Detailed description:

Tipperary County Council and Thurles Municipal District are now working towards the provision of new footways/cycle paths and improvements to existing footways adjacent to the River Suir and its tributary, the Drish River. The overall development now under consideration is sub-divided into four phases as follow: –

Phase 1. Extending along the west bank of the River Suir from the footbridge adjacent to the Town Park at Thomond Road, as far as Thurles Golf Club.
Phase 2. Extending northwards along the east bank of the River Suir as far as its confluence with the Drish River and from there along the south bank of the Drish River as far as the bridge on Mill Road.
Phase 3. Extending along the Drish River from the bridge on Mill Road to the N75 National Secondary Road on the outskirts of Thurles;
Phase 4. Extending from the bridge on Mill Road for a distance of approximately 1km northwards along Mill Road to meet up with the existing footpath.

The Project, to which this Consultant’s Brief (May 2021) (the “Brief”) relates, consists of the following elements of the overall development:-

  • The preliminary design, route selection and preparation of the overall Master Plan in respect of Phases 1 to 4 inclusive, and
  • The Part 8 planning process, the detailed design, tender, construction and handover stages of Phases 1 and 2 only.

Village Market Holycross Saturday Next, June 12th.

Village Market – Holycross

Saturday next June 12th 1:00pm – 3:00pm.

An exciting village initiative, hosting a wealth of skills, talents and creativity from our community and surrounding areas, in Holycross Village Centre, across from the Abbey Church.

In the past Irish social history has shown that villages have sprung up around existing monastic sites, holding markets and fairs that gave that area an economic base for its very existence.

Markets have ancient origins in Ireland, reaching back to the Irish word Margadh (market) or Markadr (market) latter word borrowed from the Old Norse language spoken by the Vikings.

It is not surprising therefore that Holycross Village Bi-Weekly Market should set up within yards of the historic Holycross Abbey, near Thurles, Co. Tipperary; with the organisers working closely with a very select, talented and growing group of vendors.

Chatting to the organisers today, we learn that Holycross Village Bi-Weekly Market now has some 30 open air stalls, thus making this street market more appealing and engaging for all age groups.
On Saturday next, June 12th, there will be Face Painting for little people and for those not so little, Hair Braiding.

With no hair left and wearing a grey beard to hide my ugly mug, personally I will forego the hair braiding and face painting; settling instead for a loaf or two of Crossogue Porridge Bread. (Trust me it’s delicious, try it.)

Hope to see you there!

Holycross Bi-Weekly Market Huge Success On Saturday Last.

A multitude of consumers turned out to support the first local Village Market held in Holycross, Thurles, Co. Tipperary on Saturday last.

“From a needle to an anchor” can be found at Holycross Market.

This first Bi-Weekly Market was officially blessed by Rev. Fr. Celsus Tierney (Parish Priest Holycross) and officially opened by Mr Paddy Hayes (Holycross Tidy Village Association) and Mrs Ann Lanigan (Village Committee Member).

It was truly great to witness the many visitors in attendance and the skilled locals, of all ages, trading on the day.  Despite unsettled weather, most of those selling fresh produce were sold out within the first hour of trading.

A huge ‘Thank You’ must go to Fr. Tierney, Holycross parish, Holycross committee, local Tidy Village Association members, the stewards, vendors, musicians, Cormackstown Heritage Centre, Mairead Ryan and most of all to the members of public who came in search of fresh local produce and the many other attractive hand made goods.

The Village Market look forward to welcoming everyone on Saturday next May 29th; (1:00pm to 3:00pm) and every second week thereafter.

MSD Pharma Company To Build New €140 Million Tipperary Facility.

Pharmaceutical company MSD Ireland, which is part of the US giant Merck, is planning to build a new €140 million manufacturing facility, [3,266sqm in size and 20.75m high] alongside their successful existing plant in Ballydine, Co. Tipperary.

Planning documents are understood to have been submitted to Tipperary County Council with the proposed scheme, same expected to create some 300 construction jobs over the life of the construction period, understood to take 18 months.

MSD, which employs some 2,700 people in the Irish Republic, said the proposed facility was needed to address a manufacturing need to produce small volume, highly effective drugs, to meet increasing product demands. An example of these types of medicines are those used for chemotherapy products.

The Ballydine site first opened in 1976 and currently employs some 500 highly skilled individuals. The site has API and Formulation facilities for the manufacture of commercial products and the development of new products.
They invested €75 million between 2014 and 2017, furthering their commitment to the manufacturing site with 20 of MSD’s pipeline products undertaken at this state-of-the-art research and commercialisation facility; exporting products to approximately 25 countries around the world for further processing.
