 DEIS Exclusion Five primary schools from Tipperary town, represented by some 100 school pupils, teachers, and their parents, travelled to Dublin city yesterday, to protest at their exclusion from the DEIS scheme (Delivering Equality of opportunity In Schools), latter which allocates additional resources to disadvantaged schools.
Each of the five primary schools protesting all believe they meet the necessary criteria for full inclusion in this scheme.
In February last an extra 79 schools were granted DEIS status, however Tipperary schools were not included in the final shake up. They together with some 90 other schools, have now formally queried this allocation process to the Department of Education.
The school principals state that while the Department of Education officials informed them that their particular establishments appear to meet DEIS criteria, they will not currently be included in the scheme. This is received by those protesting as a gross injustice being handed out to Tipperary town pupils.
During their protest the five schools delivered a letter of protest for the Minister for Education and Skills, Mr Richard Bruton, which fully outlined their trepidations.
The countdown to Ireland’s biggest ever 2017 International Girl Guide Camp has officially begun, following the launch last year of ‘IGGNITE’ at ‘CONNECT’ held in Rockwell College, New Inn, Cashel, Co. Tipperary, on August 21st 2016 last.
The IGGNITE event will be taking place in Rockwell College again this year, from July 30th, 2017 to August 6th. 2017.
Irish Girl Guides are now looking forward to welcoming some eighteen hundred other Girl Guides, aged between 10 years and 16 years old, from many different countries around the world. Indeed visitors, all who will be camping out, are expected from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Canada, the US, Georgia and Zambia, as well as areas closer to home, e.g. England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Thurles Order of Malta Ambulance Corps have announced dates for public training courses at their training centre situated at Bohernavroon, Thurles, for 2017.
Basic First Aid and Emergency Skills; a five-night course, will begin on Tuesday’s from the 25th April at 7.00pm, with another five-night course scheduled from the 19th September, and with the option to add-on Paediatric / Child First Skills, for a following two nights, to these courses.
Public courses are available for anyone who has an interest in learning life-saving skills or require refreshing their skills or recertification after two years.
Thurles Order of Malta, a registered charity, is officially licensed and regulated by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) of Ireland, the national regulator for ambulance operation and training services. They are the only PHECC Recognised Institution provider in the Thurles area. All instructors are licensed practitioners, fully-qualified and have the experience that comes with years of front-line first-aid service.
Major changes have come into effect this year for first aid at work. Occupational First Aid has now been replaced by a new national standard First Aid Responder (FAR) course and accredited by PHECC. Approved by the Health and Safety Authority for the workplace, and the Department of Children for childminders, it is available on three Saturdays from the 13th May at 9.00am, and later from the 21st October.
Thurles now has a growing number of private and public-access Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s). The PHECC national standard training course for operating defibrillators, Cardiac First Responder (CFR), a one-night course, will be available on the Wednesdays of the 26th April, 24th May, or 30th August at 7.00pm or Saturday 10th June at 9.00pm.
All courses are officially certified and materials are supplied. In addition to these public dates, we provide private courses by appointment for clubs, groups and employers at the Thurles Order of Malta centre or your workplace, tailored to accommodate your specific needs where at all possible.
Tipp Mid West Radio’s Tom Hurley Reports On ‘The Cashel Pioneer.’
In 1900, an Irishman named Paddy McCarthy arrived in Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina. After initially working in the port, he obtained a position as a physical education teacher in a school, but also boxed and became involved in football as a player, coach and referee.
 In fact, he competed in what’s considered the country’s first ever professional boxing match and his name is also associated with the foundation of Boca Juniors football club, with some even crediting him for assigning them their trademark blue and gold jerseys, which they still wear today.
Later through his work with the Sports Municipal Committee of Buenos Aires, Paddy McCarthy did much to promote sport especially among the young but is purported to have gone to his grave in 1963 at the age of 92, having revealed little about himself or indeed his time in Ireland. Interestingly however, it is written that he was born on the 17th of March 1871 in Cashel, Co. Tipperary and attended the Christian Brothers School. It has also been suggested that he had the Premier County’s GAA colours very much in mind, when selecting a kit for Boca Juniors.
McCarthy’s fascinating story will now be the subject of a 4-part documentary to be aired on Tipp Mid West Radio, which uncovers more about his time in Argentina and investigates his links to the historic town of Cashel.
It emerges that from around 1850 until the end of the century, Argentina had been a popular destination for Irish emigrants especially from the Midlands, with numerous people from Cashel continuing to make the voyage well into the 1920’s. As a consequence, hurling was one of the sports introduced from abroad, which became increasingly popular.
The documentary has uncovered a lot of new information on Paddy McCarthy and the high regard in which he was held in his adopted homeland. For example, he had the distinction of refereeing the first ever Superclásico, latter the name given to the football derby played between Boca Juniors and River Plate. Boxers he regarded as friends included Babe Herman and Gene Tunney, whilst he is also photographed with the president of Argentina, the Duke of Kent and the Prince of Wales when they visited Buenos Aires in 1931. He was also the recipient of a gift from Theodore Roosevelt.
Interviewees for the programme include Cashel residents Albert Carrie, Seamus King, John O’Connor and Tom Wood. Noel Blanchfield from Ballyneale who resides in Yonkers, New York outlines how he became intrigued by McCarthy’s story, having first come across his name in the United States. Among the other contributors is academic and historian Edmundo Murray from Buenos Aires, who has conducted the most extensive research on McCarthy to date.
The revealing 4-part documentary entitled ‘The Cashel Pioneer’ by Tom Hurley will be aired over four Wednesdays at 11.05am on Tipp Mid West Radio, beginning on April 19th next. The programmes can be heard outside the county on www.tippmidwestradio.com.
Congratulations to Thurles Order of Malta Cadet Corps who had a very successful last weekend in Killarney; attending at the South-West Regional Cadet Competitions.

Thurles Cadets were placed in the following categories:- Footdrill first place, Senior Home Nursing Team second place, Senior Two-Person First Aid Team first place, Junior Individual First Aid second place, Junior Cadet of the Year first place, Junior Home Nursing Team first place, Junior First Aid Team second place.
‘Officer In Charge’ Catherine O’Loughlin stated; “We are very proud of our Cadets and their continued success representing us. We are grateful to their Cadet Leaders in particular, and all those who helped in their training, including other Seniors and Cadets, and their parents for transporting them”.
Some Cadets will now go forward to the National Competitions in UL in July next.
