One of the oldest living All-Ireland Tipperary hurling medallists passes away.
It was with great sadness we learned of the death today, Monday 1st January 2018, of Mr Michael (Mick) Murphy, late of Ballygall, Co. Dublin and formerly Kilmaley, Co. Clare and Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
Born in 1918; one of the oldest living All-Ireland hurling medallists and pre-deceased by his loving wife Norah; Mr Murphy passed away peacefully today in his 100th year, while in the loving care of his family and the staff of Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, Co. Dublin.
Having taken up an employment post in Russell’s Drapery Store, in Thurles, in February 1940, Mr Murphy joined Thurles Sarsfields and played as a right wing-back and at midfield for the Tipperary and Clare senior hurling teams. He won an all-Ireland Hurling medal in 1945 with Co. Tipperary and was later inducted into Thurles Sarsfields’ Hall of Fame.
Born in Kilmaley, County Clare, Mr Murphy first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-five, when he first joined with the Tipperary senior team in the 1943 championship. He became a regular member of the team over the next few years and won one All-Ireland medal and one Munster medal. He was a four-time championship medallist playing with Thurles Sarsfields and also played for a host of other clubs including Kilmaley, Clarecastle (Late 30’s) and Faughs. Having also lined out with Co. Clare, his retirement came following the conclusion of the 1949 championships.
A special word of thanks is requested for the staff of the Mater Hospital, Beaumont Hospital, Ambulance Emergency Services and Beechtree Nursing Home, Oldtown, for their excellent care of Mr Murphy.
