 marching bands, local school groups, floats, industrial entries, costumed groups and individuals and numerous walking groups. An estimated 6,000 enjoyed the parade and it was widely agreed that it was one of our best parades to date. Numerous prizes were awarded over a broad range of categories and over 700 medals were handed out to the young people who took part in the parade. The 2009 parade will take place on Sunday 15th March and leaves from Abbey Road at 3pm sharp. The parade route, of one mile, continues down Friar Street entering Liberty Square where the entries pass in front of the reviewing stand. The parade exits down Slievenamon Road and finishes at approximately 4.30pm. Entertainment will be provided in Liberty Square from 2.30pm with a wide variety of music, dancing and fun for the entire family.
Please Note: If you or your band are passing close to Thurles, (possibly you are destined to take part in celebrations elsewhere on March 17th) this town would love to meet you and we extend an open invitation to you all, to come join us in our celebrations on March 15th next.

Music lovers, its another year, another reason to get excited about Phoenix Productions. Thurles town’s premier youth musical theatre company are preparing to take to the stage this February with their annual fund raising cabaret entitled, ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’. After several successful years of productions in the Thurles Sarsfield’s Social Centre, this year the company are set to take on a larger venue in which to perform and what every local will agree is their true spiritual home, namely the newly renovated Premier Hall.
The format and composition of these annual cabarets, produced by Phoenix, is quite simple. Each cabaret is a showcase of both new and more traditional musical theatre. But perhaps most importantly, they are a unique medium to show off the exceptional range and diversity of musical talent exhibited by the town’s more than gifted young adults. This year’s cabaret promises to be one of the most exciting in years. Traditional purists out there will know every step and every note of classics like Oklahoma, Bugsy Malone, Anything Goes and that little known show called Grease.
Last year’s mega success ‘High School Musical’ deserves a second outing for this cabaret, with exerpts from ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Billy Elliott The Musical’ making their respective debuts in this musical mad town called Thurles. Of course Hairspray and Billy Elliott have had the benefit of being moulded by big Hollywood movie magic over the last decade or so, but their place on the live stage is still as emotionaly poignant and as electrically charged as anything that can ever emanate from the silver screen.
‘You Can’t Stop The Beat’ is the first Phoenix Production, post their 10 year celebrations and by its own admission, has a massive legacy to uphold as it begins the companies second decade. ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’, takes place in The Premier Hall, Friday and Saturday the 20th and 21st of February next. Do yourself a favour and be there from the very beginning of decade number two. This group are simply too good to miss, this group Phoenix continues to amaze and surprise.
Mark the calender folks:
Date: Friday and Saturday 20th and 21st February 2009
Venue: Premier Hall, Thurles, Co.Tipperary.
Wrap up well and we will see you in February.
Thurles Town Councillor Michael Grogan has strongly backed a motion that the newly revamped ‘Field of Legends’ Semple Stadium should play host to the 2009 Senior Munster Hurling Final.
Monday’s Munster Council GAA meeting received a motion from outgoing Tipperary chair John Costigan that Thurles would be the venue for the final to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association in the Cathedral town.
Munster Council Chairman, Jimmy O’ Gorman of Waterford is said to be “strongly considering” the request and a response is expected in the near future.
Speaking to Thurles. Info Cllr. Grogan said:
“We have a facility for the game of hurling that is second to none in the country. I would go as far as to call on the Munster council to issue a regulation that, where possible, that the Munster hurling final would be played every year in the home of hurling here in Thurles. The current stadium chairman Con Hogan and his team have done a fantastic job and have built on the work of previous stadium committees done through the years. We now have a stadium that is the envy of counties the length and breadth of the country, and one that generates a lot of money for the town and the local economy. In Thurles we have the history, the town facilities, the hurling tradition, the passion and the capacity for such an event. I feel that the majority of the general GAA public would be supportive of the notion that Thurles would hold the Munster Hurling final annually. Every hurling fan enjoys the pilgrimage to Semple Stadium, and I feel that it would be an unbelievable boost to the town of Thurles if the Munster hurling final was held here every year.”
