 Thurles Tipperary
Fiona Looney’s play written and recorded while living briefly in Hayes Hotel here in Thurles, Co Tipperary will take to the TV Air-Waves on Thursday evening next, beginning at 10:15pm.
Fiona recently tweeted ” Time to start shamelessly plugging #playnextdoor. My Thurles adventure and play, Pheasant Island, on RTE1 Thurs 10.15pm. Laugh. Cry. Hurl.”
This new RTE1 presentation entitled “Play Next Door” (New factual series) is somewhat shrouded in mystery as to what we can expect to view, but from what I can gather, three well-known authors were challenged to write a play under unusual circumstances. They are then each sent to live in selected Irish communities for a month, meeting the locals and observing life in their chosen habitat, before constructing a drama set in a selected property in which they are based.
Irish columnist, playwright, scriptwriter and media personality Fiona Looney was sent here to Thurles in Co Tipperary, where the location for her work was a pub that is no longer open for business, close to “Costcutters” supermarket (Formally known as L&N) in Friar Street.
According to RTE, (Latter which rarely broadcast these days outside the Pale, and indeed when they do, rarely in the forgotten quite rural backwater that is beautiful Tipperary.) we can expect a touch of the ‘Secret Millionaire’ to this new series, but without the large cheques.
Expect also an appearance possibly from one or two of our much loved award winning members of Thurles Drama Group, which is expected to survive the cutting room floor and which will give us the added incentive to forget “NetFlix” for just one night.
Fiona we trust has been kind to Thurles, situated as it is here in Hidden Tipperary and with apologies to the poet W.B.Yeats, we hope she has “Trodden softly, because you tread on our dreams.”
Pin a reminder up on your refrigeration door folks: RTE1 – Thursday January 9th at 10.15pm (22:15) – “Play Next Door.”
 Tenor Michael Molumby
Many of us as parents, somewhere along the line to date, have experienced the stress and upheaval brought about by having had a sick child in hospital and for those of us lucky enough not to have experienced this ordeal, let’s give thanks to our God, whoever we conceive Him to be.
Keeping this thought to the fore, do take note that a fabulous repertoire of songs have been put together for a special concert in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital, which will be hosted by local well known and loved tenor Mr Michael Molumby on Saturday evening next, November 30th in that wonderful welcoming venue, the Horse and Jockey, near Thurles.
Michael, together with a few very professional and talented guest performers, namely; Susan Corcoran, Cathy Keane and Valerie O’Hanlon, have all been working very hard behind the scenes in the last number of weeks, under the musical direction of Mary Rose McNally, to provide a varied and expansive selection of vocal entertainment for you, in what is expected to be a packed venue on the evening.

All proceeds from this event will go to Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children as part of their “Fix Crumlin,” appeal.
Michael, ably assisted by his wife Maria are both hoping to make this event a bumper evening, with top class entertainment being provided. There will be a ‘vocal something,’ to suit everyone’s taste, with selections from popular Irish ballads, medleys, solos, a section from the musicals, some up-tempo popular numbers and of course to round the evening off, that essential festive sing-a-long of Christmas medleys.
Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be George Willoughby. (Latter, I hasten to add, has sworn, under Oath , not to sing, so the large expected turnout should not be seriously affected.)
This gala event will kick off at 8:00pm and anyone wishing to purchase tickets may do so through the Horse and Jockey Hotel at Tel: 0504 44192 or through the organisers.
Tickets cost just €15, so do get along to this event for a guaranteed great night out and in doing so you will put your shoulder behind a truly worthy cause.
Be warned: Remaining tickets, for what promises to be a truly memorable event, are getting as scarce as ‘Hen’s Teeth,’ so take my advice and ensure that you have secured seating for this once-off incredible celebration of music & song.
Remember Venue & Date:- Saturday evening next, November 30th 2013 in the Horse and Jockey.
Comedian Tommy Tiernan will begin his world tour of Tipperary beginning late next month.
Tiernan states he is delighted to be touring Tipperary, “a county as split as Korea,” but regardless, the Irish comedian, actor and writer will be bringing his show to both sides of the North/South divide.
Tommy’s mother Helen O’Brien was born and raised in Clonmel Co Tipperary and he spent many a family holiday as he recalls “skittin around the town.”
Not always at home in a county which has no coastline, Tommy will take to the roads of North Tipperary with a show full of stories gathered from his touring of both rural Ireland and the rest of the world.
