Good News For Irish Pensioners – Christmas Bonus And New Pension Increases Explained

Important information for older people and social welfare recipients following Budget 2027.

Many pensioners are wondering how much extra money they will receive this Christmas and what their pension will increase to in the New Year. Hereunder is a simple explanation.

Christmas Bonus – December 2026
The Government has confirmed that approximately 1.4 million eligible social welfare recipients will receive a Christmas Bonus.
Payments are due from Monday, December 7th 2026. The bonus is 100% of your normal qualifying weekly payment.
This means that most eligible pensioners will receive the equivalent of an extra week’s pension.
There is no need to apply. It will be paid automatically if you qualify.
Example: If your qualifying weekly pension is €299.30, your Christmas Bonus will be €299.30 extra.
The bonus is a once-off payment, not a permanent pension increase.

State Pension Increase – January 2027
The Government has announced a €10 weekly increase in the maximum State Pension rates.
State Pension (Contributory): Aged 66 –79: €299.30 increasing to €309.30 per week.
Aged 80 and over: €309.30 increasing to €319.30 per week.

State Pension (Non-Contributory):
Aged 66–79: €288 increasing to €298 per week.
Aged 80 and over: €298 increasing to €308 per week.
These are maximum rates. Some people receive reduced pensions depending on their PRSI contributions or financial circumstances.
For someone receiving the full €10 weekly increase, this means €520 extra over a full year.

Extra Help for Pensioners Living Alone
The Living Alone Increase will go up by €3 per week.
It will rise from €22 to €25 per week in January 2027 for those who qualify.

Fuel Allowance Increase

Fuel Allowance will increase from €38 to €43 per week from January 2027.
This is an extra €5 per week for eligible households during the Fuel Allowance season.
Not every pensioner qualifies. Income and other conditions apply.

Who Qualifies for the Christmas Bonus?
The qualifying payments include:
State Pension (Contributory and Non-Contributory)
Disability Allowance
Invalidity Pension
Carer’s Allowance
Certain long-term Jobseeker’s Allowance payments
One-Parent Family Payment
Widow’s, Widower’s and qualifying Bereaved Partner’s Pensions
Domiciliary Care Allowance
Some payments have a minimum qualifying duration, normally 12 months.

Important: A double Christmas payment usually means your normal weekly payment plus an extra bonus payment. It does not mean two separate Christmas Bonuses for everyone, suggested in some press releases.
Some people who receive two qualifying social welfare payments may be entitled to a Christmas Bonus on each, depending on the rules.

A Reminder to All Pensioners
The Christmas Bonus is due in December 2026, but the new €10 weekly State Pension increase will not begin until January 2027.

Please share this information with elderly neighbours, family members and friends who may not have access to the internet. Every pensioner deserves to know what they may be entitled to.
