Local Deputy Noel Coonan with President Michael D. Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin
Noel Coonan TD has welcomed the allocation of 80 additional Tús (Irish Translation – Beginning.) places for County Tipperary as part of the first tranche of extra placements on the community work placement initiative. Both North Tipperary LEADER Partnership and South Tipperary Dev. Co. Ltd have been given 40 additional places.
“This is welcomes news for people who have been on the live register for over 12 months in Tipperary and who are in receipt of a Job-seeker’s payment from the Department of Social Protection. Work placements are provided by community, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations and the local development company matches the skill set of participants to available placements,” said Deputy Coonan.
The Minister for Social Protection today (6th February 2013,) announced details of the first tranche of an additional 1,100 places on Tús. This announcement will bring to just over 6,000 the total number of placements available on Tús. The additional allocations form part of the roll-out of 2,500 new placements announced as part of the Budget 2013 measures to underpin the Government’s efforts to support those who are long term unemployed.
Deputy Coonan explained: “Only last month the Minister announced an additional 2,500 places for the Community Employment programme bringing the total places available on that programme to 25,300. The additional allocations were determined following consultation with each of the 50 local development companies delivering Tús and taking into account the demand for placements locally,” concluded the local Fine Gael TD.

Tipperary schools are being invited to participate in the first stage of the Nationwide 2013 Irish League of Credit Unions’ School Quiz competition, run by Thurles Credit Union in the Premier Hall, Rossa Street, Thurles on Friday 1st February 2013, at 7.30pm.
Over 25,000 schoolchildren under the age of 13 will again compete in over 300 venues throughout the 32 counties. The questions, compiled by primary school teachers, will cover such general topics as geography, history, music, literature and sport.
This is the 22nd successive year that the Schools Quiz has been organised by the Irish League of Credit Unions. It consists of two ‘knock-out,’ stages, which will culminate in a National Final in Dublin in early April, when 100 qualifying teams will compete.
In addition to certificates and prizes to the winning team members, the winning schools will also receive a welcome cash prize.
In 2012, Scoil Ailbhe, Thurles successfully retained their titles in both sections (U11 and U13) in the first round of the National Credit Union Quiz and no doubt will be back again to defend their titles in 2013.

In a statement today, the Tipperary Peace Convention stated that in choosing this years winner it was forced to recognised the courage, impact, determination and perseverance, this young 15 year old student has had on so many people across the world, making her a symbol of resistance against the Taliban’s efforts to deprive girls of an education in her country.
Despite her youth, Miss Yousafzai has continuously campaigned for the rights of girls to receive an education and came to public attention back in 2009 by writing an on-line diary, which spoke about life under Taliban militants, who had taken control of the Swat Valley, committing crimes & banning student rights to education. She received death threats over the content of her diary, but in 2012 stated it was well worth the risk.
However, last October, she was shot in the head by a member of the Pakistani Taliban, as a bus she and her fellow students were travelling on, came under fire in the city of Mingora. The reason given by the Taliban for her attempted assassination was that she was “a western-minded girl.”
Announcing the award today the Tipperary Peace Convention have stated; “Malala’s courage has proved to be an inspiration around the globe. The right to education is denied to 61 million children of primary school age around the world and the hopes of these children are represented by the courage, determination and by the voice of Malala Yousafzai. The Taliban tried and failed to silence her and have instead amplified her voice to the world.”
Last month Miss Yousafzai, who is currently recuperating at a Birmingham hospital, was named “Teenager of the Year,” by The Times.
