Killer Covid-19 Cases Today Reach 14,729 On Irish Mainland – Up 279 On Yesterday.

The Department of Health here in the Irish Republic, has confirmed 6,597 additional PCR-confirmed cases of Covid-19, as well as 4,564 positive antigen tests, registered through the HSE portal; thus confirming in all a total of 11,161 new virus cases, within our Republic in the past 24 hours, an increase of 590 new cases on yesterday.

As of 8:00am today, 892 Covid-19 patients were in our Republic’s hospitals, down 4 on yesterday, with 88 of these in intensive care units also down 2 on yesterday’s reported figures.

The National Public Health Emergency Team in the Irish Republic yesterday gave the green light to the ending of most Covid-19 public health restrictions, with the proviso that only mask wearing, Covid passes for international travel and isolation when symptomatic, remain in place.

As I write, the Republic’s Cabinet is considering proposals for bars and restaurants, to possibly allow for a resumption of normal trading hours, beginning from tomorrow. Physical distancing could also end from tomorrow, with a return to the office on a phased basis beginning on Monday. Restrictions on indoor and outdoor events, are also expected to be removed from tomorrow.

An extension of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment for a short period, is also likely beyond February 7th, when it was due to drop back to €207.00

Northern Ireland’s Department of Health have confirmed a further 3,568 coronavirus cases today, down from 3,879 cases reported yesterday.

There are 398 patients with Covid-19 in hospitals in Northern Ireland, down from 402 yesterday, with 24 patients with Covid-19 remaining in their hospital intensive care units.

Sadly, also Northern Ireland’s Department of Health has reported 6 Covid-19-related deaths today, bringing their total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 3,062.
